T'ai Chi - THE Party

Y'all know what it's like at a competition, especially during the final match up to determine who goes the the podium.  Every eye is on the surfers... a hush in the air... totally absorbed in the tension of the moment.

Well, er, maybe not all the time.....

The T'ai Chi competition had a party atmosphere that started with a Friday night pre-Open competition party with DJ Tanya Palianta on Chi's Girls on Film Dance Club.

The party continued the following Saturday shamelessly encouraged by Dj Danu Grayson despite her being attacked by a deadly swarm of African Headless Tsu-Tsu Gnats.  The Pro party culminated with a circle jer… spectators dancing in a circle instigated by the perpetual party instigator, MaryAnn Maa.  There were surprise visits from the likes of Pricilla - Queen of the Dessert,  Colly the Parrot accompanied by a flock of birds who talked like surfers, a scourge of scorpions, and who could forget, Collzilla.

Team Profile: Vibrations

submitted by Kantbe Thursday

Time to blow the dust off your old Beach Boy LPs, 45's, and MP3's to get in the right mood for the team profile for SLSA competition surfing team, Vibrations.

To force VW into taking the time to fill out this profile, Lissa withheld from VW only what Lissa can…  his beer and pizza.

Please enjoy this 2nd in the Surfwatch series of SLSA competition team profiles:

-----------------------------------------------------

Team Name:  Vibrations

Year Founded:  2007

Founder(s): VW Sands

Owner/Captain:  Buffy Munroe

Co-Captains:  Quench Spotter

Mentors:

Current Team Standing:  Ummm.....

Where did the team name come from:
Vibrations was born from our group "The Vibrations Surf Alliance"

Why was this team started:
I started the team as a way for our somewhat more "serious" *cough* riders to compete together at the SLSA comps but more importantly to have fun collectively.

Pertinent history/team highlights:
Hmmmm....Oh! We did manage to scrape out a championship once!

How does this team train and how often:
Train? You mean like practice and stuff? We.......surf alot and drink beer and eat pizza. Does that count?

What is the basic philosophy behind this team in terms of SL surfing (reality vs. gaming):
Our philosophy has everything to do about having fun. I personally like big, wide, sweeping bottom turns and quick cut-backs and off the lip moves (reality) but......it´s just a game ;-)

What board does this team use and why?
Our "Team" boards are SJA customs but most of us surf on whatever we have most fun riding.

What wave does this team prefer and why?
Ask each of us and get a different answer each time.

What associations does this team compete in?
We have competed in most all of the different series at one time or another.

Who are the top scoring riders on this team?
Hmmm, never really thought about THAT! Wicky and CK, Dix, Kimmy and Frank. I spose we all have good days now and again ;-)

SLSA June 1st Director Elections

Elections for new directors of the Second Life Surfing Association (SLSA) will be held on June 1st. Out-going directors are Sally LaSalle, Giavannamarie Melody and Maldrul Morris.

Three candidates have expressed their interest in running for a seat on the board of directors: Bobbi Laval,  Giavannamarie Melody, and Melian Catronis. Below are their applications submitted for consideration (taken from the SLSA forum):

SLSA Directors & Members,

My name is Bobbi Laval. This notecard represents my intent to stand as an SLSA director in the June 1st election. I am willing and able to serve the full term. I am currently co-captain of Reef Riders. I have served one term before as a Director.

I have surfed and finished in the top 10 of every SLSA season, and during the course of those 10 seasons I haved enjoyed teaching and introducing new people to the fun of surfing in SL. I consider myself a surfing mentor and hope to continue in that role. I am a trained Head Judge and have judged in 14 competitions. I have surfed on SSi boards in the SLSA but also on HP boards in the ABSSL and enjoy trying out and testing new surfing equipment and approaches. My vision for the SLSA is to bring in new members and build a new core generation of surfers that can experience just some of the joy that surfing has brought to me.

Yours sincerely,
Bobbi Laval

PS .. While I am willing and able to serve, should 3 other younger members decide to nominate before the deadline for the closure of candidates ... then please disregard my nomination as I would very much love to see new people with new ideas taking the SLSA in new and excitng directions.

--------------------------------------------------------

SLSA Directors,

My name is GiavannaMarie Melody. This notecard represents my request to stand as a director in the upcoming election. I am willing and able to serve the full term. I am currently co captain of Reef Riders. I also own my own clothing line Surfari, which is a sponsor of SLSA. I have served multiple terms as a Director.

I have worked on many SLSA projects. My attitude and work ethic is my greatest assett to the organization. I have been a part of the organization for over 2 1/2 years now, been a SLSA director 4 times and bring a lot of experience to the directorship. My vision for the SLSA is to help it grow as well as continuing to find a way to save our great surfing sims. Over the past tenure on the board, we had great difficulty in finding volunteers for our great events. This is something I wish to continue to focus on should I be re elected.

Thankyou,
~Gia~

---------------------------------------------------------

My name Melian Catronis and I wish to run for a Director's position with the SLSA. I have the desire and intention to stand for the full 6 month term, if possible.

Team affiliation: Tai Chi Zen.

About me: I have been surfing in SL for a year, though I am not a RL surfer. I find the surfing community for the most part to the core of what SL is supposed to be about--creativity and support, and (with a few exceptions) acceptance of the differences of everyone. I can't promise that I know what I'm doing, but right now I think there's a perception that a crisis is brewing in the surfing community over recent events, and if there is some way somebody new can come in and reassure the masses if that's not true, I'd like to be a part of that.

Thank you.

Team Profile: Surfcrazy

Submitted by Kantbe Thursday
Following up with the informal survey of individuals who have been competing in SLSA competitions as team members, SurfWatch has resurrected and is updating the Team Profiles that were originally done in 2009.

Although it is rumored that Mick Lunasea can surf everything from the log of a freshly cut endangered Loulu tree to the back doors of his 1941 custom surfer Ford Woody Wagon, SurfWatch does not promote nor endorse any of the teams represented.

-------------------------------------

Team Name:  Surfcrazy

Year Founded:  2010

Founder(s):

Owner/Captain:  Mick Lunasea

Co-Captains:  Zadi (Imzadi Amaterasu), Jayden (Jayden Domenici)

Mentors: Robin Mapp, Yendor Destiny, Aeryn Kidd

Current Team Standing:  6th

Where did the team name come from:

Surf-Crazy was a 50's surf film by Bruce Brown. Mick named his website combining the words http://surfcrazy.com . In sl Mick started Surfcrazy Surf Shop in 2007.

Why was this team started:

In 2007, Mick knew no one except Rob Jon riders until he met Sierra and Thor. Misfit's Shop was largest at Surf City. and carried SSI. Mick quizzed Thor and Sierra about Surf Contests. Surf City had no team, Thor passed away or Mick would have surely been a Misfit. 2008 Mick was a rookie, red, first heat at Monkey Paw riding a misfit board created by Sierra. It was an early sculpted shape. Mick had no team affiliation although the board sported a Surfcrazy Logo.

2009 Rob John (Robin Mapp) sponsored Team Surf City riding RJ surfboards. The SLSA permitted a one time longboard contest riding RJ Noserider, Connie, Brigit, Rockytheskaterboy and Mick were team riders. Rob created a line of SSI boards, The team was renamed Da Hui. Team riders were Sean, Aeryn, Monq Rob, Connie, Yendor and Mick. In 2010 Yendor was season champ, shortly thereafter Da hui became inactive.

Surfcrazy Surf bums / Team Surfcrazy was launched. Keeping with Rob John and RL tradition Surfcrazy sponsored Team Riders. Original  Team Riders were Connie, Yendor, Rockytheskaterboy and Mick. Ceedi, Crystal, Jay, Revlon and Xander joined, Abel and Jordan also joined the team briefly.

Current Team Riders:

Mick Lunasea- Main Contact-Pro Surfer - Team Captain
Imzadi Amaterasu - Pro Surfer - Team CO-Captain
Jayden Domenici -Pro Surfer-Team CO- Captain

Aeryn Kidd - Pro Surfer
Anabelle Marquis - Pro Surfer
Countess Decosta - Pro Surfer
Cristal Rowlands - Pro-Surfer
Curshaw Resident - Pro Surfer
Maha Adder - Pro Surfer
JT Castenea - Pro Surfer
Rockytheskaterboy Dreadlow - Pro Surfer
Shilow Carter - Pro Surfer
Xander Datura - Pro Surfer
Yari Ziplon - Pro Surfer
Yendor Destiny - Pro Surfer
Violetrain82 Resident - Pro Surfer
Destiny Delacroix - Pro Surfer

Pertinent history/team highlights:

Team Surfcrazy's best finish as a team was 2nd in 2011. The highlight is having met and surfed with so many great  riders over the years. Lots of laughs, good times. Mick is proud that new and old riders choose to represent Surfcrazy Surf Shop.

How does this team train and how often:

Team Surfcrazy tries to ride together as often as possible plus test experimental surfboards.

What is the basic philosophy behind this team in terms of SL surfing (reality vs. gaming):

Team Surfcrazy approaches Sl surfing using old school and gaming technique. Using all SL has to offer surfing waves far and beyond whats possible in RL is a BLAST!

What board does this team use and why?

Team riders are free to use any surfboard although Mick will supply boards or help pay for Mods. Many riders prefer Mods due to deck customization and experimental aspects.

What wave does this team prefer and why?

Team Surfcrazy prefers ALL waves that can be surfed on :)

What associations does this team compete in?

Team Surfcrazy Riders compete in SLSA, VSA, ASA and Independent  Contests.

Who are the top scoring riders on this team?

Top Riders this season are Zadi, Crystal and Violet. Curshaw is awesome, hardly ever even visits the comp site before contests. He just shows up and goes for it!

Stories from The Lost Coast Tonight and Friday!

submitted by Kantbe Thursday

Some of you may remember the storytellers at the West of Ireland Library and Cultural Center.  As with traveling bards, the storytellers continued to spread their tales across Second Life and are now resident storytellers on Imagination Island at the Seanchai Library (Shanna-key, which means "Storyteller" in Irish) that borders the Imagination Island surfing area known as The Narrows.

Of special interest to the surfing community is a series of surf related stories being told by Shandon Loring, including his series of Stories from The Lost Coast.  As Shandon puts it, "The beach is a no-man's-land, the coastal zone a dynamic give and take of land and sea, swell and tide."  His series is described as, "tales of truth, fiction, and fantasy - each a glimpse into life on this sweet and ragged edge of beauty."

This week, on Thursday the 17th at 7PM SLT, Shandon will be continuing his telling of his Lost Coast series.

As a special introduction to the Seanchai Library's "Welcome Summer Weekend", at 7PM SLT on Friday the 18th, Shandon will be telling "Tahiti Iti - a surf story" and a couple other tales.

All stories are told in voice.  Seanchai Library's home is provided by the Community Virtual Library (CVL) Estate.  There is no charge for admission, but any donations to help support CVL would be appreciated.

The Community Virtual Library is a virtual resource center that exists in Second Life. Community Virtual Library is made up of Info Island, Imagination Island and Cybrary City II and provides free library resources and services to the residents of Second Life, as well as providing a network for real world resource specialists to explore new ways of serving the public. http://www.infoisland.org/home

SLSA Team Member Informal Survey - Part 8

Submitted by Kantbe Thursday

Prompted by some of the questions about teams being asked by people who are new to surfing in Second Life® and the SL Surfing Association (SLSA), Surfwatch recently conducted an informal survey of surfers who are currently registered as team members for teams who have had competitors in the SLSA competitions over the past year. While individuals will not be identified by response, the nature of some responses may be a bit individually unique and suggest who provided that response. For the most part, any edits to responses were kept to a minimum in order to provide anonymity to all. (Editor's note: This is the last part of a continuing series as SurfWatch posts the survey questions and responses.)

SW: Please make any other comments you would like regarding competition teams in the SLSA

It's plain fun to have a team to surf with.

I hope teams never go away!

I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the competition in Montego's rear view mirror.

I understand that we are, on the RL side of the screen, social animals. We like to be part of groups, compete as groups, an so on. But surfing is not a team sport. It's you, a wave, and what you got. Cheering for your teammates does not make a team sport, it makes a support network at best and forced fandom at worst. But I also understand why they exist. We're social animals, we like to compete as teams.

I was adamant on not changing my mind about using different boards in competitions.. but when I tried other boards I thought it was interesting trying something from a different perspective. SSI board will always be my number one board to use.. but I think trying something new would bring a different spark to competing and would be good to get out of that comfort zone.

What I love most is the spirit of surfing in the SLSA,we can be very competitive against other teams, but always there's courtesy, mateship and respect for all members, that's what keeps me coming back

Teams are healthy vibrant...Dat shit cray

It is easy to congratulate a person when they win, but my team is there when I fall off the wave, and they pick me back up, dust off my behind and throw me back on my board. That is a team.

SW: Thanks to all of you who responded.  Surfwatch intends to follow up this article with a resurrection of the Team Profiles in order to provide more specific information regarding the current teams registered with the SLSA. Stay tuned for more to come!

Blue Moon Creates Excitement

Submitted by Marianna Monentes

I am sitting here envisioning the best Pandoran RP Region ever created. Already I have meter MSCBvh V1.0 created by Lucinda Bulloch, it is incredible. The Amp Suit created by Sullivan Infinity, is on its way...but there is something missing...you.

This is an open call to anyone interested in creating with me and my husband RW, the best Pandoran RP Region, ever created. Having been owner of nAvitar in Second Life, I have dealt directly with all aspects of RP SIMs.

For me, the most important aspect of RP is realism, if its not realistic won't be a part of this project, sure Avatar the movie is fiction, the point I am making is, if it wasn't in the movie, won't be here. My goal is to find everything we can to make this project as realistic as we can.

That, brings me back to you. Whats needed are all the military items, envision if you will everything in a military base, bunks will be needed as well as exercise machines. There will be need for monitors and radar screens. Gun Towers, Jeeps the list goes on. Then we have medical. From forceps to yes wheelchairs, and everything in between. RDA even needs "link beds" as well as customized nanotech receiver/transmitter nodes.

The na'vi have many needs too. The native tribes use bows, arrows and knives to take on the guns, flame-throwers and missiles of the invading humans. Ikrans, Woodsprites, Tree of Souls, Hometree. Just to name a few.

As a creator projects are what make my virtual life so incredibly rich. Creation is such a positive life. To leave someplace better than you found it. If you are like me, a person who loves to create, this is a groundfloor opportunity to be part of the Best Ever Pandoran RP Region, we call Blue Moon.

There are four sims here so far. Blue Moon, Pandoran Plains, Aurora Forest, and Banshee Mountains. As you see in the picture the Hallelujah Mountains are established, created by Webby Merlin.

Please come join us, bring your creations. The owners Tiffany Magic and Logger Sewell, have an incredible incentive for you. If you bring your shop, depending on space needs you are offered a shop or SIM, free until traffic generates income for tier. All uploads are free.

Tsunami Beach Reborn!

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, or a beloved sim emerging from the black sands…. Tsunami lives again!  We reported back in February that Tsunami Beach had reverted to its landlords and many of us were heartbroken. This weekend I got an invite to come check the place out,  I first went to the sim thinking that it was just a "tribute" to Tsunami and recreated. But then I looked at my map and realized, "OMG I am actually on Tsunami Beach!"

I wandered the sim. There are so many cool little touches. A little hut with a sign that said, "Colleen's Corner", a Man Cave… hmmm… wonder if I can peek inside.  There is a dance floor, a few shops (already with tenants) and some beach houses.  Dolphins have already taken up residence and can be seen splashing away.

This crazy ass bird became my best friend, lol.

I caught up with the owners Pova Rustamova and MaryAnn Maa and pestered them with questions.

Cierra: What inspired you to bring back Tsunami Beach?

MaryAnn: I remember day the sim was lost, I  tp'd here and saw not a drop of water but land surrounded by mountains, I felt sick seeing that. This sim holds a lot of wonderful  memories for Pova and I  and probably every surfer in SL.

When it became available, again,  I knew  Pova and I had to have it,

It was a no brainer to us. We wanted to give it back's it's life.  I hope Colleen (Brennen) would love what we have done, I think she would be proud of us...

Pova: One night Maa was out and about and saw the Tsunami was up for sale and she got all excited couldn't wait for me to log.  She immediately cornered  me and asked if we could buy it.  She was all sentimental about it and since we were bouncing around from parcel to parcel trying to find a place we wanted to live it made good sense,  let alone good Karma, lol.
So we jumped in head first.

Cierra: Why do it? I mean why "Tsunami"? Why not just a new surf sim?

Pova: There were several thing actually.  First off, Tsunami Beach History, it has been around for so long and I have spent hours there surfing and talking and building relationships within the surf community and when it went away it was a big loss to me personally.  Maa has expressed the same to me in the past.  One of those relationships was Colleen Brennan, more or less, the heart of Tsunami Beach.  You have no idea how may hours we spent just talking Waves, Surfing, Board Performance, Trick Techniques and even personal stuff.   Then on top of that I'm a member of the Tsunami Surf Team and there is some Legacy there with all the surfers and finally it just seemed like the right thing to do.

MatyAnn: We know Tsunami Beach was missed, we missed it.  It's historical.
Black sand beaches,  years of comp's here, lot's of fun parties, my first dance with Pova was actually on the old boardwalk by the pier.  We wanted to  make it  less commercial and more native as they say... A happy peaceful place to surf, be lazy  and enjoy life here

Cierra: There are a lot of different niches on the sim. What is the story behind them?

Pova: Well, Tsunami Beach re-incarnated, since it couldn't be put back to the original as it was with FreePort attached, has been built more from sentiment from several parts of my life in SL and Maa's life in SL, while trying to preserve the spirit of Tsunami Beach.  The team clubhouse is a given, its Tsunami Beach.  The Club House build is one I made for my old Paradise Dream Sims and I really like it. Its a great place to hang with a great view. Colleen's Corner is heart of the sim of course.  The dance floor was a Maa creation to prod my DJ Career and give us a place to party.  The Man Cave is just that.  All men, lol, and the occasional woman as us men are nothing with out our women.  The shops are to help preserve the sim along with the rentals.  The rentals, however, are more geared to give the die hard Tsunami Beachians a place to live and be a part of Tsunami again.  Lastly there is the Light House.  That is the first item I ever put on a sim.  If you look at my profile, that light house is the one I'm standing next to some 5 or 6 years ago, plus its a great few and a nice place to neck, Check it out.

MaryAnn: The club house is 3 floors, 1st floor Pova's surfboard shop.  2nd floor  is  Tsunami Surf Team Clubhouse, with darts, pool table and a snazzy Hula Girl Bartender ... 3rd floor  is a wonderful spot to view the sim.

Now Colleen's Corner is a funny story, When Pova was editing land, there was a "hill" that would not flatten, Pova investigated and found it was still in Colleen's name... this little tiny square, survived 2 owners.... We joked it was where the bodies were hidden.  Pova joined it to the rest of the land and we put the little hut there, with 2 picture viewer's, one for Colleen and one for Kim with a rocking chair. Bandit has been  on duty guarding it.

The dance floor is a, humm, a cove surrounded by rocks,  you'll just have to come and see.... Now, Pova's Man Cave, started at our home, we decided to move it to Tsunami cause well Men need a cave ;-))

We have 4 shops, small little huts, 2 are rented 2 are available.
Bullet ( fuzzybutt ) has his wonderful art, and Lou Nizna his sexy swimsuits and t-shirts. There is an info hut in the middle.

We also have a light house, at the top is a Paradise Blanket, everyone is welcome to use it.. Now the  living arrangement here, we have a small island in the NW corner that is rented.  Four huts and 1 house. Each is a separate parcel and comes with it's own radio and TV... all are rented .
But you can ask if we have someplace to put you .. giggles

Cierra: What type of waves do you plan to use?

MaryAnn:   That is HOF Surf Pro 2008, Pova Rustamova's department.
There are boards you can rez by the landing area.

Pova: Whatever inspires me on the day, lol.  At the moment I have some old school waves in my inventory, such as epics, pipes and fluffies.  The fluffies are a big lag generator on the sim so their use may be limited, but I love fluffies.  I also, currently have some of the newer waves that include the Teaphoo and some 60M Sunsets and I'm looking to purchase some others if I can make some deals, lol.

Cierra: Anything else you want to add....

MaryAnn;  I have considered getting back in the wedding business, considering it on a small scale.
We purchased land on Freeport so we will have a place that holds people when we start having comps.

And a Grand Opening is in the  planning stage. we will  announce that as soon  as possible...
Pova and I  hope you all like  our vision of the sim, how it has turned out.

Also  a new group, * TSUNAMI BEACH *, please join  us so you don't miss out on news and fun times...

Pova: People this gift of love is here for you to use.  So come enjoy!!!!!!!

MaryAnn: (The) Grand Opening is May 8th, Tuesday from 6 to 9pm SLT.

Cierra: I will be there! I am sure it is going to be a great party. Tsunami Beach and Colleen meant a great deal to me. So thank you for doing this!

BTW - I have already moved in :)
