The Sun Sets on Neart

As many of you have heard or discovered by now, West of Ireland turned back one of our oldest public surfing sims to Linden Labs. This was due to the new policy where Linden discontinued land cost discounts to charity and educational customers.
Neart is now gone. A number of you dropped by during it's last few days to help collect some surfing video there. Thanks to all of you who came by and I'm sorry I wasn't able to include some of you who would have liked to been a part of this.
I'd also like to thank SL live musicians Zorch Boomhauer, POL Arida, and Lefty Unplugged for allowing me use their music for the making of this video.
Mari's Mailbag: Display Names

Okay, I have to admit when the discussion of Display Names came about I was first to say that I felt it a bad idea. To think there would be people with my name ...like the griefers wreaking havoc and me being blamed. They can pay my tier but cannot cause probs. So now, I am happy to say the Display Name idea is really cool especially learning who everyone is again. Then if you
have lots of alts do you then give them Display Names too? Of course you do.
Lately, I see my friends logging on and it is making me laugh so hard. Some of the names they have. What will Lindens come up with next?? They have given us free homes, names even the game is free until you learn your play money isn't play but its to late because you are already addicted to all the niceties of Second Life (SL). Each and every day I log on I find something new and exciting in this phenomenal virtual world. Tomorrow there will be yet another feature. Touch would be nice...smiles. A good hug.
Next time you think its your last day in Second Life (SL) try to remember your first. Remember? It was like a shiney new car with a full tank and new tires. Lets refill our tanks...recap or retread our tires ...put down our suntops...and keep cruising. Just think ...new waves on the horizon...like the endless summer. There are so many cool things about Second Life (SL). When those days of bad times pop up...just grab your board ...become one again with the wave until it passes.

Mari's Mailbag: Kait Scores High
I just love getting the IM from surfers saying, "Mari, I made finals!!" Thats what just happened recently with the funniest gal I know, Kait Seetan. She surfed in the Tsunami PCX Tandem Challenge VIII with Robbin Ember and they received a 13.16 score !!!
When I first met Kait, she was still learning trix of SL and I
wanted to teach her surfing. She learned quickly and in no time at all was forced into competing...lol yes, forced. She didn't want to. I kept telling her what did she have to lose? She explained her RL was too busy to compete. So one day she comes to me and says "Mari, I have more time, I think I will compete!" She has been since and doing exceptionally well.
So we are here to say compete if you can. It's such a rush. The friends you meet are usually the forever kind in surfing. Dedication and lots of practice will pay off too. Teach all you know to everyone you can and one day you will be hearing they made finals...
Surfing with Lissa
On the road again, just can't wait to get on the road again...er, Hi again! I'm off searching for a sweet spot to surf once again. Join me and lets surf!
I heard the waves are sweet at Pirate Point Break so I headed over there where the epic waves are truly running! After taking in a few runs, I found some nice quiet spots to sit and rest and did some shopping while there as well. A girl can never have too many boards or kinis!
Next stop is Peach Pie Resort on Wolf! Dual unsynced pipes run on this sim making for a challenge if you wanna ride them both. I chose to sit this one out and watch VW Sands and Abel Halderman show me how pipes are done.
Just in time to catch the sunset, I find Kilkee in the County Clare of Ireland. Fluffies roll into shore in shark infested waters. I don't have my wet suit so pulling up some sand, I sit back and enjoy the sunset. http://slurl.com/secondlife/GREATER%20IRELAND%20Clare/90/167/21

Linden Lab Announces 42 Groups In Effect Now!
Linden Labs has officially announced the ability to have up to 42 groups now. Please check out http://blogs.secondlife.com/community/technology/blog/2011/01/13/technology-improvements-for-q1-including-raising-group-limit-to-42#cf for more info. Third-Party Viewers may also have this ability so check with them!
I'm off to load up on all my surf groups that I have had to keep declining in order to keep some others that are needed. Whoo hoo!

About Suzen JueL aka JueL Resistance
Juel Resistance is a well known musician and song writer in Second Life. She is a self taught musician who has been performing since the age of 13 Suzen “JueL” Resistance’s creative roots are deeply entrenched in a family of french musicians, artists and writers. As one of the first indie musicians to join and perform in Second Life, she has built a strong presence in the virtual world. Not only is JueL a talented musician, she is also a very talented artist, Her paintings, drawings, and Photography are being featured on the second floor of Laval Gallery.
About Bobbi Laval
Bobbi first became known as a competitive Second Life surfer and simboarder. With a background in education with just a little experience working in graphic design she never really considered herself artistic. Her artistic talents were discovered from entries in Second Life photography contests. Art sim owner Zeno Ochs took Bobbi under his wing and encouraged her to develop her talents. Surfing with Lissa
After deciding that taking a break from reading about thermadynamics would keep my remaining two braincells alive, I decided this surfer girl needed some sun! I dug my kini out of the drawer, grabbed my board, and loaded up the woody. Where to go?
First stop: Topanga http://slurl.com/secondlife/Topanga/118/215/21 where the waves are a bit mushy for my taste
but if you like fluffies this is the place to be. Fluffies and I haven't gotten along in the almost 4 yrs I have been inworld so moving on.
Next stop: Visiwa http://slurl.com/secondlife/Joyful%20Land%203/42/224/21 where the beach is gorgeous! No waves to surf but I did make a new friend and found out the lifeguards do not have a sense of humor when you tell them someone is drowning and then take their seat! Great view tho!
Ok, one more stop on my search for the perfect set of waves today! Where to next?
Found it! Flowers surrounding a quaint fire where I can sit and dry off before heading home. Phoenix Sanctuary is located at http://slurl.com/secondlife/FurNation%20Rockhopper/143/207/22 The wave is running and it is calling my name...til later, surf!
Virtual World Hopping: Explore a New Nation
Avination, another in a long line of virtual worlds springing up, currently has just under 3,000 users and 310 sims. The creators explain Avination has enhanced content protection for creators, is easy to use with fully managed sims, low lag, and carries your favorite brands, "Experience a grid that doesn't compromise on content, with unmatched script performance and compatibility, improved physics and motion and many under the hood improvements that really serve to make the Avination experience different." Currently there are no waves and no surfing, but you will find neighborhoods, shopping, town squares, role play, combat systems and live music. We'll keep you posted as more creators check out this virtual grid and waves and surfing start making a splash!
If you're a creator, there is a method to transfer items you have full permissions on or own the rights to into Avination. Currently, you can transfer linden into C$ (Care Coins), the currency in Avination, at several transfer points in Second Life (SL), altho be aware, it is not a like value. There is also a "cash out" option so you can easily cash out your Care Coins to Paypal.

Mari's Mailbag: New Perspective
I am so excited this year!! Told myself..."Self, you have wanted to learn so many things, this year thats what yer doin." So I took two days and studied GIMP and clothesmaking and have to tell you I did it!! What inundated me before was the massive tutorial articles to pour through to find the easiest most concise one.
Its all about tools in life. Knowing which ones and how to use them. So for me I searched for the tutorial that helped me to ready my toolbox. Also knowing the resources and where to go. For me, having the tools and resources saved me tons of time. In the past I used to research everything but now with less time I rely on others to do that for me.
So, think about what it is you want to learn here in Second Life (SL) There are so many awesome things you can be doing when your surfing is at a lull. Take a break and learn something new. It will make you feel great about yourself and give you a whole new persepective that just may help you to become an even better surfer!!

Tsunami PCX Tandem Challenge VIII
When: Sunday, January 16, 2010, 12 noon SLT
Where: Tsunami Beach
Waves: Sunset 100
Registration: send a NC to Colleen Brennan and Abel Halderman. The NC should include:
- your full name,
- full name of your partner,
- what board are you going to surf (longboard or shortboard).
Example: "I, Abel Halderman, would like to surf in the Tsunami PCX Tandem Challenge VIII. My partner on the wave will be Colleen Brennan. I will be surfing on a shortboard".
Registration deadline: midnight SLT, Friday, January 14th.
Boards: one surfer surfs a longboard, the other a shortboard. Boards used in the competition will be rezzed on the beach. They will be the only boards allowed in the competition - same boards for all shortboarders, and same for all longboarders.
The Tsunami PCX Tandem competitions format:
Two surfers simultaneously enter a wave from opposite ends. They surf as a team. Each rider is scored for their individual performance by their own judge; another judge or judges score team performance.
Each team surfs 3 waves in a heat.

A party to send Neart out with a bang was held Friday at 5pm SLT. So many people turned up that the party was moved to the neighboring sim, County Cork.

The turn-out was not surprising considering how Neart is deeply embedded in surf history. Bobbi Laval organized the party, which also held a mini competition. The last competition to be surfed at Neart. Conall McGinnis of the West of Ireland Estates DJ'd the event, and did a damn fine job.
West of Ireland is a series of sims that, as the name somewhat implies, are inspired by Ireland. All proceeds from the sims' events benefit the War Child charity, and there are several donation bins available on a daily basis. It is due to the changing of how Linden Labs is charging charities for sims that led to the closing of Neart as reported by Kantbe Thursday previously on SurfWatch (See: Time to Say Goodbye to Another Old Friend)
The mini competition held was judged by Jordan Mendle and Wilfrid DeCuir. Harbor Piers took the final crown at Neart. Check out the rest of the results below:

Mari's Mailbag: It's Our SecondLife

Cruising around Second Life (SL) lately, I just cannot help but notice more failed TP's, lagging, Marketplace has slow deliveries, too. As technology progresses, seems things would become better. We all know about the massive layoff: "We've emerged from a two-year investment period during which, among other things, we've spent a considerable amount of time improving reliability and the overall user experience," said CEO Mark Kingdon, who took over from founder Philip Rosedale when he stepped down two years ago. Okay this was back in June 2010. Sooooo, what's going on guys? More people in SL is likely the cause, too.
Okay, so we need to regroup. Find better ways of doing things. Lower the ARC perhaps, even when we aren't surfing. Now you will see me bald because someone told me taking off your hair helps when TP's are failing. Guess what? It works. Would appreciate comments here as to ways to improve our Second Lives. We may be bald when we TP now, but hey, look on the bright side. We are here in SL and have many great friends from around the world. Even if we were left to just chatting, I would enjoy the many friends I have met. Until that time, let's think of the ways we can perhaps "better" our Second Lives.

Closing Party for Neart
Friday January 7th
5 -7 pm SL Time
Neart the Celtic word for Strength and Force.
Neart has been a West of Ireland surf sim and home beach of Reef Riders since 2007. But unfortunately due to changes in Linden Labs pricing policy Neart is closing.
Come surf, party and remember one of our old favorite surf sims.
DJ Conall will be spinning tunes.
Mini Comp at 6pm SL Time
Mini Comp will be open to first 10 people that show up at the closing party between 5 and 6 pm and IM or tell Bobbi Laval they wish to compete.
Party will be at County Cork adjacent to Neart to keep the surfing as lag free as possible.

Kantbe Serious: Wedding Belts?

Oh, not belts, bells!!!! Can you hear wedding bells over the sound of the surf? Looks like we'll have another wedding within our surfer community. Lynda Mimulus has finally been captured (or at least her heart has).
Damien Kleinfeld trapped Lynda on a deck in the middle of a cove and popped the question yesterday (January 4th, 2011). In what can only be explained as a moment of weakness or temporary insanity, Lynda accepted.
Being the shy, reserved person she is, it may be difficult to get Lynda to show you her engagement ring. Who am I kidding?!? Just look at that rock!
Lynda rushed to show Colleen Brennan. Ever alert, Colls had to be hit over the head with Lynda's arm to spot all the bling'n ice. Always quick on the uptake, Colls responded with, "What? What… what'd I do?" as the happy couple fainted when she finally noticed. (we luvs ya, Colls).
Let's all wish the happy surfing couple congratulations and our best wishes.

Time to Say Goodbye to Another Old Friend

"We are sad to announce that due to Linden Lab price increases for charities we have to close Neart forever this Saturday the 8th.
We are working on moving the epic wave to Bundy and we will be keeping Bundy open so there will still be surfing in the West of Ireland. Crab will also remain open. We will be moving most of the other items from Neart to other parts of the West of Ireland.
But Neart will be gone after Saturday, so please come on by and say goodbye to our old friend before she's gone forever."
West of Ireland has been working for the past few months with Linden Labs to keep as much open as possible, but their charity status is a double edged sword in that their priority for income is providing funds to War Child North America. By discontinuing their educational and charity sim tier discounts, Linden Labs has left West of Ireland no options for maintaining the sims of their estates as they have in the past.
Please come by Neart in this last week, surf one of the few remaining classic Epics, and say your good byes. If you've never been there before, nows your chance to get in a last few rides in the cold Irish waters.

Mari's Mailbag: New Year = New You

New Year means new you? Some of us stress at the beginning of a new year. All the expectations and changes that a new year brings. Sometimes we enter a new year with many changes. Friends leave or living arrangements change. Instead of dreading, look at it as a challenge, an adventure. Like taking the next wave when the marshall says,"Blue take the next wave." You head towards that wave with every bit of finesse that you possess. Lag? Plow through it, with one goal in mind, reaching and conquering that next wave. Same holds true for the New Year. Think of it as a time to right your wrongs, mend broken relationships or move on and leave the negative in the past, forgotten. Please don't drag last year's problems into your new year. It will drain you of the positive energies you need to create a great year ahead.
Drag out all those ideas you once thought of. See if any are appropriate now. Sometimes I have ideas 10 years old that are perfect now but at the time seemed far fetched. It's time to search your mind and choose what you will be this year. For all our sakes, please make it the best you have ever been. (Smiles) Joke: we love ya just fine, but please try (wink).
