Bobbi Laval's Abstract Art Show Grand Re-Opening

Vertex Art Gallery Grand Re-Opening
Thursday March 31st, 2011
7:00pm SL Time

Vertex Gallery is a well known and established gallery that has been the centerpiece of Zeno Och's Gemini Elysia art sim. Vertex Gallery is now under new ownership and managment with a new focus on abstract art. Join us for our grand reopening celebration featuring the art of Antenna Rae, Mik Frequency, Fiona Leitner, and Bobbi Laval. Music to be provided by DJ Keol.

Bobbi began creating as an SL photographer. She was recognized for having an "eye" for compositon and color. Soon she began manipulating photos in an artistic way. She has become known for her photography. Never being satisfied she began creating original digital paintings. Ever exploring color and light, each series of work tends to be unlike any series of work she has ever done. Some of her work is a blend between SL and RL.

All along she has created abstract art, often expressing emotions and feelings difficult to put into words. Her collection of abstract work for the Grand Re-Opening of Vertex Gallery is a mix of photo manipulations, original digital paintings, and manipulated Aphphysis creations.

Updated Wave Report

submitted by Kantbe Thursday

Check out the new version of the SurfWatch Wave Report. With all the different and changing types of waves out there, the public surfing sim list has been rearranged into groupings of Large, Medium, and Small waves. As with before, several sims run multiple wave types, and several change the waves they run from time to time.

If you see any that are patently wron...wro...wr... inadvertently misidentified, please let Kantbe Thursday or one of the other SurfWatch staff know. If you know of any sims that have been closed, or new public sims that are available, please let us know as well so we can get the list updated.

Kantbe Serious: FrankenBreak

submitted by Kantbe Thursday

Ever wonder how much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood? Yeah, me neither. Ever wonder how many waves you could load up on a Homestead sim and still have a crazy fun surfing experience? Yeah, me neither. But I've found one!

Our Rock N' Roll ukulele surfer, Nash Laville and Luscious Starship have put together a surf'n spot that had, at the time of this writing, 12, count 'em, 12 waves of various types running. They've got one wave after another rezzing with about a minute between each wave generation. You don't have to spend much time at a buoy waiting on a wave for sure!

I thought that surely this would be a killer to sim performance, so I asked Luscious Starship about it. She promptly replied, "Don't call me Shirley!" She went on to say that the sim stats have looked pretty solid with FPS staying mostly around 44.5 and almost never dipping below 42, with Time Dilation staying around .995 with dips down to around .96 when the wave first rezzes. Nash, of course, has had to be careful about running scripts and prims, but the atmosphere of the surrounding beach hasn't suffered. Nash has had to give up wearing a prim or two… mostly his hula skirt, I think. One of the biggest problems with running this many waves Luscious said is Inventory management…. boy can I relate!

VW Sands and Lissa Pinion dropped by to take a look. I don't have permission to quote VW, so I can't tell you that he said things like, "Its......farkin off the charts", or came up with the name FrankenBreak.

When I was there, some of the waves running were a Maverick, a Sunset, the Cortes X2, the LDS waves named after surfers such as Kimmy Jigsaw fluffs, Colleen, Nash, Mick, along with the Phatty (Starship Giant), Crying Tiger, and Shipstern's Bluff. The Nash has to run last in the series because, as Luscious put it, "the Nash clobbers everything. If there's a wave in the way, the Nash takes it out."

There was some discussion of a new namesake wave, who's name would be taken in vain will remain anonymous (can you have an anonymous namesake wave?). If it does ever sees the light of day, it might be called the Smart-As*. When it rezzes, it would rise up, turn around, moon the beach, and then drop back into the sea. Shall we take a poll for who's wave that would be?

Many hours were spent setting up and testing various configurations. Many surfers suffered - boards had to be retired. But the end result seems to be worth it.

If you've not been there yet, pop over to Zug and check it out. It's a hoot!

Mari's Mailbag:Good Sportsmanship 101

submitted by Marianna Montentes *reprint from May 3, 2010*

Good Sportmanship is key in any endeavor but especially when you represent a body of Officials that govern a certain sport. Everyone is asking...where did things go wrong? Why the negative mood. The Drama. Think about it. Its Sportsmanship the key to getting along with others. How you recieve others...how you converse...mingle...all goes to the core of the individual. The attitude in which they preceive things..how they project their actions is all sportsmanship. We have to be good sports in life. Take things in stride...shake it off...laugh ...accept apologies and not hold grudges. I had a team mate quit because an official yelled at him for riding a certain board made by a maker that was at issue years ago with the owner of the sim where he was surfing. I found this appalling. This happened years ago and still bringing up past issues and not even the owner of that sim. Just surfing same time as my team member and saw him on that board and reprimanded him. GET a life people please.

Lets remember to be good sports. Carry good vibes. Thank people. Congratulate people. Respect people. Offer help. This may be Second Life but morales should be the same as in Real Life. This isn't a place to pretend to be RUDE. YOU just ARE. If you are rude here then I think you are in Real Life too. Again I cannot stress it enough BE A GOOD SPORT.

Pacific Crisis Fundraiser!

Courtesy of Sanura Snowpaw:

An emergency fundraising effort for the victims of the crisis in the Pacific that hit on March 10th and 11th is being set up. SL is an international community, with a strong base in Japan specifically. This disaster is worldwide and affects us all, as a community SL has risen up time and time again to help out in times of distress, including very recently.

In September 2010, 11,000 US dollars was raised for the Pakistan flood crisis relief fund (UNICEF) at an sl event. An event organised in four days. This is an example of what our community can do, and we are attempting to prepare for a similar, simple but effective, event.

We are calling for anyone who wishes to help with this fundraiser. We will be providing vendors that donate 100% of sales to a charity account (Charity Shelter) for people to place in their stores and at an event location. http://slurl.com/secondlife/World%20of%20Beauty/231/142/1002 The products in these vendors don't have to be new, but the more new and exclusive items available the more money we will raise, so even a variation of an existing product is appreciated. We welcome any and all participation and interest in this event - if you'd like to participate as a designer please go to - http://www.tinyurl.com/pacificfund

We require all brands involved to have one product sold at 100% to the charity, however if more than one item is available the others can be at 100% or 50%. Please note that 100% of all money raised will go to the charity Americares (http://www.americares.org/). Land was donated by Glam Affair and all volunteers are giving their time without charge.

Surfing on Snow and Ice: Winter Sol

pics by Sunshine Zhangsun

SurfWatch recently sat down with Jac Mornington and Sunshine Zhangsun and talked about their Winter Sol creation and the Season Opener for the SecondLife Surfing Association

SurfWatch: Surf sims are predominantly tropical in nature. What inspired you to create an arctic surf retreat?

It all began with the change to our full sim. We had both always lived in a tropical area and had been utilizing Sunshine's amazing Patch Thibaud compound since we created Sol. Heck, Sunshine had been using the home for over two years! We were both ready for significant change and decided we wanted a seasonal mountain environment. The full sim was recreated first with the mountain range, the home site, the forest, the meadows and the iced over ponds and lakes. The surf sim re-design came soon after and here, we went full arctic - a seal colony lining the shore; ice forming as the waves hit the shore; orcas breaching, just hoping for one of the many seals to come into the water; narwhals rising up to the surface; polar bears stranded on the icebergs; floating ice and the HP Joaquina wave crashing into the icy shore. Neither of us had seen this done in SL and decided it was time for something new and different.

SurfWatch: How long will it be available?

We re-designed Sol back in November and this unique surf experience has been available since late November 2010. As the Northern Hemisphere Winter in RL fades, so will the Winter SOLstice and Arctic Sol environments... so expect the thaw to begin in late March 2011.

SurfWatch: What kind of activities and features do you have available?

Of course, we have surfing on the Arctic Sol sim to the West...it is the primary attraction. On the full sim, we have sledding, ice skating, ice fishing and just plain, exploring. We have many animals in meadows, in the rocky hills, and in the woods. If you visit, be sure to have your sounds turned on as we also feature natural sounds of the environment as well... the seals, the orcas, the wolves, the wind...

SurfWatch: What is your favorite feature?

We enjoy the whole environment, both sims - the snow falling, the water rushing under the ice, the seals yelping, the whales breaching and the view. The surfing in this environment has provided some of the best rides that we have experienced in SL, too. The lag has been minimal even when we have full weather systems going...it is always a good day for surfing at Arctic Sol.

SurfWatch: The SLSA 2011 Season 1 surf comp is taking place here, what kind of challenges does this create compared to other surf competitions held in the past?

The Sculpty Creations Arctic Challenge kicked off the SLSA 2011 Season 1 comp series with a huge success. When we were asked to submit the sim as a competition site, we let the SLSA Directors know that we would make only minimal changes to the sim. Our sim was selected and we did exactly that... only thing we removed was the weather system. The sim performance for both weekends held up better than any surf competition that I can remember and provided excellent conditions all day for both. Every surfer and staff that participated commented on the positive experience here at Sol for this competition. And the best part? We did not perform any restarts for days before the actual comps, so no risk of getting a bad server on a restart on Comp Days! And keep in mind, the sim has been on SL Showcase/Destination Guide since early January and our visitor count stays on the high side...and still, no need for a restart!

SurfWatch: What would you like people to know about the sim?

Jac and I have always provided nature oriented, realistic environments for everyone to enjoy. We would encourage others to follow our lead and step out of the box now and then...not all surf environments in the real world are tropical, not all are even sandy, and not all are in warm environments. Do what you enjoy most, experiment and make it the best you can within the virtual world we share. Visit our Winter SOLstice sims and surf in a low lag, optimum surf environment...and enjoy the cold, exhilarating experience that only be found for a few more weeks on Arctic Sol...but be sure to wear your warmest surf gear!

And be sure to keep your eyes open and ears to the ground...we are in the midst of researching our next surf environment...!

Be sure to check out these great vids shot by Sunshine on their sims and get there before Spring melts it all away!

Kantbe an SLSA Date Night

submitted by Kantbe Thursday

Y'all, I thought I'd share a little about my date from the SLSA Valentine's Date Auction FUNd raiser for the SLSA's home sim, Archipelago. I had the honor of being taken on a date by Team Vibrations pro surfer, FrankiePalmero Actor.

Frankie was in the mood for some posh dancing, so we went to Bogart's Jazz Club. They say they're exclusive, but they let me in anyway. I guess it was because I was with Frankie.

We had a great time. I know we all just hop on dance balls and dance, but I swear, Frankie was a much better dancer than most of the other guys there. I think we were the only guests there who were actually in sync most of the time.

The time just flew by with us chatting and dancing. OK, I'll admit it.. I was doing most of the chatting. If you find that Frankie isn't responding when you talk to him, he might still have that cotton in his ears. I choose to believe him when he said it was the music was too loud and not from all of my talking.

I'd sure be interested in hearing about other auction dates (private IM or notecard for those that didn't stay PG, please). What kinds of things did y'all do? Enquiring minds just want to know!
