SurfWatch 2 Year Anniversary Second Life Photo Contest Winners!

Bobbi Laval and her guest judges did an amazing job of organizing the SurfWatch 2 Year Anniversary Celebration Second Life (SL) Photo Art Contest, and SurfWatch is proud to honor the top 3 winners of that event:

1st Place:  Sol's Morning, by Sunshine Zhangsun

Judges Coments about Sol's Morning:

I chose Sol's as first place because you can actually feel the temperature; the head-on shot of him coming out of the wave, going low and his expression (anxious); the balance from the bottom to the top. The avoiding of cliches like shooting the tube, riding the curl, the arms out and legs bent -- avoided all that stuff. You can feel the motion too, so Sol takes it hands down.

My favorite picture is the one of the guy paddling out, Sol's Morning. I like how this picture conveys the creativity of the photographer without a lot of flash. I'm a firm believer in the KISS (keep it simple, stupid.. LOL) principle. The use of windlight is wonderful, and the mood of the photograph is very relaxing. You can feel the subject's connection with nature.

I liked Sol's, very nice play with color and lite. Unusual for a surf pic in that the subject is paddling and not surfing, but the power of the water was captured so well.

2nd Place:  Fun Times on the Water, by WickedV Carver

Judges Comments about "Fun Times on the Water" :

I thought the stylized rendering of fun times was brave, and the emotions were plain to see. The angle of the two were terrific, and I like the man about ready to wipe out, too high in the curl. The colors were pretty wild too.

I so much like the colors and playfullness of the picture. Very creative use of windlight, stylized almost just like a poster.

3rd Place:  Sunset at Cornish, by Maxwell Silvansky

Comments about "Sunset at Cornish" :

A lovely sunset with waves rolling in and palms. I love a good landscape photo and this one has all of the visual elements. The windlight and solar reflections are wonderful. The use of the rule of thirds is spot on in this picture. I feel tranquil just looking at it.

Sunset was a cliches for sure with it's use of the light and sun on the water, but it was so well done, and the colors caught were just too good to ignore

It was simple, well "framed" conveyed the mood perfectly and left the surfers out; focusing on more of the end of a beautiful day surfing rather than the surfing itself.

People's Choice Award:  Sol's Morning by Sunshine Zhangsun
Honorable Mention:  Reaching for the Stars by Coolkat Delicioso
Honorable Mention:  Always the Sun by Crystalship Rehula
Honorable Mention:  Aqualle Lane by Aqualle Lane

Best Card Trick Ever!

This guy has allegedly been seen hanging around Monkey Cove...

Surferdude and the Ducks

The 2-panel epic rolls into the bay at Stables (88, 181, 22).

One panel continues on further thru the bay following along the horse trail, while the other tempts the daring surfer to test the fates and the possibilities of a duck pond landing.

Carefully calculating the trajectory, Oldsurferdude Danitz begins mentally plotting the airborne path.

In a dazzling leap of faith from crest to cloud, Surferdude
grips his toes into his board.

And scores a perfect landing into the duck pond!  Come test your duck daring at Stables!

Syx Toshi - High Performance New Surfboard

reprinted by permission of  Syx Toshi

Just yesterday, Leogarto Burt came to visit me at Monkey Cove.  While working on a wave, he broke out his new HP5 Surfboard. Right away I noticed how cool looking this board is. It has a great thick feel, too, without a bulky feel and shape that looks fast just sitting there in the water.

The performance of this board is in a word Awesome! The feel and ability to make razor sharp cutbacks is amazing. As far as animation goes, he’s nailed it! The animation changes when cutting back into and up the waves with your avatar maintaining balance just like you would in Real Life (RL) surfing.

Although the board has some modifications to be completed, I really enjoyed the experience.  It’s definitely a really fun ride. I didn’t have an opportunity to explore the features of the board, but there are a few key elements I noticed within seconds.

First, there's is virtually no belly time.  While interacting with the wave, you spring to your feet almost immediately. The second observation is that the board has better control then the HP4 boards. Some new riders have had expressed difficulty in the “touchy” nature of the HP4.  I can assure you, there is a great balance between the old and new here.  New and experienced surfers alike will love this board.

The HP5 board will be tested at the next Associacao Brasileira de Surf no SL event and then go on sale later in April.

Mari's Mailbag - Competition

Should you compete? I would say positively compete! You have to at least try it. It was the greatest experience. I met lots of great people, and the venues were all challenging. Had I never competed, I would not have known how to surf the fluffies. The Chi Fluffy Challenge forced me to learn how to surf fluffies and happy to say I did quite well having never surfed them before. Was so challenging. Competing can either be done on a team or independently, depending on your preference. For me, the team was great.  They help to keep you motivated and practice together. Its also lots of fun waiting for your heat when you have team members you can cheer for and vice-versa. I have friends who surf independently, and they love it, too. Try one and if you don't like it, try the other, but do try. The experience will stay with you and so will all the lasting friendships you make.

Promising Surfer Series - rain Tigerfish

by SurfWatch roaming reporter, Marianna Monentes

As Second Life (SL) surfing begins it's 2010 surfing season, SurfWatch is dedicated to bringing to you those surfers that stand out from the pack in the Promising Surfers series. This edition, we're proud to present: rain Tigerfish.

SurfWatch:  Surfing rather elegantly to 3rd place at the January 30, 2010, Australian Surfing Association (ASA) competition at Monkey Cove, rain only started competing in November of 2009.  Tell us, how does it feels to have won?

rain Tigerfish: Great!

SW:  When did you begin surfing?
RT:  In Second Life (SL), in January '09, in Real Life (RL), in 1996.

SW:  What comps have you competed in?
RT:  Both ASA comps, the Pacific Coast Extreme (PCX) Tandem Challenge, the Mori Pwani Pro, the Montego Longboard Epic Pro and Montego Epic invitational. Started them November '09.

SW:  What is the best surfing tip you have gotten?
RT:  Take my huds off.

SW:  Who gave you the best surfing advice?
RT:  Rayzza Rubble.

SW:  What is your favorite aspect of SL surfing?
RT:  The waves are nice and consistent, no muckin around waiting for the tide to rise and also having fun with friends.

SW:  Do you surf RL?
RT :  Yes.  I learned to surf in a local surf school on a long board that was origianally owned by a guy twice my weight, so way too heavy for me, struggled to carry the log. Then bought a mini mal.  Next came a 7 ft mutant which I used in local surfclub comps, the best l did was second place there. Then the girls were unhappy about my bigger board (then theirs), so l tried surfing a 6.6 on my favourite reef break, hahaha. Didnt catch one wave....its a reef break, nice and gentle, just how l like it. so after surfing on Ray Gleaves 'Mc Tavish' in a longboard clinic l went along to, only to meet the legends...l was sold. Now love stylin on my light weight 9 foot GTS that tucks just under my arm and turns real swift, ...on the reefbreaks, of course (smiles).

SW:  What prompted you to try SL surfing ?
RT:  I have lived in Monkey Cove since I entered SL. Its part of life there, and its very nice to have somewhere to go when RL surf is flat.

SW:  Whats your favorite beach?
RT:  The beach in front of our ASA clubhouse ( Monkey Cove).

SW:  Whats your favorite board?
RT:  An SSi longboard that Rayzza shaped for me.

SW:  What advice would you give to a beginning surfer?
RT:  Have a go and have some fun, dont be shy, ask questions and learn. Oh, and don't buy that el cheapo, they won't copy, and you'll end up losing it between the sims or in the rocks.
