The Search for the Perfect Ride

submitted by Harbor Piers, Special Correspondent

As you feel the gentle cool brush against your face bringing the hint of salt taste and hear the crunch of the wave in the distance, you know that it's time wax up your favorite board and paddle out. Not so fast! There are dangers lurking and creativeness being lost if you don’t know where those waves are breaking or how strong those winds are! Before you jump on that board, take a few minutes to see what you are about to get into. Ask yourself one question. How can I satisfy this thirst I have for the perfect ride?

“The perfect ride” may be many components put together into one, but all rides must start with an understanding of the wave set-up. Stand at the beach, set your draw high, and let the wind breeze through your hair. I recommend doing this while sitting on your board, but before you paddle out. Look into the distance to see how the waves are rolling in. Are they seamless? Is there a gap? Are there multiple wave types?

A good example would be a set-up that includes sets of pipes and fluffies. It would be a good idea to count the waves rolling in to see if you notice any patterns. For instance, are the fluffies rezzing for every pipe set? Are the pipes always at the same angle? Some set-ups will take more time to understand than others, but the benefit and mindset of knowing what’s coming will help you get the best from your ride. Things to look for include the length of the wave, the lip of the wave, the wave generation (frequency and location), and any potential transitions. Knowledge of these concepts will allow you to use the wave to your desire, along with having an idea of some of the technical details like timing and transition angles. Also, it may help to try to feel what kind of lag you may have to fight through. As you are sitting on your board, try rocking gently to your left and right to feel the response of your keystrokes. Getting a good feel of how your board is responding in the sim conditions will allow you to better judge yourself while surfing.

Studying the waves is a key component to getting a really good ride. If nothing else, the knowledge you obtain will give you a respect, or “awe of nature” for the waves of Second Life. After you feel like you have studied the wave enough to shred it, go ahead. SURF!!! Whether it be dawn, day, sunsets, or night, continue to search for that perfect ride.

SurfWatch is proud to welcome Harbor Piers, owner and Captain of Team Boracay, as our newest special correspondent.

West of Ireland Surfboard Design Contest Winner

submitted by Marianna Monentes

West of Ireland's (WOI) Surfboard Design competition announced the winner of their event, JamesB Allen.  SurfWatch caught up with JamesB shortly after the announcement of his winning design.

SurfWatch:  How does it feel to have won the WOI Surfboard Art Contest?
JamesB Allen:  It's always nice to win but in this case, I would have prefered a judges panel instead of a popular vote.  But I am happy about winning, and I plan to auction off the prize surfboard and donate the auction money to Project Children.

SW:  How did you determine the idea for your board?
JA:  The bottom of the board incorporates a child's face (for Project Children) and the colors of the Irish Flag. The deck is red and is intended to represent the struggle and plight of these children who really are innocent victims.

SW:  Your design is awesome.  Can you tell us how you created it?
JA:  You mean you want me to give away trade secrets (laughs). I use Adobe Photoshop.  I think alot of people who design in Second Life (SL) are familiar with Photoshop. I used layers of colors and paint brush smears and, of course, a template for the surfboard which helps guide me so that the patterns fall into place when you bring your art back to SL from Photoshop.

SW:  Do you have any comment about having to remove the Project Children piece from the design (editors note:  see WOI Announces Charity Change posted 3/24/10)?
JA:  I was surprised and disappointed because I told many of my voters about Project Children, and I had planned to do the auction.  So I'm just a little dissapointed that things are in limbo now

SW:  What will become of the board now other than the beach at Bundoran?
JA:  I believe it will be used for their loaner boards at Bundoran Reef.

SW: What was it like for you during the contest?
JA:  This was the first time I have entered a contest like this. This was more about how many people you can beg to come vote for your board. And I really was against doing that at first. I really told myself I was just going to let the people judge the art. But a few days after the boards were set up for voting, I went to see how it was going, and I was a little shocked and upset to see 4 of the 5 boards with fewer then 3 votes.  And one board with, like, 30 votes. I was like, what the (*&&^  is going on here! It became quite obvious that this was not an art competition

SW:  When was your most anxious moment?
JA:  Kantbe (Thursday) did a great job and the 5 final boards selected were all very nice designs. But some days, SL is laggy and the sim was a little sluggish at times. Anxious moments -- I guess the day before the talley. I had about 5 people there trying to vote and the voting script wasn't accepting votes. I ended up contacting Kantbe and sending her photos and names of those who could not vote. I know SL has issues, and I felt bad about having to contact Kantbe about the script not accepting votes. SL gets laggy and sometimes things don't work the way we expect them to work. Kantbe ended up gathering up the votes and resetting the script so that all 5 boards showed 1 vote. Anyway, it was just a little SL glitch.  Those things happen.

SW:  What suggestions, if any, do you have for future contests?
JA:  For a contest like this, I think a panel of judges is more than enough. I know a panel selected the final 5 designs and that was good. Also, maybe having the artists explain what their work means. Sometimes art can be misinterpreted or its meaning is missed.

SW:  Do are your future plans for your art?
JA:  I am part owner of Sands of Time Dance Club, Venetian Beach, so I spend most of my SL time working on small projects there. That keeps me very busy. I would love to do some custom boards for people if they don't mind waiting, I don't always have time to do SL stuff.

SW:  We would like to thank you for this interview, JamesB.
JA:  No, (laughs), thank you.  I know you guys work hard, and I totally appreciate your hard work. SL is so time consuming and we all have Real Life (RL) to deal with, so thanks you guys for all the work you do!

Mari's Mailbag - Surfing in Lag

When you begin surfing its easy to find one venue you love and surf that one lots. You should surf all venues to get a feel of all the different conditions. Waves, beaches, and lag are all different. It helps you condition for when you start competing as they use most venues for competitions.

If you avoid the ones with lag, you will have to learn to surf in the lag when events happen. At competitions there will be lag. Yes there are some things you can do to overcome lag. Here is a list. Again, I picked this up and the author isn't listed. Credit is due.

1. Detach all items that use scripts (AO's, jewellry with bling, wings, etc.). Spectators can do this too to help.
2. Change your group title to none.
3. Change your preferences (you may not need to do all of these, just the ones you can live with):
     a. General tab
          i. Change 'Show Names' to 'Never' (you can turn this back on when you finish surfing)
ii. Select 'Hide My Name On My Screen'
iii. Select 'Hide My Group Title'
     b. Network tab
          i. Set your Disk Cache Size (MB) to less than 500 MB.
ii. Click 'Clear Cache' and relog.
     c. Graphics Detail tab
          i. Deselect 'Enable Bumpmapping and Shiny'
          ii. Deselect 'Enable Ripple Water'
iii. Select 'Normal' for 'Avatar Rendering'
iv. Select 'Sun and moon only'
          v. Select 'Low' for 'Terrain Detail'
vi. Move the slide bar for 'Object Mesh', 'Flexible Mesh', 'Tree Mesh', and 'Avatar Mesh' to the far left.
     d. Adv. Graphics tab
          i. Deselect 'Anisotropic Filtering (slower when enabled)'
ii. Turn down the 'Max Particles' value
     e. Audio & Video tab (I don't recommend doing this)
          i. Move all the slide bars to the far left. Remember to move these back after you surf.

Beach Bunny

submitted by Geof Romano

What is the BUNNY SHACK you may ask?  Well, it is NOT a night club, its not a dance club, its not a venue.  It's a simple variant of a store.  It's a space that basicially defies definition.

For those that aren't familiar with the BUNNY SHACK it is the hangout for the Waven Cajun Surf & Beachwear Shop Second Life (SL) group, and it serves as BEACH BUNNY Magazine headquarters.  There you can pick up the latest issue of BEACH BUNNY Magazine - Celebrating the SL beach life, and you can subscribe to it as well at the Subscribe-O-Matic in the center of the shack. Also, on the second floor of the shack, you can find works by the famous Real Life (RL) artist *XABRINA* on display.

And as if that is not enough, you can possibly meet the March BUNNY SHACK PRINCESS OF THE MONTH, none other thin the lovely Miss Fox Sugarplum. You'll be able to pick up a poster of the BUNNY SHACK PRINCESSES while you are there, and pick up a nomination form for the April BUNNY SHACK PRINCESS.  So come on down and enjoy the view of the reef at Bundy and have some fun! (West of Ireland, 34, 230, 24)

West of Ireland Announces Charity Change

Known in Second Life (SL) for its longstanding support of Project Children, West of Ireland (WOI) representative, Sioban McMahon, today announced changes that WOI will be making to its charitiable sponsorship. "Saturday night, after the surfing comp, I received an email from the president of the South Texas Celtic Music Association (STCMA). He had heard from the Texas chapter of Project Children. I don't have all the details, but the Texas chapter is changing direction in their fundraising. They want to move away from having music events such as the STCMA's annual festival or our work in SL as Project Children fundraising events. I'm not certain what their new approach will be. The end result, however, is that we are still a 501c3 nonprofit with the mission to promote Irish and Celtic culture. We are in the process of finding a new charity with whom to link. The charity needs to have 501c3 status, must be well respected, and fits in with our general theme (related to Irish children or other Irish charity, or an international children's charity). It will take us a couple weeks, at least, to get the new relationship set up. We'll hold events as scheduled but we won't be asking for donations."

She added, "We ask our friends to be patient with us. We're here to stay, but are in a time of change."  McMahon promises any monies raised to date in support of Project Children will be forwarded to that charity.  Any performers booked for the next few weeks have agreed to continue to support WOI and perform as scheduled while WOI determines their next charitable focus, and McMahon adds,  "All of us at WOI are grateful to them."

Stay tuned to SurfWatch for more information regarding this important WOI charitiable change.

"Ever since my twelfth, I've been looking forward to my sweet sixteen."

submitted by Ashleigh Dickins

The quote in the title is from one of the best movies of all time, and definitely one of the most quotable.

After attending Lacy Rossini's fantastic Sweet Sixteen surprise party on Maa on March 19, I have the urge to indulge my inner dork and settle in to watch Sixteen Candles, the movie that quote was from. In it, the family forgets Samantha's (Molly Ringwald) birthday.

Luckily for Lacy, she did not suffer the same fate.

This party was certainly sweet and fit for a princess.

With a Renaissance theme, the grounds were decorated with a gorgeous castle custom made for the birthday girl by Fibber Shin, and surrounded by gardens.

Fancily dressed party attendees entered under an arch and into the castle where they were graciously greeted as Lords and Ladies.

The lovely birthday girl enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends and dancing to music from DJ's Lynda Mimulus & Desirae Beaumont.

There was also a large tiered birthday cake with candles to be blown out. The birthday girl's parents, Wilfrid Decuir and Kimmy Jigsaw were there, of course, as well as brother MarkFoo Waverider.

Among the surprises was also a beautiful dress custom made by Velvetori Twine of Velvet Rhythms. The party was organized by MaryAnn Maa of Maa Vista & Eons Ballroom.

So now I paraphrase Jake Ryan and say "Happy Birthday, Lacy. Make a wish." I hope that if it hasn't already, it does come true.

Promising Surfer Series - Harbor Piers

submitted by Marianna Monentes

As Second Life (SL) surfing rolls into the Second Life Surfing Association (SLSA) 2010 surfing season, SurfWatch is dedicated to bringing to you those surfers that stand out from the pack in the Promising Surfers series. This edition, we're proud to present: Harbor Piers.

SurfWatch:  How does it feel to have stood on that winners podium?

Harbor Piers:  Simply put, it felt good. I had so much fun surfing that day and with placing 36th in the previous season's Mori Comp, standing on the podium was rewarding.

SW:  You placed 2nd with Desirae Beaumont and Bobbi Laval at Mori Pwani Invitational. What was that like to be in a 3 way tie?
HP:  To stand at the podium with Desi and Bobbi was an honor. These are surfers that I have always looked up to and who mean a lot to SL surfing in general. It wasn't long ago that Bobbi was teaching me how to surf fluffies, and now being at the podium with them was in a way, a humbling experience.

SW:   You just recently placed 3rd at SurfJam 15 at Mori. Way to go!  Tell us about the day. What was the highlight?
HP:  The day was really fun. SJ 15 really showcased what SL surifng is all about, especially with the no mod board rule. I had so much fun surfing and being able to surf fluffs. Honestly, the highlight of that day was me seeing MarkFoo (Waverider) make some really great pipe transitions. This may sound funny but it almost felt inspirational and motivating at the same time. Being at the podium with Mark and Kim Henig was an honor.

SW:  When did you begin surfing?
HP:  If I remember, I began surfing about a week after my first rezz day. Back then, I only came on SL once in a while, but when I did, I was surfing. I'd say I surfed on SL about 6 months before I gave the thought of competition any consideration. In Real Life (RL),  I feel surfing isn't about winning and losing, but when I realized that the community and love of surfing all come together in a virtual world for a compeition, I couldn't pass it up.

SW:  You are Team Boracay's owner and Captain. What is your best advice you give?
HP:  My best advice for a competition is to have fun and to do your thing.

SW:  What is the best surfing tip you have received?
HP:  This is a tough question. Many people have tried to help me with bits and pieces of it all that finally come together. The best surfing tip is to enjoy yourself, because if you can do that, you can't go wrong.

SW:  Who gave you the best surfing advice?
HP:  Many surfers have given me advice. Even the tiniest bits of advice go a long way. Off the top of my head, I'd like to thank Triston Mayo, Bobbi Lavel, Wicked Carver, Sexyboy Oh, Giavanna Melody, Kimmy Jigsaw, Marianna Monentes, Desirae Beaumont, and anyone and everyone that I have come into contact with at one time or another.

SW:  What is your favorite aspect of SL surfing?
HP:  My favorite aspect is the feeling you can get from sitting out past the breakers waiting for your ride, completely alone on a sim, or even with a crowded lineup. Also, the community of surfing. I just love the fact that we are a group of different people all coming together for the love of surfing, shredding and spinning like maniacs (laughs).

SW:  Do you surf in RL?
HP:  Yes, I do since I've been about 5 years old. Being from Jersey, it's hard to get to surf often during the winter, but those few months of summer and even the fewer amounts of good surf days are completely worth it. It is a huge passion of mine, and it is something I hold very close to my heart.

SW:  What prompted you to try SL surfing ?
HP:  The very first thing I ever did in Second Life was go to the old Reaction Surf Shop at Boneyard. I think I actually saw it under the "Showcase" section and just being a curious second life noob, decided to teleport. When there, I seemed to have met the nicest people who helped me out. From there, I also went to Quan Li Namiko shop where I talked to an original SL surfer, Aries Ashton, who led me to Weather Island. Then I met Sebastian (Saramago)at Weather Island, who gave me a board to use. I've been surfing ever since.

SW:  Whats your favorite board?
HP:  Currently, my favorite board is the board I surfed SurfJam 15 with, which is the SJA surfboard Fish Basic. I also recently had a new design made for one of my boards, which is a seagull in flight, designed by Angelle Aluveaux.

SW:  What advice would you give to a beginning surfer?
HP:  Enjoy yourself and welcome to SL surfing! Also, be patient. I don't know about all the surfers, but I am here to help any new surfers learn anything I can offer.  So if you are a new surfer, feel free to contact me. Have Fun!

Surf's Up! West of Ireland

Issued: March 19, 2010

PRESS RELEASE
IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEDIA CONTACT
Sioban McMahon, West of Ireland CEO
Sioban.McMahon@gmail.com

West of Ireland, Second Life – The Second Life charity estate West of Ireland’s (WOI) Festival of Saint Patrick is drawing to a conclusion,  and among the closing events are the announcement of the winning entry in the Surfboard Design Competition, and two Surfing Competitions: Pro on Saturday, March 20; and an Invitational on Saturday, March 27.

The Surfboard Design competition began in February with the initial open submission of designs. The textures, intended for the loaner surfboards available on WOI’s surfing beaches, were to be emblematic
of the charity estate’s mission: to promote Irish culture and raise money for the real world charity Project Children. The entries were reviewed by a panel of judges, and five designs were chosen as finalists. Surfboards bearing the work of designers JamesB Allen, Doxx Dryke (2 entries), Mick Lunasea and Dixson Martian were put on display in late February and opened to a popular vote by the public to determine the winning design. The competition remained very close for the duration of the public voting between February 27th and March 18th. As it came to a conclusion, the margin grew and the winning design pulled ahead by 18 votes.

It was announced on Thursday, March 18th at Nancy Blake’s Pub on the WOI sim that the design of JamesB Allen had been declared the winner.  The vibrant design features a crimson mottled water pattern on the top that grades into emerald green as it wraps to the bottom, bears the triskele, and recognizes WOI’s connection to Project Children both in text, and with a beautiful image of a child’s face. Mr. Allen will be
awarded a voucher for a fully modifiable SSi Surfboard Template donated by Sebastian Saramago of Surf Systems Inc. - a 2500L$ value.

The WOI Pro Surfing Competition will begin at 11am SLT on Saturday, March 20th and will be held on Bundoran Reef in the WOI sim. The Pro round is the qualifying round for the Invitational which will commence at the same time the following Saturday, March 27, where the qualified surfers will join those already ranked in the top 20 by the SLSA.  Bundoran Reef will be closed to the public one hour prior to the
competition to control lag for those competing. A three-layered area for spectators will be set up 30 to 40 meters in the air on adjoining Neart near the Bundoran sim border for those who want to observe the
competition.

The West of Ireland has some of the best surfing beaches in Second Life, including both “fluffies” and a pipeline wave on Bundoran, and an epic wave designed by Heather Goodliffe on Neart. Proceeds from
all events in the WOI charity estate go to benefit Project Children: second life activity with a positive real world impact.

Project Children is an international organization that takes children from Northern Ireland on summer trips to stay with host families in the United States. Catholic and Protestant children are brought together in a calm and multi-cultural environment in an effort to overcome the stronghold of prejudices that have burdened Northern Ireland for so long. The South Texas Celtic Music Association (STCMA) raises funds for Project Children at its annual Celtic Music Festival and through the Second Life West of Ireland charity estate to pay the transportation costs for children participating in Project Children.
