Splash Kidd to Rock Burn 2 Thursday Night!

Breaking News: SLSA announces by-election this Sunday

submitted by Ashleigh Dickins

In a notice sent out today by board member Kantbe Thursday the SLSA board has announced that Countess Decosta has resigned from the SLSA board due to real life events. According to the SLSA constitution,
2.3.2. By-Elections Should a vacancy occur in the SLSA Board between scheduled elections such vacancy shall be filled with a by-election of SLSA Members eligible to vote within 4 days of the vacancy. The director elected in such a by-election shall fill the remaining term of the director replaced.
The announcement sent this morning states the by-election will be held in accordance with the constitution this Sunday, October 24th, 2010. The elected candidate will serve as director for the remainder of Countess' term, with the slot being up for re-election as usual on December 1, 2010. The board is currently seeking candidates for the by-election. Intent to run must be submitted along with statement of team, product and sim affiliations in a notecard to the remaining board: Harbor Piers, Abel Halderman, Syx Toshi and Kantbe Thursday. See the excerpts from the constitution below regarding eligibility to run for a director position.

2.1. SLSA Members eligible to vote. 2.1.1. From the date of joining or rejoining the SLSA a Member is only eligible to vote for Directors of the SLSA Board, under one or more of the following conditions: An SLSA Member must have competed (and been assigned a score) in at least one of the previous six SLSA sanctioned competitions prior to the election. An SLSA Member shall be an SLSA Hall Of Fame inductee. An SLSA Member must have served as an appointed officer or director at, at least, one of the previous three SLSA sanctioned competitions prior to the election. 2.2. SLSA Director Eligibility Any individual who is a current member of SLSA and who is an eligible voter is eligible to hold office as a Director of the SLSA Board, within the following rule(s): 2.2.1. Not more than two (2) representatives from the same surf team (as defined in section 1.5. the same surf product vendor company (product developers, not affiliate sellers) the same surf sim(s) ownership group (sim owners, not sim renters) shall be Directors of the SLSA Board at any single time. Candidates will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis for this election condition. (e.g Continuing Director A is Surf Team X, Candidate B and Candidate C are also Surf Team X, then Candidate B would be accepted as a nominee if their application was received first, Candidate C’s nomination would not be accepted) A current SLSA member who is not an eligible voter may petition the board for the privilege of running for a Director seat. Their petition must state why their candidacy would be a benefit to the SLSA. If the board unanimously agrees that it is in the best interest of the SLSA the eligible voter requirement may be waived. This will be on a case-by-case basis and does not imply an endorsement of the particular candidate.

Kantbe Serious: Happy Birthday Archipelago!

submitted by Kantbe Thursday

Can you believe it? The SLSA Archipelago home is a year old this month! It was actually acquired in mid-September of last year, but the terraforming, the set up of the meeting hut, and the stage that flows into the dance floor on St. James wasn't ready until October.

Here are a few photo's taken that very first day when the SLSA flag was planted for the very first time. Notice it's original topography and compare it to today's. See if you can identify any of the people standing around the flag. (answers provided below).

Can you guess who the first person was to surf at Archipelago? No, not her…. sorry, wasn't him either… yep, that's right, it was Sally LaSalle. I can't tell from this picture if she was one of the guitar pickers for the Grand Opening Event, but it sure looks to me like there's a backup singer/dancer with a flower in her hair in the background.

Rumor has it that MaryAnn Maa is working on a little celebration birthday party and Halloween affair. You can keep up with things by watching the SLSA forum, the web site, or join the new Archipelago Events subscriber that's out on the beach or up by the dance floor.

Turn your screen upside down to see the list of SLSA flag planters:

Tauri's Tidbits and Sticky Situations #8

We were recently having a convo about Second Life (SL) situations and talking about SL etiquette - is there such a thing? You know, the kinds of things you run into in SL and are not sure of the proper way to handle. We'll be periodically posting these dilemmas and looking for genuinely constuctive feedback on your opinion. If you have a comment or a dilemma of your own, let us know and we'll add it to the list!

If a friend asks you to test a poseball with them, and you clearly see that it is not a poseball position you are comfortable being in with that friend, how do you get out of it?

Bundoran Reef Open pre-Comp Party

submitted by Kantbe Thursday

If ya'll didn't catch MaryAnn Maa's pre-Comp party at Archipelago/St. James the Friday before the Bundoran Reef Open, ya missed some great entertainment. Sonyajevette Charisma and Red Oran were booked for 2 hours of live Rhythm and Blues.
Keep your eyes peeled for other entertaining and fun activities taking place on Archipelago, the SLSA's home sim. Check out the new Subscribe-O-Matic on the beach and dancefloor, and watch the Event Timer on the SLSA's homepage.

I've heard rumors pumpkins are already popping up all over the beach, and Mary has been seen in public wearing pumpkin themed clothing.

Spotted: Tiny Dancer turns Tiny Surfer

submitted by Ashleigh Dickins

In my running around the grid recently I came across a familiar name, but not a familiar face. Sierra Sugar had turned tiny dancer and was about the size of my shoe as she DJ'd her Friday night rock set. Also in attendance was Colleen Brennan and Kim Henig, who had the idea to put tiny Sierra on a tiny surfboard. Luscious Starship was called in to produce a tiny scripted board based on her LSD line of boards. Within an hour there was a tiny Big Dawg board for a tiny Sweet Kitty!

No time was wasted in getting to the waves, only pausing long enough for me to grab a butterfly net in case Sierra fell off the board into the deep ocean. Colleen and Kim acted as life guards and helped tiny Sierra paddle out. Check out the photo I took below of tiny Sierra on her tiny Big Dawg board headed for a not so tiny wave.

Ashleigh's Advice #3 - Octoberville

submitted by Ashleigh Dickins

Now that I’ve got the In-World volume 6 behind me, and in front of you, I’m going to take a few minutes to do more advice! It’s finally fall, my favorite season, I love the colors and the clothes. October is the start for me of the most wonderful time of the year, a non-stop flow of holidays that provide gifts and excuses for food.

In SecondLife one of the early staples of this time of year is Octoberville. Octoberville is actually a game, a detailed hunt with clues and a plot, that takes place in a sim called PixelTrix. The sim is completely taken over by a spooky, dangerous town filled with ghastly images, spiderwebs, pumpkins, and vintage charm. To start the game you simply go into the Police Precinct, right on the corner of the landing point, and pick up your detective kit from the officer’s desk. For the game you are a detective with the Octoberville Police investigating the spooky happenings of the town, and why so many spirits seem to linger. If you need help there are avid fans who dedicate their time as roleplayers, who add to the richness of the sim, and are willing to give a new gamer a point in the right direction.

I definitely advise checking out Octoberville, and be aware that it can be quite laggy due to so many people, so it's best to strip down like it's a competition. Also be aware that the hunt takes quite some time and consists of mini games to unlock some of the items. Also the sheer # of items takes up a good deal of time scouring the sim, I recommend breaking it down over days. If you’re not much for hunting Octoberville is still worth checking out for the visuals, intricate builds, haunted house and of course, the Octoberville Express train ride through the sim.

Teleport to Octoberville.

Mari's Mailbag: Changing Tides

submitted by Marianna Monentes

With the closing of Mori Pwani you may think "oh its ok a new surf sim will spring up". Have to tell you a surf sim may spring up but not the same ambiance. Sure, same people will go check it out and may decide to frequent it but there is so much more to a surf sim than a few visits here and there. Mori Pwani has a life of its own. I feel the creators are the ones that bring that life...their visions. To blend it all skillfully to create a perfect surf destination. It's the same as I have always said, "The art of surfing, gradually becomes a masterpiece." The same holds true for the surf sim. It may be born over night but to skillfully create that masterpiece takes vision, time and the almighty linden or dollar. Then it requires many of us frequenting it and tipping when we do to keep it afloat. So yes, more will spring up, but will it be another Mori Pwani? Nope. It will have it's own life. Its own ambiance. For how long? If none of us respect it, that too will fade into the virtual sunset.
