The Legends Series: Interview with SexyBoy Oh (Originally Posted 4/11/2009)

Within the pages of SurfWatch is the rich history of Second Life (SL) surfing from the mouths of the surfers that created or developed or promoted or excelled in this virtual sport over the years.  Enjoy these interviews and the perspective from these surf legends as SurfWatch continues "The Legends Series".

Submitted by Abel Halderman, Special Correspondent

SurfWatch recently caught up with SexyBoy Oh, the hottest new surfer to medal in the Second Life Surfing Association (SLSA) competition circuit, to find out the secret to his success.

SurfWatch: Who is SexyBoy Oh?
SexyBoy Oh: Sexyboy Oh is a pure gamer who landed in SL.

SW: But you're an individual, too. Who are you? If you had to describe yourself in three sentences.
SO: I'm someone marginal who walks where life brings him. I'm eccentric. I'm creative and like innovation. Also, I'm someone with a big heart who cares for people.

SW: You got famous because of your great results in competitions. How does it feel to come out of nowhere and rock the surf scene?
SO: It's cool. I worked very hard those last three months for it, and it seems to have paid off. It's showing me I can distinguish myself with the veteran.

SW: That's true. How would you describe your surfing? What makes it unique?
SO: I think what makes my style unique is I'm new. I have observed all the veterans, adopting mostly the same kind of style cause they evolved with the board and the wave. And me, I came after all the waves and boards were set up. I learned alone spending long hours, so I have built my own way to surf with what was present around me.

SW: Recently you joined Vibrations team. Why Vibes?
SO: When I started to surf, I met Cloudy Matova. She told me about VSA, the Vibers and SLSA. When Mori was first created, I started to hang here and met the Vibers pro surfers. I have shared time with them, and they became friends and people that I respect in the surf community. Also, they saw me evolve along the weeks, how I was progressing.

SW: Any favorite surfers that you learned the most from?
SO: It's hard to say. I got my base from youtube videos people have made like Colleen Brennan, Wil DeCuir and Cip Grut. Many surfers gave me hints and tips along my learning. I might forget to mention them all but they know who I'm talking about.

SW: What's the main goal for you in SL surfing?
SO: My main goal was to raise to the same level as the veteran and to win one SLSA competition. Now that I've acheived that, I think, I'm trying to fix some new goal.

SW: Is there anything you would like to add about SL surfing?
SO: I wish I could share my passion for SL surfing with the new arrivals on the beach. I have some new tricks not done in SL surfing before. It's my secret weapon to win JJ Lanes.

Opal's Gems: Aloha Beach takes you to Hawaii

Submitted by Opal Rivers

Join the pages of SurfWatch as we explore Opal's Gems of Second Life (SL) surf sims.

This time my travels have led me to Aloha Beach, Legasta (168,221,21).  This beach sim presents itself as an weathered sim with a deserted looking beach town.  The road and docks are in a state of disrepair and the buildings are worn by the harsh climatic elements typical of living on an island.  It does not take long to realize that you are in an authentic looking community on a Hawaiian Island.  The sim's owner, Hina (Ikapono.catnip), had taken a few vacations to the Hawaiian Islands and decided to recreate Waikiki’s North shore in his sim.  After a year of building and working on this sim, Aloha Beach opened on April 30th of this year.  Although there was a language barrier as I do not speak Japanese, Hina very graciously took us on a wonderful hang gliding tour of the sim that you can access at the top of the highest mountain.

The rez point lands you very close to an awesome skateboard park where you can rez a free skateboard.  Riding the rails and doing tricks like the X Game pros is amazing.  There are a few businesses open along the road leading to the beach.  I personally do not recommend eating in that diner and have called the health inspector for a visit.  The motel is also of questionable quality.  As you continue down the broken roadways, you come to a hangout beach access area.  The surfers here sure got creative with the seating arrangement.   There is also a great bike that gives some exciting photo opportunities.
This sim supports everything necessary in a premier surf sim with board rezzers and waves with nice surfing action.   The landmark for the sim reads, "Aloha Beach is most suitable for those who enjoy surfing".  This is most definitely true.

A great place to spend time is at the banana tree farm overlooking the surf.  I also love the appearance of the lava fields on the mountain tops.  Hina’s favorite views are from his house watching the sunset.
There are several creative and fun ways to hang out with friends and enjoy great views.  Aloha Beach will make you feel that you’re on the best vacation ever.

Exploring the Wave Report: ** THE BEACH ** Rezzing Area

My mission is to hit up every beach in the SurfWatch Wave Report and see who I find and what it's like!

First, you go to the right sidebar of SurfWatch and click on the Wave Report.

Thanks to Kantbe Thursday, this list takes you to a one-click link to all the surfing beaches in Second Life.

First stop:  **THE BEACH**.  On the LM, **THE BEACH** is described as an Adult Public Sandbox & Nude Beach.  So sandboxes are always useful!  And nude beach?  Well, let's go have a look!
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Jeepster/57/146/21

The tunes are pop:  Seven Lions & Echos - Cold Skin.  I landed right in the surfboard rez area offering me a test board - great for peeps new to the surf scene!  And on top of that, a Surfboard Sale along with other things for sale like skins, swimsuits, etc.

Pretty deserted on my visit but it was a weekday and early SL morning.  Someone left a jet ski just waiting to be revved and a pool ball.

There's a huge party deck for hanging out with friends and an upper deck with game tables.  The shop KYXE Designs is on the sim for shopping so it seems a little overkill to have so many advertising boards marring the beach view.
There are some comfy beach chairs along the shoreline and a POMF wave made by Denise Foxtrot rolling into shore.

I rezzed my board but couldn't click it because of all the effect waves on top, so I bumped it out of the rez area and was able to sit on it but it seemed stuck in the current.  I couldn't get it to move so I used the board rezzer and rezzed an LSD test board.  The wave is short but it's a long run in so you can practice your turns.

My experience?  It's a great spot to catch this wave and work on turns.  It's probably a fun place to hang out with friends and maybe even to do a little shopping.  Check it out for yourself and let us know your experience there!

Kantbe Serious: Could Be Found - The Answers

Submitted by Kantbe Thursday

OK, y'all.  Here come the answers to the Kantbe Found series.  I know some of you figured these out, but if we find answers provided by some of you happen to own the sims in the pictures, sadly, your answers will have to be disqualified from the competition and will not be receiving any of the prizes.

So let's get started.  In the order of the series, here they are:

Kantbe Found #1

Kantbe Found #2

Kantbe Found #3

Kantbe Found #4

Kantbe Found #5

Kantbe Found #6

Kantbe Found #7

And now the announcement of the prize winners!!!!

Oh... wait... emergency call from Tauri Tigerpaw... what's that?  Oh... OK... sorry about that.

Well folks, it turns out there are a couple of issues with the prizes...  There's some good news and there's some bad news.

The bad news is we didn't actually keep records on peoples' answers, so we don't actually know who our winners are.

The good news is there weren't any prizes anyway!!!  :-)

It was all just for the fun of it!!  Right?...  Right?...  Hey!  Is there anyone still out there?

The Legends Series: Interview with Robin Mapp (Originally Posted 6/21/2009)

SurfWatch recently caught up with Robin Mapp, a name most SL surfers will recognize as the former owner of Surf City, current surfboard designer, and proponent of realism in SL surfing, to discuss his surfing background and current views on SL surfing.

SurfWatch: How did you get started in SL surfing? Who taught you, what waves did you ride, and what board did you ride?

Robin Mapp: SL surfing is actually what brought me to SL in the first place - well, kept me here, anyways (smiles). I started out with what was available - fluffs. I have always been a hack, so when I saw guys out surfing, never thinking it looked real enough to me, I said to myself, "Wonder if I could build something more real?" Thru some experimentation and lots of trial and error, I came up with my first line of boards. They were completely different than the SSI's available at the time, but had one drawback - they wouldn't work on the fluffies. So in need of a wave, I started messing with some ideas and finally came up with a wave that worked with my boards but, as luck would have it, wouldn't work with the SSI boards. So again, not where I was hoping to be. As time progressed and I started hanging with guys like Flynn Sheridan and Thor Bishop, I gained a new appreciation of SL surfing and their dream of making a very realistic experience, sharing their passion and their commitment to surfing as a whole.

SW: You had the Surf City sim for a long time. What made you start that and why did it go away?
RM: Surf City was a dream of mine. Growing up and living in Huntington Beach, California, aka "Surf City", I was part of the iconic surf scene since the 70s. I wanted to bring that to SL. I wanted to build an actual surf legend and not your typical tropical beach surf venue. Lack of funds and assistance, Surf City was just more than I could handle. The dream still lives and maybe one day, the rebirth of Surf City will happen.

SW: How long have you been competing and what made you want to start?
RM: I have competed off and on for around 2 years now. Why? I'm a surfer. I love the environment and the people. The competitions were just plain fun!

SW: What advice would you give new surfers today?
RM: Decide: Do you wanna surf or do ya wanna play games? And have fun with whichever you decide (smiles).

SW: What's your favorite wave?
RM: I love pipes. To me, they offer the most realistic experience.

SW: What board to you use now and why?
RM: I use an RJ board, of course. Mainly because I have tailored them around my style of surfing - fast, clean and realistic.

SW: Do you have a favorite or trademark maneuver?
RM: I love snap turns and reverse rollovers. Once I figured these maneuvers out, I was like, "That seems like RL surfing."

SW: How would you like to see SL surfing evolve?
RM: I would really like to see SL surfing become more realistic. I know many think that is nuts, but to me, SL is more than a game, it's a virtual environment. We want real looking waves, real looking and performing boards, but yet, many of us are okay with totally non real surfing.

SW: Tell us about the Da Hui Team: the members, how you guys train, your philosophy, etc.
RM: Da Hui (The Group or Team in Hawaiian) was founded on the premise of enjoying SL surfing and trying to bring a bit of RL surfing attitude to SL. The members of Da Hui are all either past or present RL surfers or those that have at least been surfing. With that under our belts, we try to demonstrate the RL philosophies of surfing such as camaraderie, a deep sense of the connection to the sea and, of course, all the terrific sarcasm (smiles).

SW: Talk about your current sim.
RM: Current sim is just a homestead Monq (Monq Pinklady) and I have. We have it set up for a place to play and practice. It's pretty much your tropical island with tons of waves.

SW: What other projects are you currently involved in?
RM: Currently I am just making new boards and being a surf bum. I have no immediate plans to do more than have fun.

You can find Rob John's boards at your favorite beach.

I love this beach hut and I decorated it myself with merchandise from Zinnia's. The only thing that did not come from Zinnia's is the bed which is called the "Warm" Antique Bed Adult.

The beach hut is available on Marketplace and is made by
Trompe Loeil - Seaside Cottage V2.

The photos show it all!

Landmarks to Trompe Loeil Marketplace and to the Zinnia's shop.
