Team Profile: Montego

Team Name:  Montego

Year Founded:  2009

Founder(s): Robbin Ember, Kohana Schimmer & Candywhite Compton

Owner/Captain:  Robbin Ember

Co-Captains:  Robbin Ember & Sunrize Mornington

Mentors:  Maxwell Silvansky

Current Team Standing:  Montego is currently ranked in first place as of this post, Season 1 2012.

Where did the team name come from:  It was named after a beach that Robbin Ember worked on at that time.

Why was this team started:  When Cornish disbanded, Montego was formed.

Pertinent history/team highlights:  Montego has gone through changes. The only original team member left surfing is Robbin Ember, Maxwell is still around as our supporter along with his trusty sidekick, Bandit. In 2010 It was like restarting the team with Robbin, Sunrize, Bodhi & Maldrul. The team has since grown as friendships formed. We are one big family of friends who care for each other and love surfing together.

How does this team train and how often: Montego has no real training program. The surfers meet up once or twice before a comp and chat, surf, basically have fun together. Of course we try to help answer each other's question about problems we may have with a wave or a board, but it is mainly a surf party with friends.

What is the basic philosophy behind this team in terms of SL surfing (reality vs. gaming): Fun In Friendship. The friendships are real and the surfing is something we all enjoy and love doing together.

What board does this team use and why? SSI. Some of Montego surfers prefer longboards and some short. Makes for a better balanced team.

What wave does this team prefer and why?  [no response]

What associations does this team compete in? SLSA, some independant comps ie. non SLSA sanctioned events

Who are the top scoring riders on this team? By the rankings for Season 1 2012 (as of this post): Sunrize Mornington, Jordan Mendle, Damiana Babcock, Maldrul Morris, Ashoka Moseley, Zelda Zimberman, Robbin Ember. All of Montego are top riders in Sunny's book. (That is a fact!)  We like to take turns being on the podium too. LOL

additional comments from co-founder, Robbin Ember:  The "thing about Sun, she kept this thing together and Mal, well he did too, and Bodhi... and I love them all so much..."

Kantbe Serious: FUN FACT

“HEY BRA!  WATCHU DOIN’?” For centuries surfing was a part of ancient Polynesian culture. Surfing may have been first observed by Europeans at Tahiti in 1767 by the crew of the “Dolphin” – the first Europeans to visit the island. OR botanist Joseph Banks -  part of the first voyage of James Cook on the “HMS Endeavour” in April 1769 on Tahiti. Lieutenant James King was the first to write about the art of surfing on Hawaii when completing the journals of Captain James Cook in 1779.
