“HEY BRA!  WATCHU DOIN’?” For centuries surfing was a part of ancient Polynesian culture. Surfing may have been first observed by Europeans at Tahiti in 1767 by the crew of the “Dolphin” – the first Europeans to visit the island. OR botanist Joseph Banks -  part of the first voyage of James Cook on the “HMS Endeavour” in April 1769 on Tahiti. Lieutenant James King was the first to write about the art of surfing on Hawaii when completing the journals of Captain James Cook in 1779.
