Leap Day - Your Extra Day!

Some things you may not know about February 29:

  • February 29 doesn't come around every year.  It takes the Earth 365 1/4 days to revolve around the sun.  Every 4 years, that 1/4 equals a whole extra day, turning into February 29!
  • It was the early Romans who designated February 29 as leap day.
  • A calculation for a Gregorian calendar was established in the 16th century to include leap day in years only divisible by 4.
  • There is a tradition originating in 5th century Ireland of women proposing to men on leap year day
  • There was a law in Scotland forbidding a man to decline a February 29 proposal.
  • People born on leap year day are called "leaplings".
Is there some other leap year tidbit rolling around in your head?  Share it with us!

Grab A Wave...

The other day I stopped by Solace Dreams for a relaxing stroll along the beach. I was enjoying the view of the Sunset waves rolling in across the water and happened to notice a few green dots on my radar near the board rezzer. I headed over to find some people I had never met before talking in local chat about how cool everything was. I said hello and enjoyed some friendly surf conversation.

A guy named LoneSurfer was teaching beginner surfers Crafty and Shady how to rez boards and learn the basic controls. I thought to myself how cool this was so I shared with each of them a copy of SurfWatch In World Magazine and posted the SurfWatch blog address in local chat. LoneSurfer responded with an enthusiastic "Thanks Dude!" I think they were all amazed at how deep the Surfing Culture is in SL.

I stood on the beach and watched them surf for a bit. Wasn't too long until I started searching my mess I call my inventory folder for my favorite pair of blue Splendeurs Maresia boardies. AHHHH FOUND THEM!!! I tossed them on, grabbed a Second Life Surfing Association (SLSA) rezzer board and paddled out to the lineup buoy. It was very awkward for me because it was the first time out on a board in well over 4 months, and even more different without someone special riding on the back with me.

After a few waves I met another surfer named Melian Catronis who was tuning up for an upcoming Pro Comp Series. We talked about boards and competitions and mingled with the other surfers for bit. Everyone was excited and stoked about surfing in their own way, so it was naturally time for a PARTY WAVE!!!! We paddled out and all jumped a wave together, everyone was twisting and spinning and jumping in every which way and direction. Afterwards we all paddled back in to the board rez area and Melian said, "Every now and then, you just have to go out and make a wave your (female dog)! Crafty added, " That was fun! I can't believe Cadwallader isn't here... we know about this place thanks to him".

So, after being off the waves for a few months, it really was nice to be able to go out and enjoy a fun evening of surfing with some really nice folks who all had their own special surf vibe. If you been away like me, I encourage you to come on out and grab a wave sometime!

Surf Safe!

Candidates Announced - SLSA March 1st Elections

Submitted by Cierra Theriac

The Second Life Surfing Association (SLSA) Board member elections are coming up on March 1st. There are two openings and two candidates have submitted themselves for consideration: Revlon (Revy) Benoir and Imzadi Amaterasu.

Below are their submissions to the board:

Revlon Benoir
"I Revlon "Revy" Benoir would like to place myself in consideration of the position of SLSA Director.

I am available for the full term from March 1st, 2012 through August 31st, 2012.

I am affiliated with T'ai Ch'i Zen as a surfer and team lead.

I am a Gold Level SLSA Sponsor and the owner of the Enchanted Break sim. My SIM is currently registered as a venue in the current season.

I am the originator and organizer of the yearly Surf Festival.

My vision for the SLSA mirrors the spirit of my Surf Festivals. The festivals give the community a chance to step back and take a breath and just let surfing in Second Life be fun.

We do this by including everyone and working together. The very first artwork I created said For Surfers By Surfers and I have placed that on ever piece of artwork since that time.

It is my belief that the SLSA is for Surfers By Surfers. I am not going to promise that I will come in and "FIX" any single issue. But I will promise to be open and honest with every surfer that cares to share a concern with me. One of my favorite quotes is from Margaret Mead:

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

Namaste
Revy

(Editor's Note:  Revlon Benoir was given special permission by the current SLSA Board to run as, per eligibility rules, she had not competitively surfed in the required number of competitions within the required time frame.)

Imzadi Amaterasu
My name is Imzadi Amaterasu.

I am interested in serving another term on the SLSA's Board of Directors. I think I could continue to contribute ideas and help see things thru as I have in the past. I believe I am a strong team player and can separate my own interests for whats best for the SLSA community as a whole.

I am a member of Team Surfcrazy. I do not have a product or own a sim myself but I am General Manager of Lightening Video, an SLSA sponsor. I also manage Jaguar and 4 others.

Thanks for your time in reading my application.
Zadi"

Noob and Now!

Submitted by Maxwell Silvansky

Hey Fellow Surfer,

SurfWatch is doing a new segment called "Noob & Now" and we need your help.

Dig through that mess you call your inventory folder and look for one of those old profile pictures you were so proud of when you first started in Second Life. Then find one of your more current breathtaking glamour shots. Be sure to rename your photos with your Avi's name like so…

Maxwell Silvansky Noob
Maxwell Silvansky Now

Then send both photos to me in world (make sure they are full perms), and SurfWatch will then present your "Noob & Now" transformation for all in the surf community to admire.

Thanks again for participating and surf safe!

Breaking News - Goodbye Tsunami

Sources report that Tsunami Surf Beach has been reclaimed by the sim owner and the Freeport Shops on the Tsunami Boardwalk are being returned.  Colleen Brennan, owner of Tsunami Surf Beach, has not logged into Second Life (SL) since December 24, 2011, and she is greatly missed by her many friends.  Many of the surf community in SL are saddened by this loss and send Colleen their best thoughts and wishes.  Please feel free to leave a message for Colleen in the comments section and we'll hope that they will get thru to her.

Extreme SL - Meet Xander Datura!

Extreme sports - skydiving, base jumping, skateboarding, scuba diving, BMX and motocross, jetskis and wakeboarding - Second Life (SL) needs a shot of adrenalin in the form of extreme sports! SurfWatch recently caught up with Xander Datura, organizer of Asylum Sports, the group to join to be in the loop on extreme sports in SL!

SurfWatch (SW): We are all excited to hear more about extreme sports in SL. Is it an organized group or more a series of events?
Xander Datura: Well... it's a lot of separate enthusiasts and sports atm, thats why I was so stoked about Asylum :P. I always loved trying them all out, and trying out all the gear, so I tried to assemble the most realistic designers I could and am working to cross promote some events. Comps will come... but just for fun.
SW:  So you're the founder of Asylum Sports?
Xander Datura:  I'm not really a founder of anything...I'm just a loose rattling NUT on this wheel of all of us crazies :P.  If it wasn't for the support of amazing people in every community, and in my personal life, Asylum never would have even been an idea.  It's my love and passion for each sport and the people in it that keeps me going...and I'm nothing but a pawn and player in it all :>.
SW: What are the sports included so far?
Xander Datura: Well, got a place for surfing of course :P. Skydiving, base jumping, skateboarding, scuba diving, and working on other sports that can use the same setups.. like BMX and motocross... jetskis and wakeboarding. We hope to do some live music, as well.
SW: Will there be competitions or any kind of tracking, or is it just free for all, go do it all?
Xander Datura: There will be some minicomps from time to time. The skydiving guys at Booville would like to host a surfing event, for example, which I'm looking forward to. I'm helping with the details. Then the skydivers will get a taste of the surfing world and vice versa for the surfers learning about the skydiving places and people in SL. Each group has a great bunch of people in it. Asylum just kinda throws them all together and introduces people to new things they might not have known existed otherwise :D.
SW: This sounds like so much fun!!!
Xander Datura: It is.  As I was showing my surfer buds the skydiving, they all loved it. Same with showing people surfing from other groups. For a lot of people, I think it's one of those type of things, they don't go looking for it, but once they try it out, they love it. That's what it's all about, spreading the word and growing the communities... everyone benefits.
SW: Is the sim officially open to the public?
Xander Datura: It's open to the public now. Got some of the shops still getting settled with the gear... then will be ready to make it official. But it's ready to be used now, and the more people that check it out, the better! Plus if anyone has suggestions or ideas to add, it can be done, too!! It's a giant playground... without people to play, it's just... ground :P. Asylum is non profit, too. I don't design anything, so it will run on donations and by people supporting the shops :D.

Check out Asylum Sports sim at *http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/asylum%20Reef/181/192/27*. SurfWatch is very proud to be covering Asylum Sports extreme sports in SL, and will be passing along all the information you need and want to be SL extreme!  Join the group at the group joiner on the sim (URL: secondlife:///app/group/c5dcb44e-0dd4-048c-f127-695be2ed1fa1/about) to get all the information you need to be SL extreme!

Introducing SurfWatch's Newest Team Member!

SurfWatch would like to welcome Cierra Theriac as our newest member of the SurfWatch Team! Cierra will be keeping readers updated on Second Life Surfing Association (SLSA) happenings. For those of you new to the surf scene, Cierra has a long history with SL surfing, including helping to found the SLSA and serving as one of the first directors; being a co-creator and co-owner, along with her partner, Flynn Sheridan, of La Bahia, one of the best early surf spots on the SL surf scene; and being involved in the creation of some of the first SL surfing videos.

Flynn Sheridan described it best in his first SurfWatch interview posted back on March 22, 2008:

“I think that most people don't know how much Cierra Theriac did while she was a director. She helped me pull together and write the foundations of the SLSA rulebook. Until she left office she made all the banners, rashies, and competitor packages. She set up the SLSA website, creating the layout and content, and kept it all up to date until long after she left office. And she marshalled at two competitions. Yep all of that was the wonderfully unspoken and often unnoticed grunt work that takes hours to do but is essential for the party to happen. It was a hell of a lot more than I ever did, and yet she has been in the shadow by my limelight. So I thank you publicly, "Cierra, Thank you!""

SurfWatch is proud to have Cierra on the team!

Tanya Palienta is celebrating her birthday this week. Let's all surprise her by dropping by Girls on Film sometime between 3PM and 5PM SLT on Friday the 17th to wish her Happy Birthday!  We'll be treated to DJ Moe and her Magical Mystery Tour of music.  No need for gifts. The best present you can give her is your presence and well wishes.

Archipelago

Submitted by CoolKat Delicioso on behalf of the Archi' Management Team

Archipelago

Archi' was created as a place for all surfers to come and relax, chill out with friends or alone, enjoy the waves, listen to great music and gently rekindle the stoke back into our second lives. We have tried to add an element of realism at Archipelago, and we hope you will all love the feel of the sim as much as we do.

Archipelago Hut Rentals

There are 4 surfer shacks available for rent.200prims @ 950lindens p/w

There is some low prim furniture available to use in the huts if residents wish to use it, but all or some can be removed should you wish to use your own and/or increase your prim count.

Each shack has an additional private sky platform when you require total privacy, which consists of a small beach, a walkable island and a tropical panoramic backdrop, .

Audio/ media streams

There is a movie/url/youtube viewer at Archi', available for renters to use. If you wish to have the media played through to your hut or skyplatform, a viewer will be rezzable where you wish to have it. There are no parcel divisions or banlines at Archi'. Why have we chosen to do it this way? Parcel divisions and banlines, I feel, can ruin the natural flow of a sim.  Plus it gives you a larger sky platform to us, if done this way.

We will endeavor to change the wave set each month and have at least one fun event or comp each month, too.  (Some scripted items may be requested to be removed from the sim in the event of a competition to reduce lag and an access list set up for such events).

So what are you waiting for!?  Come on over and enjoy the stoke with us, and if you want a rental, we'll set you up with one.

SurfWatch Historical Perspective - 2008

I hope you'll join me as we visit each year of SurfWatch from its start and hopefully share a smile at a remembered event, person, location.

The first posting that I could locate is January of 2008 for a total of 172 postings for 2008.   Barchan Paderborn started SurfWatch as a resource for Second Life (SL) surfers, to share information about the community and post live competition results.  He covered the majority of postings with contributions by Socks Clawtooth and my first series of surfing interviews.

January 2008, Barchan's first post covered Vibration Surf Alliance (VSA) Surf Jam competition at Majini beach, with Oneill Auer coming out as the winner.  Barch started a Surf Report covering Bundoran Reef, and ran the very first SL Surfing 101 with basic information for new surfers.

February 2008, the SLSA opened the Hall of Fame (HoF).  TCH, an SL retailer at the time, launched a new longboard.  The Surf Report covered Chi which has endured thru the years of SL surfing, as well as Monkeh Barrel and Majini. The Surfing Calender made it's debut to keep the community informed of upcoming events.  Barch covered Action's board burning as the competition between board makers heated up.  The SLSA's Monkeh Barrel surf comp was postponed due to scheduling conflicts, but heats were posted, and finally results were posted with Pova Rustamova coming out ahead.  DeVinna Toll was interviewed as one of the most talented surfers on the scene.  Jaqueline Infinity was announced as the winner of a private Reaction Pro surfing team comp.  Analog Surf's new board designs were posted.

March 2008, Buffy Munro took a Surf Jam competition win.  Surfline Shortboard Pro comp was postponed as SL experienced grid lock down issues and competition officials had concerns about waves.  Nature Beach and Tsunami, as well as updates to Team Tsunami, were announced.  SLSA director results were posted, as well as competition date changes.  Poid Mahovlich introduced her new psychedelic boards.  We posted an in depth interview with Flynn Sheridan.  The Surf Report covered Black River Harbor.  Tavarua Beach also received a posting.  LollyPop Congrejo's line of beachwear was debuted.  Socks Clawtooth covered Surfing Life.  We got our first hint of the potential problems with Havok4 bringing changes to SL's physics code.  While most new surfers to SL remain oblivious of Havok4, it had a very major impact on the interaction between board and wave.

April 2008, Surf Jam was the first competition held post Havok4 with Buffy Munro taking another win, and a specific Havok4 surf report write up posted.  The Surfline comp was moved to Rezzable Discover sims to circumvent SL issues.  Abel Halderman was the winner of the Shortboard Pro, with heats and live results posting, as well as a new SLSA board ruling announcement.  Majini prepared to host the Secondreef Windsurfing competition, a joint Real Life (RL)/SL windsurfing competition.  An indepth interview with Sidewinder Linden regarding Havok4 posted, as well as an interview with Robin Coche.  Socks Clawtooth surfed naked, as only a furry can.  Pova Rustamova was still on top for 2008 Season 1.

May 2008, Cipriano Grut was announced with winner of the Secondreef Windsurfing competition.  Reaction Longboard epic heats and results, along with Surf Jam results, were posted.  Quench Spotter won at Neart.  SLSA elections were covered.  Two new surf spots opened at Bishara.  VW Sands and Heather Goodliffe (HG) were interviewed.  Heather Goodliffe announced her board update program to align the surfboards with Havok4 changes.  Broadwater Antilles was announced as joining forces to create a massive watersports development in SL.  The Surf Report covered Kahuna Beach.  Socks Clawtooth covered the struggles of noob surfing with the hilarious Lady in Red.

June 2008, live results were posted for the Thor Bishop Shortboard Pro. The Flynn Sherican Invitational cancer benefit competition raised L230,000.   Surf Jam results were posted as well as the Brazilian Surf Association (ABSSL) results.  Wilfrid DeCuir won the TCH Surfers open.  The Surf Report spotlighted Costa Rica, with Surf's Up covering Cornish Surf Beach and Boneyard.  Pova Rustamova was announced season 1 champion.  Socks Clawtooth rolled out his "Where the Hell is Socks" video.  Desirae Beaumont was interviewed after her win at El Corazon.  Surfline shut down.  Surfwidow Beaumont windsurfer boards were reviewed.

July 2008, Surf City Classic posted results.  Surf City held the first SLSA event on a non-HG scripted board with the Rob John Noserider longboard.  TCH Surfers Open announced a new judging format and live results were posted.  A detailed piece on the requirements for a competition surfing sim posted.  The SLSA rolled out 2008 season 2 competition locations.  The SLSA also did a major overhaul of its constitution.  Shark surfboards were announced.  Socks Clawtooth posted his Rough Guide to SL Surfing which became the basis for SurfWatch's updated surfing and wave guide (see link at sidebar), kept current by Kantbe Thursday.  Surf's Up visited Sugar Beach.  Action Surf and Skate announced development of a new range of boards and waves and a search for volunteer beta testers.  Socks Clawtooth was interviewed.

August 2008, Pacific Coast Xtreme Tandem heats, team and results were posted.  The Cornish Classic Cup heats and live results posted.  Boneyard heats, lag concerns and live results posted.  TCH Surfers Open 2 live results were announced.  Surf Jam heats and results were announced, with Colleen Brennan taking first place.  Crab Island rolled out a new wave.  Wilfrid DeCuir was at the top for 2008 Season 2 champ.  The SLSA new consitution was voted in.  New SLSA team rules were announced.  The SLSA voted in new directors.  Analog Surf showcased Hawaiian classic boards.  A new surf  HUD enabling classic surfer poses while riding a board rolled out.  The new wing board was announced.   VW Sands and Lissa Pinion tied the knot at Wimbi.  Keala Mimistrobell was interviewed.  Socks questioned how many surfboards does one need in his Imelda Marcos comparison piece.

September 2008, three competitions happened in one weekend, with Surf Jam, Surf City Open and the Brazilian Surf competitions.  Heats and live reports from Morant Cays were posted.

October 2008, Chi registrations and results posted.  Surf Jam posted.  Wilfrid DeCuir took a season champ lead.  One Track Mind, an RL surf film, debuted on FB.  Socks' Spot of the Week covered Nymphs Beach.  The SLSA ruled on new board scripts.  TCH Estates headed for a watery grave, with "for sale" postings on eBay.  Heliopolis closed down.  Sebastian Saramago was interviewed.  A board design contest was held.

November 2008, the Brazilian Surfing Association held an event.  Surf Jam posted a competition video.  Majini Longboard Epic posted.  Socks Spot of the Week covered Grandblue Bella, Moana'Ina Beach and Easthaven.  VW Sands did a write up of The Essence of Surf Jam.

December 2008 ended with year with weekend competition coverage and a write up by Socks of Southend.

It was an exciting time for SL surfing - good natured competitions, the excitement of sharing SL surfing, new surf sims, surfing team spirit.  I was new to SL (born November 2007) when I first hit the beach and met Barch sitting in the lounge chairs at Majini.  Barchan talked to me about promoting SurfWatch at local events, and somehow it turned into a regular series of interviews of prominent people in SL surfing.  Even then, I felt it was important to document the history of SL surfing, and SurfWatch serves an important function in that regard.

What were you doing in SL in 2008?  Did you discover surfing?  Did you have an opportunity to catch a wave on some of those earliest surfing sims, or a surfing lesson with one of the pioneers of SL surfing?  If you have an SL surfing experience from back in 2008, please share it with us.

(For a more detailed look at specific postings, pictures and videos, scroll down the sidebar to the year and date of interest.)

SLSA Calls Election Re-Run

The Second Life Surfing Association (SLSA) released the following notecard on February 6, 2012, regarding the recent by-election, requesting a new election:

"Dear Voters,

After the conclusion of voting for the recent by-election, the sim went off-line for an extended period, while mainteance updates were made by Linden Labs, after the restart of the sim, it was found that the voting machine had been rolled back and that the voting records have been lost. We apologise to the candidates and the voters for this inconvenience, but unfortunetly will need to hold the election again. It's important to note that no-one at all has seen the result of the last election before it was wiped clear, hence proper protocol is to re-run the election. As a result a new election will be held for 24 hours from midnight tonight that is during the 24 hours of February 7th. We appreciate your patience and understanding, and in fairness to the two candidates, this is the best resolution of the issue we can offer.
SLSA Directors"

A Personal Thank You Note

As Lissa (Pinion) Sands moves ahead to new opportunities and activities within Second Life (SL), including combining her publishing expertise with the creative Ashleigh Dickins for the in-world edition of SurfWatch, SurfWatch and myself, personally, would like to thank Lissa with all my heart for her tireless efforts on behalf of the SurfWatch blog.  Unless you've been in the hotseat of responsibility for following up on information, finding stories, investigating, writing, editing, hounding other contributors, thinking up new ways to keep readers interested, dealing with all the various personalities, staying on top of and sometimes ahead of latest developments, it's difficult to understand the amount of time and depth of commitment involved in keeping SurfWatch viable.  Lissa has done an outstanding job as editor, and we look forward to her continued involvement as her schedule permits.

On behalf of SurfWatch, thank you, Lissa, for everything you've done in support of SurfWatch and the larger Second Life surfing community.  Your efforts are appreciated more than you know.

Letter from the Editor: A Surf Community

When I came to Second Life nearly 5 years ago, surfing was in its infancy. There were a handful of hardcore surfers from RL who were trying to bring that stoke into SL and thanks to Heather Goodliffe and Sebastian Saramago, who built the waves and the boards, and they came. Those were the days of meeting on a beach, tossing your board into the water and surfing with your friends.  Noobs were taught how to surf and everyone shared the love of surfing and camaraderie. The first comps were set up shortly after that and the SLSA was born.  VW Sands introduced me to surfing just before the first comp and I was hooked. I had never met a nicer bunch of folks and everyone was willing to help this noob and non RL surfer.  Parties, surfing, parties, and then more surfing. Those were the days. V, Flynn, Thor, Devi, Sizz, Robin, Colls, Socks...you guys rock!

Surfing has certainly grown from that handful of surfers to what we have now. With growth there is always growing pains. People have come and gone for a variety of reasons. Some did not feel welcome and for that I apologize on the behalf of the group. Some have moved on to other things to do in SL or other games or gawd forbid, RL. Some have gotten caught up in the drama that a large group inherently has. I cannot say that my time here has been all roses and chocolates, I can say that I have made amazing friends and so I have no regrets. Now it is time to find that stoke again in the community of SL surfing.

Working for SurfWatch first as a contributor, then taking over as Editor in Chief when RL claimed Tauri nearly two years ago, has always been an honor and I will continue to contribute to this amazing news source as I do feel whole heartily that without SurfWatch, things could be much different in a negative sense. I'm stepping back down into the contributor role as college classes have ramped up requiring more of my time and my desire to focus on VW, Vibes, and friends requires my time as well. I will still be around of course and hope that others who have an interest will step up and contribute.

See you on the waves,
Lissa Pinion Sands
Editor in Chief
