Mari's Mailbag: Endless Summer

submitted by Marianna Monentes

Seems like summer is never going to end this year but then, why should it? An endless summer means surfing forever and to me, it doesn't get much better than that.

Found this in Wikipedia.com and thought you would enjoy reading about it:
"Director Bruce Brown follows two surfers, Mike Hynson and Robert August, on a surf trip around the world. Despite the balmy climate of their native California, cold ocean currents make local beaches inhospitable during the winter. They travel to the coasts of Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti and Hawaii in a quest for new surf spots and introduce locals to the sport. Other important surfers of the time, such as Miki Dora, Phil Edwards and Butch Van Artsdalen, also appear."

Its title comes from the idea, expressed at both the beginning and end of the film, that if one had enough time and money, it would be possible to follow the summer around the world, making it endless. The concept of the film was born through the suggestion of a travel agent to Bruce Brown during the planning stages of the film. The travel agent suggested that the flight from Los Angeles to Cape Town, South Africa, and back would cost $50 more than a trip circumnavigating the world. After which Bruce came up with the idea of following the summer season by traveling around the world.  The narrative presentation eases from the stiff and formal documentary of the 1950s and early 1960s to a more casual and fun-loving personal style filled with sly humor. The surf-rock soundtrack to the film was provided by The Sandals. The "Theme to the Endless Summer" was written by Gaston Georis and John Blakeley of the Sandals. It has become one of the best known film themes in the surf movie genre.

When the movie was first shown, it encouraged many surfers to go abroad, giving birth to the "surf-and-travel" culture which prizes finding "uncrowded surf", meeting new people, and riding the perfect wave. It also introduced the sport which had become popular outside of Hawaii and the Polynesian Islands in places like California and Australia, to a broader audience. In addition, it set the style for later surf-and-travel movies, including Momentum, (These Are) Better Days, and Thicker Than Water.

In 2002, The Endless Summer was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

SLSA Official Election Results

The Second Life Surfing Association (SLSA) has announced the official results of the September 1, 2010, Director election.  Abel Halderman and Kantbe Thursday, the only two candidates for two open Director seats, each received 9 votes.  They join Syx Toshi, Harbor Piers and Countess Decosta and fill the posts completed by Colleen Brennan and Bobbi Laval.  Halderman and Thursday's posts will run for 6 months, until March 1, 2011.  Toshi, Piers and Decosta seats will be up for election on December 1, 2010.  The SLSA staggers the election process to ensure there are some experienced Directors on the Board thru the transitional phases and has processes in place for special elections should a sitting Director be unable to complete their six month term.

Juna/Myst Wedding!

submitted by Marianna Monentes

Arjuna Bombastic and Mystyre Sapphire wed 8/27/10 at 8 PM SLT.  The wedding was held at Tuli Bahari. This turned out to be a spectacular wedding. The bride wore a gown by Son!a which was impeccable. Mystyre simply glowed as seen here in these photos. Juna, too, looked radiant in his tux created by SF Designs. The bridesmaids all wore gowns by Blaze.  The color matched the sea in the background beautifully. This is a wedding to stay in many of the guests' minds for quite some time as it was beautifully arranged.

Tauri's Tidbits and Sticky Situations #2

We were recently having a convo about Second Life (SL) situations and talking about SL etiquette - is there such a thing? You know, the kinds of things you run into in SL and are not sure of the proper way to handle. We'll be periodically posting these dilemmas and looking for genuinely constuctive feedback on your opinion. If you have a comment or a dilemma of your own, let us know and we'll add it to the list!

Dilemma:
How do you tell someone their hair/skin/shape etc. are just not working for them without totally hurting their feelings?  You like him...but that bald spot is distracting.  You like her...but her skin looks like a rubber blow up doll.  We've found this is harder in a relationship situation - easier to tell your buddy that his hair has a big bald spot showing than a potential partner.  Tell us what you think!
