Mari's Mailbag: Forgiveness

submitted by Marianna Monentes

There comes a time when we all must forgive and move on. Holding grudges is not only burdensome but closes doors that were once open to possibilities. I see time and again dramas unfold and feelings hurt. In Second Life (SL) when it occurs, people always quickly defriend and hold anger then spread the gossip. So uncool. It's better to leave the person on your list...give it a few days rest and then perhaps try to resolve differences. Forgiveness is typically defined as the process of concluding resentment, indignation or anger as a result of a perceived offense, difference or mistake, and/or ceasing to demand punishment or restitution. To me, forgiveness is the greatest thing a person can do for another. No amount of money can replace the act of forgiveness. You will find too, that by forgiving, there is a deeper trust that grows between people.  It shows them you are open to mistakes and can gracefully accept them when they fall short in your eyes. Perhaps too, it can be that you were wrong about a situation and not them. Soften your stance in life. Open your arms. Hugs are sometimes needed more than harsh words and resentment.

New Scoreboard Debut!

The Second Life Surfing Association (SLSA) Exotic Island Invitational Surf Challenge event last Saturday debuted a brand new scoreboard with some amazing features.

Scoreboard designer, Abel Halderman, recently explained some of the new features:

As for now, the board is a test version. Currently it displays scoreboards and every 120 seconds, the scoreboards fade out and a sign that Surf Rang asked me to make, "Thank You for your donations!" appears, and a gold sponsor banner appears and moves to the center of the screen, resizes to 10x10 meters, stays there for a moment and disappears.

There is also a warning option that event coordinator may use in case someone touches the wave. The screen turns red and a sign appears reading, "Please don't touch the waves".

I see lots of possible features for the screen. It could play much more complex animations - real commercials. It could give warnings "Heat 3, get ready". It could show which heat we are on. It could finally load heat scores from a notecard instead of a texture which would save a lot of work for an event coordinator or a scoreboard person.

It could also be connected to the judges' equipment which would automatically update the scoreboards. I can think of many many possible features. You name it, it's probably possible. It's easy it work with. Most of the things can be done using a blue menu.

It could be used by the SLSA as in the most recent competition.  Also by Tsunami Beach.  If anyone else is interested in using it, feel free to contact me.

Kantbe Serious - All in The Family

submitted by Kantbe Thursday

Hey, Ya'll… ya know how sometimes you happen along to sum'n that just warms your heart (no, not that…Q! Get your mind out of the gutter)? I was lucky enough to have one of those experiences when I was doing my daily thing of hang'n around at Archipelago and greeting people.

I was minding my own business, just standing there (apparently right on the Landing Point) when not one, not two, but four people suddenly landed on my head. Luckily, I'm pretty invulnerable to head wounds, even when not wearing Colleen's surfing helmet hair. It turns out I was about to experience a really fun family outing of Lumia Teardrop, her husband Ilvllo Fizzle, and their two girls, Violet Steamweaver and littleapples Lemon.

Lumia and Ilvllo met about 8 months ago and are now together in SL and RL. They decided they wanted a family, so little Violet and recently, littleapples came into their lives. They try to get out as a family two to three times a week. They saw Archipelago listed in the SL Destinations and thought surfing sounded like fun.

After helping them get started on a couple of the loaner boards that are there, I watched for a bit. It was an absolute hoot and they were having a great time… laughing, yelling, teasing each other.. a trip for me and lots of fun for them. Poor little Violet was having some vertigo issues on the board, tho, so I rezzed one for her and set it so it wasn't on tube view anymore. She loved it!

I gave Mom and Dad my surf sim list, pointed out a couple of PG surfing sims (which Mom appreciated for the girls), left them with one of my boards for Violet, and headed out, leaving them to their outing.

I got an IM from Violet later. They had a great time and want to do that some more surfing. Since Violet has a bit of tummy trouble, as she put it, she had picked up a surfboard already so she could have one to use without tube view…. she picked one with a flower on it, I'm told…

It was a great experience for me, and goes to show how rewarding it can be to help out people who are new to surfing and want to give it a shot. We can be serious about our surfing and have a lot of fun… just don't be too serious ;-)

Tauri's Tidbits and Sticky Situations

We were recently having a convo about Second Life (SL) situations and talking about SL etiquette - is there such a thing? You know, the kinds of things you run into in SL and are not sure of the proper way to handle. We'll be periodically posting these dilemmas and looking for genuinely constuctive feedback on your opinion. If you have a comment or a dilemma of your own, let us know and we'll add it to the list!

Dilemma:
When is it okay to delete someone from your friends list? How about from your picks? Is there a certain period of time you need to honor after they leave SL to remove them without hurting their feelings? Or should you make some kind of announcement to them prior to deleting?  Or should you disregard their feelings because you are dropping them off your list, after all?  Tell us what you think!
