It’s not every day that the Second Life (SL) surfing community hears the news about the release of new mesh surf waves – but Jean Neymar (jeanquille) – owner of the Marina Bay Shop, has just created four new and awesome waves that SL surfers will love.
The waves come in four versions: Tube, Side Curve, Center and Freestyle plus the wave rezzer HUD features some never seen before tools that will make the often-painful task of rezzing your waves ‘just right’ a lot easier!
SurfWatch sat down with Jean just before the the release of the new waves to find out more about them – and what the creative process was like for Jean.
SW: Hi Jean – this is exciting news for the SL surf community. Why did you decide to create new style surfing waves in SL?
JN: I needed a flagship product in my store, and my choice was for waves because I am a surfer myself. I bought waves for my surf sim - Nazamur - from the only existing wave store in Second Life ™ and I found the price extremely expensive. I really wanted to create waves that were more accessible in price for surfers.
SW: What makes your waves unique and different to other waves for sale please Jean?
JN: I don’t think I’m unique or innovative, but my product is up to what already exists already. I will add though, that my waves were made by a surfer and for surfers with love.
SW: So please explain – what types of wave have you created?
JN: I have created four different waves for now – to launch my product. They are called: Tube, Side Curve, Center and Freestyle. In the future there will be other types. I also plan on making some waves 100m wide as soon as I can fix the technical issues involved. I am also open to any ideas for new mesh waves from the surfing community and surfers!
SW: There must be a lot of work involved in creating new mesh waves - what was the creation process for these waves like for you?
JN: At the beginning, I had a lot of enthusiasm and pleasure making them, but then I came up against technical problems. In just 2 months I had to upgrade to 10 years of building evolution… I worked very hard and sometimes cried for the process. On several occasions I did nearly give up, but I was pushed by friends to move on and now these waves are functional. There are very few creators who know how this system works and they keep their secret well, I had to rethink it myself and add a personal touch like transparency at the birth of the wave.
SW: You have done an incredible job making them. I have enjoyed surfing on them. Now, your new waves also have a rezzer HUD that looks amazing – what’s so special about this HUD Jean?
JN: The HUD is made of mesh in the form of a wooden table with surfboards, it is not very useful because once the system is in place it is removed, but it gives a nice presentation of the product and it has amused me to do it! Technically, there is a stop and start system that allows you to stop the waves without removing the rezzer, a test button, 4 texture buttons that allow to change style without changing the rezzer and there are also buttons to adjust the speed of the wave which is very useful for small sim. Finally, a button to adjust the interval time between the waves.
SW: That is great news for surf sim owners. Rezzing surf waves takes time and patience so your HUD will make life a lot easier! So, what would you say to encourage SL surfers and sim owners to try your waves?
JN: These first four wave styles are very adapted to fit the small sim, they are only 64m wide and the system allows to slow the speed. The rate of scrolling of the water texture is proportional to the speed of the wave for more realism and for some models the texture can scroll in two different directions. I also find adjusting the height of other waves onto water boring, so I have developed a system that does that job automatically!
SW: Where can people try out your new waves Jean?
JN: My waves are available on marketplace and in the small surf shop at my beach at Nazamur. I really encourage people to try them before buying on marketplace. The four models are available to demo and there is a C-3 rezzer board on my beach so you can test them in person.
SW: How much will your waves sell for?
JN: The cheapest is 3500Ls and the most expensive is 5200LS. Each wave is delivered with three different channel rezzers. Placing the three simultaneously means that you can send a wave every 20 seconds which is quite enough!
SW: Thanks so much for your time Jean and we wish you all the best at SurfWatch – is there anything you would like to add?
JN: These waves have been the biggest business I’ve ever done on SL, I hope people will like them, the evolution of my work will depend on the feedback I’m given. In any case I am proud to have reached the end because I almost gave up more than once! A big thank you to the surfers who followed and encouraged me, also to those who tested my beta and advice from the pros.
