SLSA Team Ladder Change

The SLSA recently made a change to the competition team ladder.  The SLSA asked SurfWatch to post the following information regarding this change:

We experienced a change in a team ladder. It's not a major change and it doesn't effect the current season team ranking at all, however I was asked to explain it.

Before:
Rank Points

In each competition top 3 of a team riders, being also among the 5 surfers designated by team captain to fight for team points, earned points for the team. Points have been given for a place they took in the final competiton ranking, and then cumulated for those 3 surfers. That way we got a competiton winner, runner up and 3rd placer. League points were what made a winner in the season ranking.

Example:

Team Y
Surfer A finished 3rd = 725 points
Surfer B finished 7th = 475 points
Surfer C finished 11th = 385 points
Total RANK POINTS for the team = 1585 points

Because another team (team Y) got more points, say 1700, they win the competition.

Also one of the other teams (team Z) got 1510 points, so they finished 3rd in the competiton.

So we've got

Team X - 1700 points - first place
Team Y - 1585 points - second place
Team Z - 1510 points - third place

Now, league points

They were given for one of the top 3 places in a competition.

So...

Team X gets 3 points for first place
Team Y gets 2 points for second place
Team Z gets 1 points for third place

Other teams get no score that would effect their ranking at all. In the former format rank points didn't matter as long as it came to a tie in league points. Then they were the decisive factor.

Now:

Because sometimes it happened that say team X had more rank points than team Y, and team Y had more league points than team X, and because the whole system was a bit confusing to surfers, we decided to make it more simple. Rank points only. That means, the best team at the end of a season is the one that got the most rank points, meaning had the most points given to the top 3 team riders in comps (of 5 selected by a team captain).

Therefore, if team X gets 11320 points in a season, and other teams get less than that, team X wins the season.

Why top scoring 3 riders from a team get team points? Or why team captains have to pick 5 riders fighting for team points in each comp? Just becasue there are teams that are smaller than others. We don't add all points from all competing team members just because for some teams it would be 3 riders, for some 8. No way to tell which one is a better team just by looking at a number of surfers competing.

IMPORTANT!!!

Team captains SHOULD send a list of 5 team riders that registered for a competition and are selected to fight for rank points for their teams IF the total number of team riders registered for the comp is above 5. It is very important for the captains to remember that because if they don't do that, their teams won't be ranked. Captains always recieve a reminder from one of the directors or officers to do that before the competiton begins, too.

My only question would be why would you only rank 3 teams if you are going to use a points system as a ranking procedure? You fail to account for other teams, accountability for ones actions in the water accumulates towards a team so let the team come together and achieve team goals among themselves. Team bonding is crucial for the moral and overall ambiance of a team in their teams success is felt through it's contributors.

The SLSA does not only rank three teams. Please read Mr. Halderman's statement again Clarke. We rank the top three SURFERS out of five chosen by the team captain. This not only gives individual surfers a goal to strive for but the team as well. Due to difference in team sizes it would be unrealistic and unfair to rank all riders on each team when coming to a mathematical decision on who is the highest ranked team. This particular system has been successful and fair for as long as I have been involved with the SLSA. The changes made were simply simplify the formula so that the teams can better understand how a decision is reached.
