People have been scaring each other on purpose for a while—ghost stories are part of many oral traditions
From a psychological point of view, the standard features of haunted houses trigger feelings of dread because they push buttons in our brains that evolved long before houses even existed. These alarm buttons warn us of potential danger and motivate us to proceed with caution.
Haunted houses give us the creeps not because they pose a clear threat to us, but rather because it is unclear whether or not they represent a threat.
This ambivalence leaves you frozen in place, wallowing in unease.
Thus, we evolved to err on the side of detecting threats in ambiguous situations. Things that activate hypervigilance for malevolent supernatural (or natural) agents abound in large, drafty old houses: rattling or creaking sounds in upstairs rooms; the sighing and moaning of wind passing through cracks; ragged curtains fluttering in the breeze; echoes; and cold spots.
Such feelings of discomfort are symptomatic of the fact that we are constantly – even if unconsciously – scanning our surroundings and assessing our ability to flee if it should become necessary.
Also, the darkness and confusing layout of the house may cause us to get lost; at the very least, it would slow us down.
Individuals like myself, who believe in paranormal phenomena and have expectations that creepy things might actually be present in such a place are more likely to engage in the sort of top-down, cognitive processing that induces fear.
For these people, otherwise innocuous but uncertain surroundings can become a chilling experience.

I have visited the 80+ SIMS listed in the 2018 “SL’s Top Haunted Places Tour & Hunt”!
Below are my favorite Haunted Places in Second Life:
"The Forgotten"
Simply the best Halloween SIM in SL!
First ever interactive haunt on SL...Not for faint of heart.
Very Popular Halloween Attraction, unfortunately very laggy due to the number of Avatars on this scary SIM
Best to go after 6:30 pm when the live monsters arrive to chase & scare the shit out of you
I recommend traveling in packs, so when the Live Monsters attack, run as fast as you can, and let the Monsters grab the stragglers.
OMG there is a Sharknato!
Run fast before the Huge Live Sharks Eat You!
When Mick Lunasea & I returned to the beach after being chased for couple of hours at “The Forgotten”, we just sat decompressing from our experience.
Finally, Mick spoke, “The was scary fun”
Enough said.
"The Hum and the Shiver"
This place is awesome!
It's obvious that a lot of love went into building this cool addition to the grid.
What make this place is great is that there are two SIMS to explore
The first SIM is your traditional Halloween SIM. A lonely house by the sea where fairy lights dance and smoky spirits weep. This is the Hum and the Shiver, a sanctuary for the dead.
The second SIM is magical. Fairies, unicorns & elves.
Lots of couple animations.
Perfect SIM for a Halloween date night.
"Sunset Boulevard"
You arrive in 1950 at the premier of Billy Wilder’s magnum opus Sunset Boulevard. starring Gloria Swanson and William Holden.
Walk into the cinema, as you take your seat to enjoy this fine film you get swept away and swear you are part of it.......
Then a scary fall into an Apocalyptic version of Sunset boulevard
Very creative entrance
The Haunted House is amazing with the best furniture animation I has seen in SL
"Why just watch a movie when you can be in it?"
"Final Refuge Adult Halloween Horror"
Very popular Halloween attraction, yet I did not experience any lag.
Gothic sexy fun Halloween horror experience in a large castle with an extensive cave system.
Bring your friends along for moral support as you scream your way through this SL Top Haunt enjoying anything you find here.
Adult role play is very welcome, and Final Refuge includes numerous RLV traps and transformation devices for an immersive experience.
[Final Refuge Horror Haunt_Hanging to death]
Rumors had circulated for years about the castle outside of Audionville. It is said that many horrors have taken place there, and possibly still are. Stories of ritualistic sex, torture, murder and even cannibalism are all associated with this dark place.
The stories also consistently speak of incredible treasure hidden somewhere on the grounds. While many have sought it, it has never been found and the seekers have all come back scarred from the experience, IF they were ever seen again at all. But the locals are certain that the riches do exist. Saying "...oh it's there alright, but you have to go through Hell to get it."
[Final Refuge Horror Haunt_Creepy Cave]
In spite of its dark mysterious past, people still come to Final Refuge. Perhaps they seek its treasure.
Perhaps they too hold the dark desires that the place embodies.
Will you be next?
Honorable Mention
“Haunted Castle Hunt on Creations Park"
A delightful spooky haunted castle where else can you donate to such a wonderful cause (Michael J Fox Foundation).
Explore this haunted castle from the cemetery in the basement to the alchemist lab and astronomy towers.
You can even ride a fire breathing dragon
"What Goes Bump In The Night"
Super Scary Monsters jumping out at you all over the place
Lots of unique interactive animations & animated creatures
An excellent Haunted Castle!
Haunted House, Clowns, Skeletons, Snakes, Demons, and so much more.
