BREAKING NEWS RE: SL OUTAGES

Posted by April Linden regarding the current Second Life outages:
https://community.secondlife.com/blogs/entry/2312-unscheduled-ddos/

The grid is currently undergoing a large DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. Second Life being hit with a DDoS attack is pretty routine. It happens quite a bit, and we’re good at handling it without a large number of Residents noticing. However, the current DDoS attacks are at a level that we rarely see, and are impacting the entire grid at once.
My team (the Second Life Operations Team) is working as hard as we can to mitigate these attacks. We’ve had people working round-the-clock since they started, and will continue to do so until they settle down. (I had a very late night, myself!)
Second Life is not the only Internet service that’s been targeted today. My sister and brother opsen at other companies across the country are fighting the same battle we are. It’s been a rough few days on much of the Internet.
We’re really sorry that access to Second Life has been so sporadic over the last day. Trying to combat these attacks has the full attention of my team, and we’re working as hard as we can on it. We’ll keep posting on the Second Life Status Blog as we have new updates.

SurfWatch Now on Flickr

With all of the other great Flickr groups that include great shots of Second Life activities outdoors and involving surfing in SL, you might wonder why we'd create yet another Flickr group.

Our hope at SurfWatch is that Flickr will have a natural synergy with the goals SurfWatch has in its blog, in other social media, and inworld in Second Life to help spread the word about things of interest to people who enjoy surfing and beaches in Second Life.

If you share our enjoyment and interest in these activities, let's hear what you like to do. Share your pictures with us as well.

Since SurfWatch is intended for all ages, this Flickr group will only support "Safe" rated pictures and videos. If possible, we'd also like to see the SL location (SURL) where pictures are taken when showing a public spot. To begin with, we'll moderate posts until we get a feel for what is being posted. We'll strive to get your posts published as quickly as possible. Hopefully, we'll find that moderation really won't be necessary.

We hope this will be something fun for everyone and hope you'll follow us on Flickr and the SurfWatch blog.

Meet Your Candidates: Gia Villano

Submitted from SLSA Director candidate application:

I Gia Villano  would like to run for the open director position within the SLSA.  I am willing to serve the full term. I was previously the Co Captain of Reef Riders and now a current surfer for Tai Chi surf team.

I have been a member of the SLSA since 2009 and  previously served 6 terms as a director. I believe that I  can be an asset to the current board.  I have been a part of this organization since 2009 and it has become my passion to serve and help the growth of surfing in SL. My past goals as a SLSA director was to find new sponsors, setup surf events, as well as vote on numerous proposals to help further the growth of the SLSA.  One area that I would like to continue to improve is growing our pool of Judges.

My hopes going forward would still be the same.  To find new and innovative ways to grow our great organization.  I love working with everyone and look have a great work ethic to bring to the table.

Meet Your Candidates: Richie Marley

Submitted from the SLSA Director candidate application:

Richie Marley Profile Picture
-Name: richiemarley resident.

-I am able and willing to serve my full 6 month term (sometimes I can get a bit busy for some days because of my rl job).

-No team affiliations.

-No product or sim ownership (I make shapes and sell them but nothing to do with surfing).

-About my background I have been surfing for couple of months in sl, however I had practiced a long time ago. I love the surfing experience in sl because I feel like it fills those days when i can't surf in rl, plus the community around is really nice and I guess those are the main aspects that bring me into surfing here: the passion for surf and people.
I work as marketer and event manager in rl and I also have experience with social networks as a channel of communication.
In sl, together with my best friend, we used to run some parties with dj's in our old club.

-My vision to SLSA is helping giving the best virtual surfing experience to the surf community already existing in sl and to new people who wanna try this sport. Basically is helping doing the work done so far and the one to be done, always with the goal of development.
Helping manage and prepare the comps, making events, getting people inspired and motivated, developing the promotion near social networks, and so on.

Thank you!

I also bought the slippery rose lipstick.
Also by LIQUID are my "Profound Eyes - Liquid Breath" - Appliers.

The Sun Goes Down, The Stars Come Out

The Sun Goes Down, The Stars Come Out

When the sun dips behind the horizon after a hard day out surfing - the party continues onshore under the moonlight at Surfer’s Bay. Known for its hedonistic vibe, the sim hosts regular DJ slots throughout the week to cater for its group members across all time zones, but Surfer’s Bay has also started to attract a large non-surfing crowd thanks to the introduction of some special events…

--> Strokerz Girlz In the past few weeks, the sim has run a popular photo competition, hosted a fun bachelorette party and it also recently welcomed the famed ‘Strokerz Girlz’: a fun and vivacious dance group that represent Strokerz Toyz and Stroker Serpentine - a legendary adult content creator that some call the "Grandfather of Sex" in Second Life.

Surfer’s Bay was packed for three hours with over 60 visitors all enjoying the party atmosphere, joking in local chat and delighting in their free sexy swag kindly donated by Stroker Serpentine. One lucky winner even walked away with a raffle prize worth over L$5,000. It was a memorable and exciting event for everyone that was part of it, and a great opportunity for surfers and non-surfers alike to meet and mingle on the dance floor.
Jori Jewell Bay Girl

Events such as these at Surfer’s Bay help to attract the attention of non-surfers, which leads to new visitors, new donations and by default – new group members. If any community (including SL surfing) is to survive and thrive, then fresh faces and new ways of thinking and working should be welcomed. In turn, more people take up SL surfing: I have personally tutored 20 people at Surfer’s Bay in the past two months alone how to ride a C-3 and all are now addicted to the sport and happily buying and customising their own surfboards.

“Surfer’s Bay always has – and always will – place surfing right at the heart of its activities. The sim was constructed with surfing and beach fun in mind,” says Duncan Blackburn, the owner of Surfer’s Bay, “but by actively reaching out to other SL residents and engaging them in everything that we do here, we have managed to grow our paid group membership to over 4,000 people.”

This inclusive approach makes sound business sense. As any of us that have been part of the SL surfing community for a while will know, surf sims are very much a labour of love for their owners. Behind the sandy beaches, the swaying palms and meticulously rezzed waves are many real-life hours spent creating and maintaining the sim – plus cold, hard, RL cash, so diversifying your activities and attracting new communities and individuals from outside the surfing scene is well worth it.

“We have got a lot of plans for Surfer’s Bay in 2018,” Duncan continues, “and many of those plans have been directly inspired by listening to our members and being proactive in responding to their ideas. From having a greater online presence outside of SL to installing new facilities on the sim for our members and hosting more surf and non-surf related events, my hopes for this year are that we continue to expand and therefore introduce more SL residents to the joys of hitting the SL waves.”

Surfer’s Bay: Top Tips For Diversifying Activities

*Listen to local chat – spend time hanging out with your visitors and ask them how they feel about the sim and what they would like to see take place there.

*Promote your events well – let people know via your Facebook, Flickr and group chat about upcoming events a week in advance. Also let them know if the events will be attended by non group members out of courtesy.

*The power of the image - got a sim related Flickr group? Then post regularly and encourage your visitors to do the same. Try running a photo contests with a season twist for fun.

*Timezones – create opportunities for visitors across the world to feel part of what’s going on by hosting events at different times and by providing a touch of ‘nightlife’ no matter what time SLT!

*Photos – create photogenic spots across your sim to encourage SL photographers and politely ask that they include your SLurl in all uploads to encourage new visitors.

*Advocates – can your visitors be your sim ambassadors too and let other know about events via word of mouth? At Surfer’s Bay, a new ‘Bay Girl’ is voted in each month based on how well she mixes with others and her time spent on the sim. They win special clothing and a cash prize as their reward.

Adventure of Dust

Submitted by Dillan Munro

Adventure of Dust
Well here is something new: a surfing hangout with plenty of little sidelights. I won't spoil all the little secret hideaways here, but suffice to say that one can spend a lot of time exploring and finding things other than surfing to do. I will lay down a couple of challenges: find the high dive at the top of an ancient ruin which looks like it was built by the Mayans, and also find the cave that satisfies those with BDSM tendencies.

The bay with the surfing waves is very pretty, with nice shape to the surf and a pretty long ride. There are boards to rent for free if you left yours at home, and a smattering of lounges and towels around the beach provide plenty of spots for those who like to sit and people watch.

There are events on a daily basis at the dance floor, and the owner appears to be quite involved with the everyday happenings.

The site is rated adult, so one can wear as little as they want. There are plenty of places for lovers to escape and find some privacy; make sure to sneak behind the rocks and find the tents.

There are 4 sims connected here, but be careful to avoid the ban lines around a few of the private residences.

This is a great place to kill several hours just wandering around alone or with a friend !
