Surfers Bay VIP September Baygirl Lesley Wroth

Baygirl information provided by Duncan Blackburn

September Baygirl:  Lesley Wroth

SurfWatch reporter, Dillan Munro, recently caught up with Surfer's Bay VIP September Baygirl, Lesley Wroth, and shares a little about her with our readers. SurfWatch will be sharing Surfers Bay VIP Baygirl each month culminating in Surfers Bay VIP Baygirl of the Year!

Dillan Munro (DM): Tell me a bit about your Second Life (SL); how you came to get close to the beach, etc.
áƒ¦..â„’â„°Sâ„’â„°y ωrσtħ..ღ (LW): Well, over my many years here on SL, I have done many things like owned clubs, been a part of bloodlines, modeled, done photography, written in blogs, been a magazine photographer for a few magazines, and I decided it was time to relax and enjoy SL.  So I found my way to Surfers Bay where I have been a member. A couple years ago I met some amazing people, learned how to surf and take a spill gracefully (laughs), and I enjoy my time relaxing on the beach with my husband (Cadeon Wroth).

DM: Did you two meet there?
LW: Yes and no.  We had noticed each other there a few times which I discovered after we began to talk, but we have spent a good bit of time together there. We love it!  And Duncan (Blackburn) is so sweet and has always been kind and accepting of me even as an elf. I have been told by other beaches that I was not allowed there because of my ears.

DM: So you surf?
LW: A bit, but I'm nowhere near as good as some of my friends such as Johnny Whadd.

DM: Where is your favorite beach ?
LW: Definitely Surfers Bay because there is a bit of everything there, and it has always had the friendliest people too.

DM:  (Nods) Do you watch the surfing competitions?
LW: I have not had the chance.  Work gets in the way a lot, but I would love to since I live at the beach in real life (RL) and love watching them.

DM: Do you live near the beach in SL ?
LW: I do! I'm on Linden waters so I can boat and jet ski.
DM:  Thanks so much for talking to SurfWatch, and congratulations again for winning the September Baygirl!  Best wishes in your life here !

WHAT MAKES A BAYGIRL?

We don’t choose Baygirls on how they look but we choose them on how they interact with others and help promote the Surfer’s Bay sim and group.

We look at the visitor logs for the island and look at the 3 ladies with the highest visitation numbers. We then pick one of those ladies based on how she supports Surfer’s Bay and if she has Surfer’s bay in her profile PICKS.

We also select winners based on how they talk to others and how much they help new members.

We want our Baygirls to be proud ambassadors for the sim and our community and are honored to have them represent us!

We are very proud of all of our previous and existing Baygirls and look forward to our future Baygirls.

Each winner is only eligible to win one monthly contest per year.

After 12 months of winners we will vote between all the monthly Baygirl winners for the Baygirl of the year award.

SurfWatch Partner: One Love

Information provided by JT Castanea

SurfWatch is proud to introduce our new partnerships display on our web page view in the sidebar.  We'll be featuring photos, events, people, shops at these beautiful locations or in these groups to share them with our readers and grow our communities.  If you are interested in becoming a SurfWatch Partner, contact Tauri Tigerpaw in-world or Tauri T-paw on Facebook.

SurfWatch Partner:  One Love

The group Soul Wave was created by JT Castanea in 2008 for the purpose of making a movie about surfing in Second Life (SL). JT states, "I'd seen some videos on surfing and thought I'd like to try something like that.   Thor Bishop, Mick Lunasea and Robin Mapp were on board but the players kept changing due to real life comings and goings...R.I.P. Brother Thor."

He explains, "It was difficult to get folks together at the same time to do a project of that magnitude so the "movie" was scrapped and the group now is for members wishing to rez on the sim One Love Beach.  In it's current state, OLB is a surf sim created after the love of the Islands and the ocean.  It's been around in different machinations for about 7 years, but always a surf sim."

"The movie and the group was about all of us, our stories and our love for surfing RL that we wanted to try and project in here", he elaborates.  "Soul Wave was fun even if it never came to fruition...it's still about a culture, a way of life and the bonds that are made and the almost spiritual nature of surfing and that being our "church" in RL."

"When time, space and your full attention is focused on something so beautiful as a perfectly breaking wave there is a union of body and nature that can only be equaled to or explained as a spiritual experience."

JT concluded, "It is an absolute feeling of union  ...  that generates a path and a lifestyle which resonates and blends into the mystical system of our planet and our bodies.  We carry these as constants...as our hearts pump our life's blood and waves pound on the shores."

SurfWatch Partner: Playa Perdida

Information provided by Austin Novaland

SurfWatch is proud to introduce our new partnerships display on our web page view in the sidebar.  We'll be featuring photos, events, people, shops at these beautiful locations or in these groups to share them with our readers and grow our communities.  If you are interested in becoming a SurfWatch Partner, contact Tauri Tigerpaw in-world or Tauri T-paw on Facebook.

SurfWatch Partner:  Playa Perdida

Started by Austin Novaland, the original build of Playa Perdida opened in April, 2016, on the region of Lost Cove.  The sim has been in the current location since February 2017.  Austin states, "The desire to create has always been part of me in both lives.  It's amazing what people are able to do in Second Life (SL).  It is inspiring.  I was living at El Diablo at the time, so my SL had taken a full surf bum turn.  It was about that time that one of my favorite escapes, Mango Island, was closed, leaving a void in my places to just be.  I had done some nice little residential spaces on various parcels over the years, but always wanted to do an entire region.  All of these factors aligned at the right time, and the result was Surf Cove at Playa Perdida."

Austin explains, "Surf Cove at Playa Perdida is not the most social sim.  There are no events to attract the masses, or rentals for those who want to live here.  Adult activities are allowed, but prowling is not.  The surfing experience is prioritized, and that will always be the case.  it is scenic, but there are other sims as beautiful or more so.  There is little to no lag most of the time, but a few sims are probably better in that regard.  Still, the vibe here is unique.  For those who crave a place to catch some tasty waves with challenging set ups, to explore a little bit, to listen to some nice varied music streams with zero commercials, or to just be, it's as good as it gets.  It is rarely crowded, and ideally, it will stay that way."

For more background on Surf Cove at Playa Perdida, see SurfWatch http://surfwatch.blogspot.com/2018/09/surfwatch-partner-playa-perdida.html and http://surfwatch.blogspot.com/2017/03/surf-cove-playa-perdida.html.  You can use the links in the sidebar to find the landmark and to check out their Flickr group with some amazing photos!

Flow Board Update

With the new Flow PS2 surfboard now available at the Man Cave event, several have been asking if this is the new Flow Pro board they've been hearing about. Surfwatch reached out to Brady McKeenan to find out.

Brady clarified that the PS2 is not the "pro" board. He said the "pro" is more radical and has more maneuvers including aerials.  The Flow boards are being done in partnership with V-Surf and they do have a schedule for what they're doing with their products. They have completed their schedule for the Funboard and the PS2. Upcoming plans include the "Pro" and a Longboard.

Due to the complexity of these new boards, they are still in the testing stages and have no fixed availability dates at this time.

#Metoo in the Virtual World - Follow Up

#METOO

A few weeks back SurfWatch put out a request to hear from women and men about their experience and perception of sexual harassment and assault in the virtual world.  This is not a scientific study but a way to create a dialog and have a discussion.  Our questions were:

What is the difference between sexual harassment, annoyance or assault in the virtual world as opposed to the real world?  When does it cross the line in a virtual world?  In RL (real life), a person in a position of authority or power trying to force a sexual act on another would clearly be sexual harassment.  But in a virtual world, does anyone hold a real position of authority or power over another, enough to constitute sexual harassment, the same as in RL?  In a virtual world, why wouldn't you TP (teleport) away, block or mute that person?  Does claiming sexual harassment or assault in SL belittle the ones in RL that have experienced it?

Is anyone in a virtual world really in a position to intimidate or use retribution against someone as an element of sexual harassment?  Could this "behavior actually negatively impact someone's desires to be a significant contributor for the community by turning people against them, or impact someone's efforts to financially support something they're doing with a sim or business" as Kantbe Thursday so eloquently put it?  For example, SL (Second Life) does have some RL ramifications for some people in terms of business, sporting events, followings, etc.

It's difficult to get people to open up about this topic.  Originally several people hearing we were covering this topic contacted SurfWatch claiming to have been harassed and/or assaulted.  They later stated they did not want to discuss the details or be identified by giving too much information.  They were uncomfortable coming forward. They used a third party to pass anonymous information to us. Some of the reasons we were given:  not wanting to make a big deal about it, the offender apologized or claimed they were inebriated or incapacitated and unaware of what they were doing; not wanting to be identified and retaliated against; afraid to be made fun of.

The dictionary defines sexual harassment as:

"Harassment (typically of a woman) in a workplace, or other professional or social situation, involving the making of unwanted sexual advances or obscene remarks."

According to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission [for employment purposes]:

"It is unlawful to harass a person (an applicant or employee) because of that person's sex.  Harassment can include "sexual harassment" or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature.  Harassment does not have to be of a sexual nature, however, and can include offensive remarks about a person's sex.  For example, it is illegal to harass a woman by making offensive comments about women in general.

Both victim and the harasser can be either a woman or a man, and the victim and harasser can be the same sex.

Although the law doesn't prohibit simple teasing, offhand comments, or isolated incidents that are not very serious, harassment is illegal when it is so frequent or severe that it creates a hostile or offensive work environment or when it results in an adverse employment decision (as as the victim being fired or demoted).

The harasser can be the victim's supervisor, a supervisor in another area, a co-worker, or someone who is not an employee of the employer, such as a client or customer."

One respondent to SurfWatch who requested anonymity shared her experience:

This is an embarrassing topic for me.  I came from another virtual world into Second Life 3 years ago on Labor Day.  I studied, watched videos, used the marketplace and planned my entry into this new virtual world.  On my Rezz day, I purchase a mesh body, AO, hair, 10 ouitfits, and even got my Linden home.  I struggled rezzing a box, learning my new mesh body and AO, but I still I eventually figured it out.

The first thing I wanted to do was “Ball Room Dance”.  I visited one of the Ball Room Dance looking for a partner.  Eventually, I guy asked me to dance.  Since I am an immersive player, even Ball Room Dancing in the virtual world is very sensual.  After a while, the man asked me to see his home.  I followed him since I was excited to see a real SL virtual home.  The whole pose ball thing was new to me and after 5 minutes, he was having sex with me on his coach.  I was so confused, not knowing how to stop, I simply logged out of Second Life

A few days later I got up my strength to return to Second Life.  I was determined to learn as much as I could about this new virtual technology before I go back out into the wilds of SL.  I attended the class on “Avatar Safety” at Oxbridge University.  I was so in awe of how Professor Kidd protected herself against potential griefers.

Anonymous

Per TheGuardian.com:
“If you highly identify with your avatar and are portraying yourself in an authentic manner, you’re going to feel violated,” said Jesse Fox, an Ohio State University professor who researches the social implications of virtual worlds. “It wouldn’t be different if someone sent you a harassing email to your work email or harassed you in a chat room.”
But Fox warns that virtual reality opens the door to a new level of violation.
“What’s different about virtual environments is an extra layer of immersion. If you are being groped in the real world versus a virtual world, the visual stimuli do not differ,” she said. “You are seeing it. It is appearing to happen to your own body. Those layers of lifelike experience are going to be more traumatizing in that moment.”(1)
SurfWatch had an opportunity recently to speak with Professor Lindal Kidd, Dean of Information, Caledon Oxbridge University.  She's considered an in-world expert on this topic and conducts a class on Saturdays at 10 AM SLT on Avatar Safety at Caledon Oxbridge University.

SurfWatch (SW): Just briefly, I'm doing a piece on whether #metoo applies to virtual reality.  Several women here have told me they felt sexually harassed and some felt they were assaulted. But is that relevant when you can block and teleport and mute?
Lindal Kidd (LK): The thing is, when you're assaulted, especially when you are new, you might not remember those options.  One time, I was new, and standing on a pose stand in public, adjusting my jewelry.  Some ugly creature jumped on my back and started humping me, and whispering obscene comments.  I was...well, terrified.  Didn't know what to do.  Eventually I remembered to log off. but I shook for about half an hour afterwards.  These days, I can step back from being "immersed" and either laugh at such idiots, or go elsewhere.  Some griefers bother people long-term.  They are harder to deal with.  Ban one, and he creates an alt and comes back.  That's more mental harassment than sexual, but it can ruin your SL.

SW:  I have as an example of whether "sexual assault" can be said to exist in SL, a large group where there have been anonymous accusations by more than 1 person of assault by a person in a position of authority.  It was debated that it does not qualify as sexual harassment because there is no real authority in SL.  What are your thoughts?
LK:  The authority in SL is Linden Lab.  They will take action, but only if the Terms of Service, the Community Standards or other LL policies are violated.  They stay out of disputes between residents unless those policies are violated.  So any abuse reports should clearly demonstrate that.  Coming forward via an Abuse report is safe, though.  LL will not tell them who reported them.

SW:  There are also groups with authority - group organizations where the leadership has some authority.
LK:  Only within the group.  A group owner can kick you out of the group but that is about it.

SW:  Yes, but some of the members in these groups are afraid of that, of being kicked out of the group for coming forward.  So is that legitimate sexual harassment?
LK:  Can you give me an example of such a group?  I'd like to understand what it is that people would see as being so important to retain membership in a group where they are made to feel uncomfortable.

SW:  For example, let's say an organization that competes for scores and rankings.
LK:  I see.

SW:  If there were a person in a position of authority making unwanted sexual advances that could impact their membership; maybe scores and rankings.
LK:  (nods).  Is there an alternative group they could join?

SW:  No.
LK:  Seems the alternatives are stay and put up with it, stay but AR the abuser, leave and give up that activity, or leave and form a competing group.

SW:  Yes.  So claims of sexual harassment in this case, even virtual, are valid?
LK:  (nods).

SW: So you think that there are legitimate cases of sexual harassment in virtuality?
LK: Yes, I do.  And also, virtual worlds can be used to help people with such problems in RL.  One of my friends used to run a center in SL to educate women about abuse and what to do about it.

SW: Thank you so much for clarifying this topic.  Much appreciated!
LK: My pleasure.

According to Revealnews.org, "When virtual reality feels real, so does the sexual harassment...One of the earliest instances of avatar defilement is detailed in Julian Dibbell’s 1993 Village Voice article “A Rape in Cyberspace.” Occurring in “LambdaMOO,” a virtual community founded in 1990, a user called Mr. Bungle used the voodoo doll [A voodoo doll program is simply one that allows one user to take control of another user’s character or program] he obtained to commit virtual rapes of female characters. A decade later, reports of avatar rapes began surfacing after Linden Lab’s virtual world “Second Life” launched in 2003."(2)

"In 2007, the Belgian Federal Police announced that they would be investigating a ‘virtual rape’ incident that took place in Second Life back in 2003."(3)

smh.com states, "Sexual assault in virtual reality is real, and it needs to be taken seriously."(4)

One victim of virtual abuse who came forward on her Facebook page and talked about the incident she experienced in a virtual game suffered, "heaping imprecations, slander, and abuse against [the victim]."(5)

However, in a positive way, virtual worlds can be used to create empathy by giving the harasser the opportunity to experience what the victim is experiencing.  VR programs are being used to put the harasser in the position of victim.  "To be able to even remotely understand, tackle, and spread awareness of such an issue it is necessary to step into a victim’s shoes."(6)

It's a serious topic that will increasingly surface as technology delivers us into more worlds dealing with anonymous "others".  SurfWatch is interested in your experiences or opinions.  You can contact us by commenting here with your identifying information or you can contact Tauri Tigerpaw in-world.

You can find Professor Kidd Saturdays at 10 AM SLT teaching Avatar Safety at Caledon Oxbridge University:  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Caledon%20Oxbridge/76/141/29.

SurfWatch is always willing to explore this topic with others and will always provide a safe, confidential environment for others to express themselves on issues of harassment and abuse.

SurfWatch Partner:  Vibrations Surf Alliance (VSA)

Started in 2008 by founder and long-time surfer, VW Sands, on the white sandy beaches of Majini, VSA was the origin of the Vibes Surf Team, home team of many in the pro circuit at the time, and of Surf Jam, a totally fun, chill surfing competition followed by beer, tequila and a party on the deck!  Surfari, a tour of mystery surfing locations the group hits up to catch a wave, just had a recent surf tour [see http://surfwatch.blogspot.com/2018/08/vibrations-surfari.html] with more in the works!

For more background on VW Sands and the Vibrations Surf Alliance, and to get a heads up on Surf Jam #21, use the SurfWatch sidebar and also use VSA, Surf Jam, Surfari. If you want to join the VSA, hit up VW Sands or his partner, Meka Chaffee in-world!

Have HUD, Will Travel

Submitted by Austin Novaland

This is a follow-up to Kantbe Thursday’s very informative article, SurfWatch Wave Report Updated.  It was originally going to be a guide on how to customize the awesome Surfsim Teleporter board that Denise Foxtrot built and that Kantbe tirelessly updates every month, but fate, as it often does, intervened.

I have some gorgeous waves right outside the beach shack that I call my SL home, but I still enjoy visiting other sims, riding different waves, and basically exploring the SL surfing community in its entirety.  The Surfsim Teleporter boards make this an easier task, but not every sim has one, and they are sometimes difficult to find even when present.  I usually keep a copy of the Surfsim notecard in my inventory, but if you are like me, you may have trouble remembering the name, or finding the most recent of the dozen or so that you have collected over time.  I could wear my Surfsim Teleporter board, but the wood gives me splinters, and the bulkiness can interfere with my social agenda.

While taking a short break from working on the article, I was standing on the edge of my toilet hanging a clock, the porcelain was wet, I slipped, hit my head on the sink, and when I came to I had a revelation!  A vision!  Unfortunately, it was not the key to turning a DeLorean into a time machine, but it was something only slightly less useful.  Behold the Surfsim Teleporter HUD!  Portable.  Practical.  And darn cute.  Because it checks for updates anytime it is attached (or when you log in if you are already wearing it), the latest and most complete list of surfing sims available will always be a mere mouse click away.  When minimized, and assuming the default attachment point and location have not been changed, the HUD sits unobtrusively tucked away on the bottom of the screen.  When clicked you see the fully functional HUD, ready to help you find and travel to your next destination.  The memory conscious among you may want to remove it when surfing, but at 192KB, it’s not likely to be the camel on your screen, his back, or even the straw that breaks it.

You can get your own copy in the landing area at Surf Cove at Playa Perdida,  Bluff Cove, or by sending an IM to Kantbe Thursday or Austin Novaland.   Safe travels!

[Editor's Note: The question mark on the expanded HUD provides the lastest copy of the simlist notecard]

Life's a Beach

When I first learned to surf in Real Life (RL), I was in high school and had just moved to a coast community in Southern California.  I missed more class spending time with my new friends at the beach.  I had a crush on every surfer boy and surfer girl - curled sun bleached hair with that salty smell, tanned or freckled skin sometimes with a blob of zinc on the nose, and the ever present, "it's all good", passing a joint around the fire pit after a full day in the curl or on the sand.

Rell Sunn
A boy I liked had a long board - no, not a euphemism, an actual long board - that seemed gigantic to me at the time.  He took me out and showed me the fine points of finding that right angle and moment for momentum, and I spent most of that first few weeks of summer on my knees on the board, working up the balance and nerve to stand.  When he left the area to further his educational pursuits, he left me his long board.

That next summer and every one after, surrounded by short boards and every other combination of board fin, curve, and length, I faithfully lugged that long board into the waves until I could stand along the spray of a baby wave.  No big mountain water for me - I was thrilled to be standing and riding along the crest of any size wave.  Rell Sunn was my idol.  And after hours in the water, the best times were gathering around the fire with old friends and new friends. I had found my tribe.

Old surfers would occasionally show up on the sand - bearded faces, leathered skin, some kind of board no one had ever seen before.  Without even a trace of interest in the young bucks, they hit the waves in a ballet of movement that always left us in awe, and they couldn't care less. They weren't there for the admiration - they were there to live their life in the spray.  The fact they couldn't care less made us admire them even more.

Landing in Second Life ten years ago, I was naturally drawn to the sand and surf.  I landed on a strip of sand called Majini where the local surfers partied on the deck every day after surfing the waves.  You could almost feel the sun, the sand, the spray.  It was all there - sun bleached hair, tanned skin, surf boards, waves, the beach, the vibe.  Squint your eyes, and you're back in the surf laughing with friends.  Give in to it just a little bit, and you can hear the sea gulls.  It's always been about that.
