#MeToo Virtual Reality?

As defined by Wikipedia, "the Me Too movement is a movement against sexual harassment and assault."  The movement spread rapidly as women shared their experiences of sexual  harassment and assault.  The sheer number of women impacted - 17,700,000 since 1998 per metoomvmt.org - is astounding.

In a virtual world where you can block, mute, teleport and you are represented by an avatar, do these same rules apply?  Is there sexual harassment and assault in a virtual environment?

Oddly enough, my idea to broach this topic came from several men in the virtual surfing community who told me about their friends or girlfriends being harassed and even virtually assaulted.  That raised the question of virtual assault - is this a real thing?  Does it exist in virtual reality? Or is it a misplaced concept in a virtual environment?

SurfWatch is asking the virtual community to share their experiences and opinions.  Let us know, does sexual harassment and assault exist in the virtual world?  Have you experienced it?  Would you be willing to share your story, anonymously or not?  We aren't looking for the names of offenders - we are looking to validate the experiences of female avatars that feel they have experienced virtual sexual harassment and/or virtual assault.  Contact Tauri Tigerpaw at Tauri.Tigerpaw@gmail.com or Tauri Tigerpaw in world and share your story.

SurfWatch will post a follow up and share these responses.

SLSA 2018 Season 1 Champion: Kris Marley

SurfWatch recently had a chance to re-interview Kris Marley, Second Life Surfing Association (SLSA) 2018 Season 1 Champion and current SLSA Director, at Fairhaven’s North Shore in a follow up to his March 2017 SW Interview as SLSA Top 3 to discuss his current achievement and life as an SLSA director.

SurfWatch (SW): So did you have a feeling you would end up as 2018 Season 1 champion based on your surfing all season?  Were you feeling confident?
Kris Marley (KM): I don't know really.  Like, after four seasons, I've learned you can never tell. Sometimes you think you have surfed great but they [the judges] like something better, or somebody surfs better. I'm always pretty confident in my surfing, so I guess I knew I had a chance, but you just never know.  I think after T'ai, like, I just nailed that competition, and the North Shore everything went perfect.  And I started to think it was on this time (laughs).

SW: Back in March 2017 last time we interviewed you as SLSA Top 3 pro surfers, you mentioned your favorite moves were "the higher the better".  Has that changed or is that still your fave?
KM: Definitly still the same (laughs).  I worked hard on the aerial stuff this season on every board, and even when I'm just surfing myself, I just find it the most enjoyable thing to do really.

SW: Now that you're an SLSA director - how many terms has it been?
KM: I never finished my first one.  I chucked it (laughs).  I was too new then and got wrapped up in a bit and all that.  I did, like, five months though, so nearly a full term. I suppose it's effectively my third term I'm going into now.  Will have been a year straight by the end of this one. Definitely the last one (laughs). I think a year is long enough for anyone before handing it to somebody else.  Keeps things fresh.

SW: Has that changed your perspective on SL surfing, being in a director role as opposed to straight pro surfer?
KM: Ermm, I guess it has on some levels.  As far as SLSA goes, it really opens your eyes to the challenges Directors face putting a season together.  I think on surfing in general, not much.  Even when I was just surfing from early on, I wanted to encourage people into it, and felt the SLSA should do more in general in connecting with people and the entire community. I still feel the same on that. Surfing stretches far and wide across SL, but being a Director gives you a great platform to try and bring a lot of it together.  It's really a great thing having the opportunity to meet and deal with so many people from across surfing.

SW: You took the last competition off to take on the judging role.  Why was that?
KM: Staffing competitions is one of the biggest challenges you will face as a Director.  Nothing causes more stress than a night before a competition, you're sweating on finding a third Judge, so it made everyone's life easier. I had won the season the competition before so I could take it off and help out on the staffing of it. I picked the right one because it was wild, crazy competition to surf in and was a blast to watch it and judge.  I'd encourage everyone to train to be a Judge and give it a try.  It's a lot of fun watching people surf and learning a different side of surfing.

SW: What was it like from a judging perspective?  Did you see things differently?  Does it give you a chance to really examine the other pro surfers moves in a way you don't normally?
KM: Definitely.  I've learned so much from just watching people surf.  Since I've started, I've watched A LOT of people surfing (laughs).  You pick up stuff you never thought of, or stuff people are just doing better than you, and opens your eyes on how to improve your own surfing. When you're judging, you're locked in tight on them watching every single thing.  It gives you a different perspective absolutely. I find it really interesting honestly and seeing how different people bring different ideas and styles.  It's very cool.

SW: So our last interview, you mentioned the music that pumps you up to surf.  What are you listening to now almost a year and a half later?
KM: (Laughs)  What was I listening to then? I've got a feeling it will be exactly the same.
SW: (Laughing)  Let me see..."This Girl - Kungs vs Cooking on 3 burners or anything Liberty (Justice) tells you to listen to."
KM:  Aye, the same competition wise anyway (laughs). I tried changing songs and have a bad wave and it gets binned and This Girl goes straight back on (laughs). It just gets me in a nice rhythm.

SW: What about advice to new surfers after all this time and all your new experiences. Last time you said, "learn to turn first."  Any new advice?
KM: Definitely still the same. You have to stay on the wave before you can start enjoying it properly and putting your own style into your surfing. If you surf straight off the other end, you're not gonna enjoy it a whole lot, stay on it (laughs).  Over the last six months, we've had Jus (Strat), Richie (Marley Di Vaio), Moonie (Kismet), Bunni (Kismet), probably others start doing competitions, and they all start learning from the basic thing of staying on the wave. In the past six months we have run into a lot of new surfers.  The SLSA group has taken in about 140 odd new members, and every single person who asks me anything, I will tell them learn to turn and stay on the wave before anything.  Then you really start having fun with your surfing.

SW: Okay, so anything about surfing you'd like to add?  Or being a Director?  Or life in general?
KM: Ach, I don't know.  Just give it a try, ask questions, meet people and have fun, don't be a dick, all that stuff. The last seven months have been awesome, honestly.  I really can't thank Jus, Solsty (Kismet), Cierra (Theriac-Triton), Richie and Gia (Villano-Triton) enough for just being awesome Directors to work with. It makes life so much easier having a great team.  It's been amazing, they have been amazing. We got Surf Camp coming up at the start of August, doing all kinds of lessons from board design, to surf photography, surf lessons, whatever we can think of to throw in that people might want to hang out and learn a few things about. So keep your eyes peeled for it.

SW: What else are you doing these days when you're not surfing and directing?
KM: How much time do you think I have? (laughs)
SW: You live here, right?
KM: I'm gonna live in this office and butter you up with coffees to get you working for me so I got more time for stuff (laughs).  Denise (Foxtrot) who owns Maoli waves, with a couple of other guys, recently brought back simball so I been playing a bit of that.  It's so much fun, I love it.
SW:  Oh that's cool! Have an LM?  It's at her Maoli sim?
KM:  Aye, the arena for it is up in the sky the boards you buy at ground level, can get a free one or more expensive ones.  It's like 3 v 3 games you can have, but can play with 2 or 6. its awesome.

SW:  Thanks, Kris, for your time and congratulations on your season championship!

SurfWatch Mission Statement and Editorial

SurfWatch Mission Statement:  To continue to encourage, develop, support and be a central point for the virtual surf and beach communities; to circulate information about activities and events happening across the spectrum of all virtual world surf and beach organizations and groups; to share in news effecting those surf and beach communities; to keep alive an accurate, documented and searchable history of virtual surfing; to serve as a focal point of communication for businesses, vendors, venues, services, real estate, merchandisers, groups, individuals, etc. to communicate to the rest of the virtual community; to be open to other needs it can provide to the virtual world surf and beach community in expansion, promotion, and outreach of virtual beaches and surfing.

SurfWatch has always been a labor of love.  No one on staff from editors through any other function on staff is paid and, in fact, in many cases such as purchasing sponsorships with other groups or operational costs such as downloading textures or buying  memberships, clothing or surfboards to write about, it comes out of pocket for staff.  In spite of this, SurfWatch has always had people willing to be on staff, meet the deadlines, and deal with the fallout of expressing opinions all in the interests of promoting virtual surfing and that is because it is fun - fun to be working in a team environment with a group that is excited about sharing a goal, fun to try new things, fun to come up with new ideas and approaches, fun to create whether it's a fashion ensemble or a photo or an idea, and it's fun to virtual surf.

When I was specifically asked to start SurfWatch up again, I knew it would require a lot of hours that could be spent doing other things, I knew it would mean dealing with some difficult personalities either on staff or in the surfing community, constantly trying to think of new ideas and stay on top of breaking news to stay fresh.  The growth of the community on Facebook and the popularity of photo groups such as Flickr give people a myriad of other options for sharing their photos and stories, so SurfWatch is constantly looking for ways to push through the din of the crowd and provide something different in the interests of promoting not just one group or one sim or one person but the sport of virtual surfing and the world of virtual beaches to the benefit of the whole community.

SurfWatch is proud to share our mission statement which has been in existence many years but just got a fresh coat of paint and a little bit of tweaking.  We welcome your feedback either in comments or contact Tauri Tigerpaw in world.

Get Ready for Surfari Week!

Submitted by Solsty Kismet

Surfari is coming! Mark your calendars for this year's adventure around the grid, searching out surf spots.

The Surfari tradition has carried from hand to hand over the last decade.  VW Sands is the first documented guide of the event.  Sands traveled from sim to sim throughout the day, exposing eager surfers to new and exciting breaks.

Generations later, an enthusiastic new group grabbed the concept and stretched it out over a week, adding a campsite and nonstop festivities.
Gia Villano-Triton, an SLSA Director, surfing veteran and Pre-Comp Party organizer, has grabbed the torch and will be putting another one on toward the end of July.

Gia Villano-Triton

Pack your bags, SLurfers! This will be an event you won't want to miss!!

BREAKING NEWS: T'ai Surfing Sim Offered for Sale

Sad news for the SL surfing community came out today. Sally LaSalle will be giving up the surfing location, T'ai next month.  To keep it in the surfing community as a Full Sim and adjacent to Chi, which makes it perfect for either a surfing competition venue or as a competition spectator stand location, Sally is offering it to members of the SL surfing community.

Today (July 18, 2018) the SL Surfing Association (SLSA), Sally made an announcement to the surfing community. In part, her announcement said:

"Dear Surfers

It is with some sadness that I must inform you that I need to discontinue my lease of the Tai sim with Linden Labs in its current form.
I will continue to keep the Chi sim (and Bundy and Bluff Cove will continue with their owner Cierra) for now.

I will attempt to sell (transfer) Tai to a new owner.

If no one has taken the sim by August 16th then the sim will be downgraded to a HomeStead Sim on that date.

As an SL Surfing community member, I am offering you the opportunity to take over ownership of the Tai sim rather than selling it outside of the surfing community.

I will transfer the Tai sim to a genuine surf community member for the nominal cost of just one dollar US."

Tai is a full sim available in it's current location adjacent to Chi. Sally went on to say:

"If you take it over you may keep it in its current location next to Chi, or you of course may have it moved if you wish.

There are currently 8 rental parcels on Tai, 50% occupied.  The total potential weekly income of all 8 if full would be 15000 L$, which is 64500 L$ per month, approximately $240 US/month. You may also use Chi as a spectator sim for surfing events."

Since Tai is a full sim, it can serve as not only an SLSA competition venue, but also has the capacity to be a spectator location.

Sally will make her final disposition determination on August 10th. She is also looking after the current residents on Tai and offering them an equivalent sized parcel on Chi. The 10th will allow 6 days to set up parcels and for residents to move to Chi.

If interested, sent an inworld notecard to Sally LaSalle.

FLOW FUNBOARD ABOUT TO BE RELEASED!!

Submitted by Tyler Peace

Recently the creator of flow, Alan Brady, has been releasing some of in my opinion the best surf gear in Second Life (SL). He has released boardshorts, rashguards, wetsuits, hats and so much more. I have been speaking to Alan Brady a lot recently, and he has been getting me hyped up on the new boards he and his friend, Dmilso Olivieri, who is apparently the mastermind behind the scripts, have been working on. From my understanding, there is going to be a total of three new boards:  Funboard, Longboard, and Proboard. All of the board options are loaded with new and realistic Bento animations.

The Proboard will have the ability to achieve aerials, and what's better than air??! I have had the privilege to try out the new one and only Funboard and from my experience it's an amazing addition to the board options in SL. The Funboard I have tried is the demo version and the actual version has even more to do! The ride on a Flowboard has always been an exclusively smooth experience but this new update brings exclusive experience to a whole new level. Not only is it still incredibly smooth but it also brought a bit more of a resistance between the board and the wave. Surfing on glass is a great thing but feeling the force of the wave beneath you is even better, and that's exactly what this board brings.

The best feeling I have yet to achieve on the new board is the cutbacks.  The feeling of push and speed you achieve from doing so never gets old. I can only imagine how amazing that aerial is going to feel. I can't wait to see what's next to come. The Funboard is going to be released on the 20th of July with many amazing texture options.

Surfers Bay Spotlight: Leanne Mordue

Submitted by Persia Bravin
Photos Leanne Mordue

From absolute beginners to seasoned pros, this series of exclusive interviews for SurfWatch aims to discover more about the people that paddle out and face the waves at Surfer’s Bay VIP. Today, we talk to one of the many female surfers that regularly rezz their boards at the sim – the vibrant and talented Leanne Mordue. Leanne is also one of the Lifeguards at Surfer’s Bay VIP and is famed for her dizzying aerials on the waves and her collection of artistic surfboards. SurfWatch sat down with Leanne (with an obligatory post surf cocktail) to find out more about this dynamic surfer and her passion for the sport.

SurfWatch (SW): Hi Leanne! Good to see you at Surfer’s Bay VIP – you are one of the most dedicated surfers here, so how long have you been surfing in Second Life (SL)?
Leanne Mordue (LM): A couple months now I think. I couldn’t for the life of me tell you when I started, but I’m sure it feels so much longer than what it really is.

SW: What do you most enjoy about surfing at the Surfer’s Bay VIP sim?
LM: Surfing for me is a way to forget everything; every worry and bother. My mind goes silent when I surf. It’s my joy and laughter and my stress relief. Why do I surf nearly all the time at Surfer’s Bay VIP? It’s the place where I first learned SL surfing, it has become second nature to surf the double waves there and a home amongst the wonderful people that visit Surfer’s Bay.

SW: You are always such an enthusiastic ambassador for the sport – what do you say to others to encourage them to try it?
LM: Just go for it! Let nothing hold you back! Rezz out your own board or use the C-3 rezzer and hit them waves!

SW: That’s the attitude!
LM: It doesn’t matter how good or bad you are: we all had to learn. As long as you are smiling during and after, that’s all that matters.

SW: You own quite an impressive collection of surf boards - what is your favourite type of board – and why?
LM: Definitely the C-3 or the C&C boards I create: I just can’t get used to any other board. They’re my pride and joy, what can I say haha!
SW: What’s your favourite soundtrack to surf in SL to – what music makes surfing even better?
LM: Ohh…That depends on my mood really. I switch between so many styles, but the most commonly used I’d say are folk and indie tunes and the rock/metal genre.

SW: You are one of the Lifeguards at Surfer’s Bay VIP and a helpful, friendly person – but how would you describe yourself in just five words?
LM: The most difficult question of them all by far! I would say…stubborn, sarcastic, adaptable, imaginative and warm.

SW: Having surfed with you many times – I agree! Finally – when you pack away your surf board, what else do you enjoy doing in SL?
LM: Photography takes the number one spot. No doubt about it.

SW: Your beautiful photographs are regularly featured in the Surfer’s Bay VIP Flickr group and I always love seeing them.
LM: Besides photography, I enjoy doing what I suppose what we all like to do - basically, enjoying SL and its endless worlds and possibilities.

SW: Thanks Leanne for your time off the waves and in interview with us at SurfWatch – is there anything that you would like to add?
LM: Just…no matter what people may say or think, do your own thing. Don’t let anyone stop you or hinder you from being yourself and doing what you want to do. Be kind, be courteous, be open and warm, but hold on to your ideals and traits. Don’t ever lose yourself, your imagination - or your creativity.
You can see more photos by Leanne8976 (Leanne Mordue) on her Flickr stream here.
Surf at Surfer’s Bay VIP: There is a group join fee of 500L which allows rezz rights anywhere on the sim. There is a C-3 rezzer and Maoli waves. Members can also set their home position on the sim plus there are male and female changing rooms in skyboxes.

SLSA Yard Sale

Submitted by Solsty Kismet

It's fundraising time again for the SL Surfing Association. The SLSA runs entirely on donations from the surf community so they're endlessly attempting to generate modest funds to keep going. "Asking for money is a wretched and uncomfortable task, so we're constantly looking for new and exciting ways to raise revenue in a mutually beneficial way." Solsty Kismet explains to the Surfwatch reader. We can expect to see more of these creative endeavors throughout the summer.
For the next week or so, the SLSA has displayed a plethora of products at below market value at the Solace Dreams Yard Sale.

Stop by the beach frequently to see new stuff everyday! ALL funds go directly to the SLSA to help maintain Solace Dreams and all its upkeep!

Dates: July 13th-July 22nd

Surfer’s Bay Spotlight: Fearghus McMahon

Submitted by Persia Bravin
Photos by Leanne Mordue and Fearghus McMahon

With a growing reputation for attracting surfers from across the grid, this new series of interviews for SurfWatch will discover more about the people that paddle out and face the waves at Surfer’s Bay VIP. From absolute beginners to seasoned pros, the sim is a regular hangout for surfers with varying levels of experience. In this first interview, we spoke to Fearghus McMahon - a relative newcomer to the sport - to find out why he enjoys surfing so much.

SurfWatch (SW): Hi Fearghus – how long have you been surfing in Second Life™ for?
Fearghus McMahon (FM): I'm still reasonably new to surfing lol.

SW: You are looking good so far out there - so, what made you want to try it?  Have you ever surfed before?
FM: Well a friend of mine got some surf waves at her region and she actually gave me my first surfboard...that was years ago though. But after a long time of absence, another friend dragged me to Surfer’s Bay VIP as it had just opened up and I kinda just stuck here!

SW: Well it’s a friendly and pretty sim!
FM:  Yes, it is.  I found the people here to be friendly and welcoming, so eventually I dug up my board again.

SW: How does it feel out there on the Maoli waves Fearghus?
FM:  It felt frustrating at first lol.... but then, after a while, you start remembering what keys do what and surfing is actually quite relaxing and being on the water is awesome...I think the sunsets and the water are the prettiest things in SL. Well and the souls of some of the people you meet!

SW: What’s your favourite board to surf on, Fearghus?
FM: The C-3 Spectra and the C&C paintable one simply because I can paint it myself.

SW: What would you say to encourage other people to take up surfing?
FM: It's a fun way to relax and to meet great people.

SW: I couldn’t agree more. What are your plans for your own surfing? Competitions or just the pleasure of being out on the wave?
FM: I surf for fun, I cannot see myself competing against the pro's lol!

SW: And finally: when the sun has gone down, what other things do you enjoy doing at Surfer’s Bay VIP?
FM: Relaxing with friends, which is a growing group of people at Surfer’s Bay VIP since people here actually hangout and talk! Go to the parties and explore the amazing scenery around the sim. There really are some hidden gems and photo opportunities. (Noob alert at my photography though!)

Surf at Surfer’s Bay VIP: There is a group join fee of 500L which allows rezz rights anywhere on the sim. There is a C-3 rezzer and Maoli waves. Members can also set their home position on the sim plus there are male and female changing rooms in skyboxes.
