Welcome Jus Strat - Newest SLSA Director!

Congratulations to Jus Strat as the new incoming Second Life Surfing Association (SLSA) Director position!  He will be serving this term with:  Kris Marley, Solsty Kismet, Gia Villano-Triton and Richie Marley Di Vaio.

Jus:  What an amazing group of people I am blessed to be a part of. Cierra (Theriac-Triton) will be so very missed but she will always be around to help steer me in the right direction.

SurfWatch:  What made you decide to step up and fill a Director role?
Jus:  Solsty, Kris and I are so very close. They are my best friends in any life. The chance to work with them to bring surfing back to the forefront of SL was too good an opportunity to pass up.

SurfWatch:  What do you see as some of the challenges you will face?
Jus:  There seems to be a gap between the veteran surfers and the new kids. I think the biggest challenge is making the new guys realize we stand on the shoulders of giants while letting the old guard see that surfing is in good hands.

SurfWatch:  What do you hope to bring to the SLSA during your term?
Jus:  I intend to continue the work being down by the current board. They have really done such an exceptional job. Being a sim owner I plan to market SLSA much like I do my own sims and continue growing us back to our glory days.

SurfWatch:  What are some of the big issues you hope to impact while in office?
Jus:  I would love our awards ceremonies to be an event. Something people across the grid will come to see and hopefully want to come see what surfing is all about. Our Hall of Fame (HoF) is amazing but could be upgraded to the newer technology we have available now and I would love to see it advance into the land of mesh.

SurfWatch:  Are there any comments you'd like to direct to the SLSA community at this time?
Jus:  I am here and please talk to me. I promise the best ideas won't come from me but the SLSA is fortunate to have so many talented, brilliant members. I hope to make their voices heard.

Refer to SurfWatch Surfer Series:  Jus Strat, Wednesday, April 4, 2018 for more background on Jus Strat

Getting to Know your SurfWatch Staff: Kantbe Thursday

SurfWatch will be introducing you to the 2018 staff members that make SurfWatch so special!  We'll use a different format to hopefully bring you a side of our team that you've never seen before.  First up, SurfWatch Managing Editor, Kantbe Thursday.

Kante started Second Life (SL) back in 2007 and has been a staple of Second Life SL surfing since she started.  Her story:  "Desi (Desirae Beaumont) got me started surfing. I used to manage a club. Part of my job was keeping up with the rental ad boards. Desi and Bobbi (Laval) had a special arrangement with the owner in that they were the only club he would let advertise. Desi had one of the best looking ad boards in the whole place.  And there were tons of ads. They'd advertise, "Come for the babes...Stay for the waves".  I met her one morning when she dropped in to pay for her ads.  I ended up going to look at the small club and live venue she and Bobbi had. I started working for them a little. They got their own sim, Bounty (maybe Bounty Reef) and set up surfing, the club, a small shop that had surfboards, and a live music venue. Desi and Bobbi showed me how to surf there.  I think that was 2009".
Kantbe winning SurfWatch 2nd Annual Surfboard Design contest 2010

Kantbe has a list of awards to her credit that
she will never mention:

Angel Award 2017 Season 2
Hall of Fame Induction 2011 Season 2
Angel Award 2011 Season 2
SurfWatch 2nd Annual Surfboard Design Contest 2010 - 1st Place

When asked to describe Kantbe in one sentence:

Tanya Palianta: Kan is smart, inquisitive, supportive, funny, big hearted and damned sexy.

Cierra Theriac-Triton: Kantbe is one of the craziest, funniest, most kindhearted person I have ever met. I love her to pieces.

Solsty Kismet: Kantbe is a truly dedicated surf ninja. She's the ghost that cleans up your beach litter and makes sure all the beaches are connected. She is the true backbone of our community.

Sally LaSalle:  Kantbe is a weaver of social fabric, carefully connecting strings, knotting knots, bonding bonds and bringing people together.   She will go a mile out of her way to help anyone that asks, but seeks nothing in return.  In a weary world, Kantbe is a warm shining gem, and all who know her are blessed with that warmth.

Gia Villano-Tritan: I was asked by Tauri to come up with a quote to describe Kantbe.  Where to begin I thought. My mind began to escape in all directions when thinking of what to say.  As I sat on the beach thinking, I was immediately envisioning a lighthouse.  Houses that guided lost sailors home with a beacon of light.   Then I began to think of the word Thursday, which comes from the Norse god Thor. Thorsday a day to celebrate the god of thunder.  Who else can brighten the day with a ray of light like a lighthouse and guide our souls home?  It can't be anyone else, but Kantbe Thursday.  She has been the beacon of life, the guiding light, for me, for us, for all in the surfing community.  I was asked to say a few words, but that would be impossible to capture what this amazing person means to us all.

Tyler's Piece - Go West!

Submitted by Tyler Peace (austimus1)
Photos by West (airwestbrook)

Going around to different sims and looking for new places to surf and searching for the perfect board; I came across one of the coolest people I have ever met. West is an amazing surfboard designer and photographer. I was fortunate enough to be able to ask him some questions regarding his talent and how he accomplishes what he does.

Tчlεя Pεαcε: So West, I have noticed you around Hummingbird Point (HB) a lot. Does HB have a special meaning to you? Would you say it's the best place to surf?

Wεѕт: Well, I rent a surf hut there and Shi (Shilow Carter) has done great job setting up the wave layouts, keeping the sim going, and putting on her surf challenge events; so yes,it is one of my favorite surf sims in SL (Second Life).  This is the interview right? LOL

Tчlεя Pεαcε : Haha, yes it is.  When I found you at HB the first thing I noticed was your surf hut.  You had some of the coolest looking board designs I have yet to see in SL. I was very quick to ask you to paint up my surfboards as well. What would you say inspired you to start creating board art?

Wεѕт : well, I didn't feel any surfboard designers really made great looking boards, at least not ones that felt were like real life boards. I love to customize anything I can do in SL, such as my tattoos. First, I found a really good 3D mesh surfboard shell that you could texture and add surf scripts to. Shack (Shapira) helped with adding the scripts to the new board, and I set out making my own surf board designs. I took real life surf board ideas of pro surfers. I wanted them to look authentic to the type of boards you may see at real life surf beaches, and I wanted to personalize it through customization. I try to do that with anything in SL from my surfboards to my snowboards to sailboats and surf gear.

Tчlεя Pεαcε: Right on man! I happen to be a huge fan of your surf gear as well. All of your creations add a nice feel to SL surfing, so from my perspective, I say you are doing really well at accomplishing what you wanted to. Speaking of your surf gear and adding a nice realistic look to surfing, I have noticed your photography as well. Your photos look like something I'd see hanging up at a surf shop. What goes through your head when thinking of what to do with a photo? And where are your favorite locations to do them?

Wεѕт : I started the photos at Hummingbird. I was mainly just curious of what I could do; surfing picture wise. I never really liked any surf pic taken of me by others. I'm not saying that they were bad pictures, just didn't really feel like I was surfing in them. All the pictures felt posed or something. Like most pictures in SL, I wanted to make capture a picture surfing in SL that felt like I was surfing in real life not on scripted board, or posed on a board just for a picture. To take my pictures, I click a snap shot anytime I felt I caught cool angle while I was on the wave. Each set is about 20 - 30 snapshots. Then, I go through a process reducing the pics to 3-6 per surf set. Then, in edit I'll add the wave spit and spray. Each set is at a different surf sim. I kind of surf crawl to all the surf sims in SL. I hope to get to all of them. I not only was trying to make pictures that capture the enjoyment I have on the waves surfing but also make the picture have the same feeling of real life surf posters; as you mentioned. I mostly give attention to these surf sims that are mostly empty. After I do a set of pictures at one of these sims, I hope it brings people to them to surf or to do pics of their own. I really wanted to give people the same experience I have on the waves and encourage them to surf or least try it. I want others to go to these sims and experience the best of SL surfing. One of my favorite locations of my pics is Ash Falls; the ladies that own and run it did an amazing job not only with wave set up but with detail of the sims and waves. Ash Falls is the only places I know of to surf in SL that is not a tropical beach theme, it's a pacific northwest theme.

Tчlεя Pεαcε : Ya know, I have never actually heard of Ash Falls. I will have to go check it out now. What do you think your idea of a perfect surf shot is? Lots of spray? Air? Perfect form? Getting barreled?

Wεѕт : You have to.  I've seen your board floating on the water, Tyler (grins).

Tчlεя Pεαcε: Haha well, I'd hope it floats, man.

Wεѕт : You sure?  You not been there.

Tчlεя Pεαcε : I mean... there was one time I tried to help Kris Marley add a board pad onto his board like you do and the board literally exploded into about 5 pieces and sunk... idk if I'd wanna surf that.  I'm not sure if I have. I would have to go check it.

Wεѕт :  Not one perfect shot.  I just try to capture an exciting moment.  Of course, I love big air shots.

Tчlεя Pεαcε : I can see that in your photography, man. When you look at them it makes you feel those exciting moments in surfing.  It makes you really notice how beautiful it is even in SL.  Thanks for bringing out how amazing surfing can be in SL, dude. Your art really makes a difference.

Wεѕт : Thank you, that what makes me really happy when a person messages me on SL or Flickr saying I love your surf pics,  it looks so fun I have to try it, or I want to try it again.

Tчlεя Pεαcε : I think that's what everyone truly wants; more people to surf. It's a great thing you are doing, dude.

Marina Bay - Talk with Teddy Bear

Submitted by Surfwatch Contributing Correspondent, Teddy Bear (atlasshrugged3)

I first met Jean (jeanquille) while studying at the University.  Together, we sailed the Blake sea dreaming of creating wonderful stuff in Second Life.  Jean, a real life French photographer, introduced me to SL photography, and I exposed Jean to surfing in Second Life.

Marina Bay has grown significantly since its start as a small sailboat and marine accessory store.  Today Marina Bay sells buildings, clubs, homes, shops, clothes, and recently expanded into beach accessories.

Recently, Jean has built Surfing Waves at Marina Bay Shop.

Teddy Bear (TB): What got you interested in Surfing in SL?

Jean:  I enjoy Second Life Surfing.  It’s better than driving cars, better than Skippo or any of the other activities in Second Life.  Surfing and sailing are the most entertaining activities in Second Life.  Part of the dream in Second Life is the paradise landscape of surfing sims.

TB:  What prompted you to create a surfing SIM?

Jean: For a long time, one of my dreams in Second Life was to create a surfing SIM, but my store was too small to pay the tier.  Now that I have become proficient at Mesh 3D modeling using ambient occlusions, my sales have improved enough to realize my dreams.  If my sales continue to grow, maybe I will have two sims with paradise islands.

TB:  Marina Bay is a sailor’s shop, what type of sailing products do you make?

Jean: Since I am a RL photographer, I have extensive knowledge of Photoshop, so I started Marina Bay making texture kits for sailboats.

TB: You expanded Marina Bay to surfing, what kinds of surfing products do you make?

Jean:  hahaha, what does a surfer require?  Listening to Jack Johnson while riding the waves on a surfboard.  I create beach decorations, life guard huts, tiki theme accessories, and many other things required to decorate tropical sims.

TB: Marina Bay offers other types of building creations, can you describe a few?

Jean:  Second Life residents like to have parties, so I've created many types of clubs.  Since I love jazz music, I have created a variety of jazz clubs and jazz lovers from all over the grid come to Marina Bay to purchase and outfit their clubs.  Recently I began creating buildings and harbors for tropical sims.

TB:  You are a top designer for Adam and Eve avatar, what got you into Fashion design?
Jean: Fashion design is very competitive business, some creators like Meli Mako create full perms mesh clothing templates.  Now you don't need to know mesh 3D modeling to create clothes, you only need to texture the templates to have your own fashion line.  I continue to support my friend, Adam and Eve avatar creator Ginger Chevalier.  I have a clothing store at her sim.

TB:  Do you include artistic features in your creations?

Jean: I recently created artistic mesh bonsai trees and very original 3D portraits.  Both items are new in Second Life.

TB:  You are obviously a talented creator in SL, what got you into designing and creating mesh products?

Jean:  I love realizing my dreams creating mesh objects in Second Life.  I model using C4D animation software and all my work is exclusive.  I do not purchase mesh models on DAZ3D and import them.  I modify scripts for my creations and someday I will learn LSL (Linden Scripting Language).  If any surfer has an idea and I am available to help them realize their dreams.  I'm open for all ideas.

TB: What are Marina Bay’s future plans?

Jean:  Continue developing accessories for surfers and sailors.  Marina Bay is an alternative to Tiki Tattoo, Headhunter, and other tiki stores.  Marina Bay is a little different, I'm not just "Hawaii", but any harbor or beach in the world.
Everyone is welcome to visit my market under the palms and surf on my beach.  I do not have a Tip Jar.  The best show of appreciation is to purchase my creations.
TB: You have a C-3 rezzer and Maoli Real Curly waves, let go Surfing!

Jean: I love surfing, nude?  Why not, but take care, there are sharks in ocean.

TB:  I know you sell boardies shorts in your store, so why don't you put on a pair and let’s tests your waves?
Marina Bay, as with every beach sim, is full of romantic locations

Kantbe Serious: Feed Me!!!!

Do you have all of your favorite blogs bookmarked and check each one of them every day to see if something new has been posted? Get tired of all that clicking and waiting for the blog to load only to find it has the same post you read yesterday (or even longer ago than that)?

If you’re lazy like me, there is another way.  There’s this thing called RSS or Really Simple Syndication (the really simple part is what made me want to try it). It’s been around, like, FOR EVER, as a standard to be used by web pages to publish a summary or full text content when a web page changes. A newer version of the same idea is called ATOM (I think it means All That Omlette's Mine or something) that has some added features and has been adopted as an IETF standard.

Guess what!?!

Surfwatch supports both!

There are several ways to subscribe to a feed like this so you can just check your “feed” page or mobile app. I really can’t write an exhaustive article on all of them and how to use them, but I can at least write an exhausting article on two that I use. If you don’t want or need any description of how I’m using RSS/ATOM, you can quit reading here.  Thanks for stopping by.  ;-)

Disclaimer: The following is based solely upon my personal experience. I am not an expert and there likely other ways that may work better for you.

Feedly

Feedly has one of the most widely used RSS/ATOM readers out there. They have free web-based and mobile versions with free and fee-based services.  You’ll need to create a free account so they can maintain the feed sites you’ve selected for your self. To add a site, just click on the Add Content button (at the bottom left of the window in my case). I’ve used the option for Publications & Blogs. I typed in surfwatch.blogspot.com into the Search field, and it found “Surfwatch… Who’s watching the waves”, and at least one other site. Pick the one for us wave watchers. It’ll show you matching sources and will show a little bit of text from the most recent post. Click the Follow button for us. That’s it. From this point on, whenever there’s a new post to the Surfwatch blog, Feedly will show a little number by your feeds to let you know how many unread posts are at the site. Clicking on a feed pops up a window of a post. You can read it there, or choose to go to the blog’s website.

Opera Web Browser

I doubt many of you use the Opera web browser. I started using it because it has a built-in VPN client with free VPN services (not the fastest in the world, but it works easily) and because I use it’s “speed dial” to switch around to web sites I use all the time. It turns out it has a built-in news reader that it calls Personal News. When I open a new browser tab, I have mine set to show me my Opera “speed dial” page, which is a collection of the sites I visit daily. For me, it’s a faster way than using bookmarks. The speed dial page has a small panel on the left which also shows a small icon for Personal News (RRS feeds in my case). It shows a little green badge of any of blogs I’m following has anything new. I can choose to bring up a page with all the feeds I follow, or I can bring up specific ones. They’re then presented in order of the most recent posts first, with summary information about each post. If the summary looks of interest, you can click to go to the blog’s site.
