Custom Surfboard Designs - Interview with Sebastian Dangerfield

Submitted by Kantbe Thursday

In response to some recent inquiries for learning how to customize surfboards in Second Life, Surfwatch decided to look into it a little.  People have been modifying SSi Mod boards for years, and a number of the LSD boards allow for a lot of tweaking relative to the ride.  But the newest way to create a customized design for your surfboard is with the C&C Surfboard and Paint Applier available on Turtle Break in the Pipeline Surf Shop developed as a collaborative project by Cat Hunter (catalinahunter resident) and Cryptic (cryptic resident).

After talking with Cat, SurfWatch has reached out to the most prolific designer using her paint kit, Sebastian Dangerfield (genejeanie), for an interview to pick his brain a bit.

SW: Thank you for taking time to sit down for an interview, Sebastian. Let’s start with something easy.  How long have you been in Second Life?

SD:  Hmm.... not too long a little over a year...year and half I guess

SW:  Can you share with us what brought you to SL?

SD: sure...Basically curiosity...I had seen a documentary about it that cast such a negative light but it made me want to see for myself. I did see that side but also a very positive side to it...it was a very one sided view point.

SW:  How did you happen upon surfing in SL?

SD:  Well, I surf in RL so naturally I went to all the beaches first.... I saw a girl, Lilly Maitland, surfing and asked her to teach me. We are still buddies to this day. It's very rare I'm coaxed away from the beaches when I'm in world now ;)

SW:  It must have been shortly after that when you got interested in making your own designs. How long have you been doing that?

SD: Well, I wanted to from day one.....but didn't have the know how...In RL, my boards are an extension of my personality and I don't buy "of the rack" so to speak......Same philosophy here........

It wasn't until maybe 5 months ago I stumbled onto Cat's kit [ed. Cat Hunter (catalinahunter resident)] and learned that it would do exactly what I wanted it to do...I love my boards I have from Shack Shapira, especially the one Persia Bravin bought me, but wanted to be able to express my quirks more through my boards and was so happy when I figured everything out.

SW:  I know you use the C&C Paint Applier for your designs now, have you designed anything for any other boards?

SD: not at the moment...kicking it around with Lillie....She the techie....I just make wisecracks. We'd like to shape a few more types to be available for sale like a fish, maybe a swallow tail design etc.

SW:  Several people have made designs for pre-mesh boards, like for a Mod version of an SSi.  There's a freely available template that can be used with Photoshop or Gimp.  Is there something similar for the C&C Paint Kit?

SD: It does come with what you need, UV map, layers etc. that can get you a basic, "wrap"...Its really learning Photoshop [ed. or similar graphics editor] and how to position the layers...which ones to keep for final version to upload and which ones to toss.

SW: So it's been a bit of trial and error? Probably a lot of error for me... haha

SD: LOL, Understatement!  It was ALOT of trial and error, throwing darts blind folded....I thought Cat was going to hate me....I'm sure she ran every time she saw me log  *laughs*

SW: hahaha. .. too funny! She sure certainly seems to appreciate your work now.

SW: Do you have any other tips for making a design that you'd like to share without giving away your secret sauce?

SD: Well I was dedicated to figuring it out...and I love watching boards being shaped glassed and painted in RL....So I was going to make it work come hell or high water.  making templates to save is definitely your friend if you plan on making several...especially if you want to "outline" the rails...Doing that from scratch each time is a pain in the arse fer sure.

SW: I've heard you were planning on doing a class as part of Surf Camp, but had to cancel due to computer issues.  What kinds of things would you cover in a class?

SD: I was, definitely.....My laptop kicked the bucket where I had all my templates saved,,,Ugh!   I would have taught the basic process. I do give the option to teach everyone that does have me design a board for them though....Some take me up and some don’t want to deal with it so just continue to use me.

SW:  This paint system allows the no-mod board that’s included to be painted and at the same time, allows people like you to design custom paints that you can securely sell.  Are you doing that with your designs? If so, where can people see them for purchase?

SD: I do sell them...I do prefabs or customs.  I have a Flickr page....Right now is word of mouth so people hear and IM me.....Seems to be spreading pretty fast, I'm a little backed up but not too bad.  Cat and I are are talking about putting in a vendor for prefabs at Tortuga and one one Lille's sim, Coffee Creek.

SW: Do you have any final words of wisdom you'd like to tell the readers?

SD: Don't give up on the kit....You can get there...If I can, a blindfolded chimp can do it..... If you do run into problems, come see me! :)

[Editor's Note:  Sebastian and SurfWatch are planning a demonstration class on the use of the paint kit.  If you're interested, please drop Sօʅʂէყ Kἶʂოεէ (solsty) an IM or notecard by October 2nd, 2017. You can check out Sebastian's Flickr page by clicking the link C-3 Board Paints to the right under Links We Like.]

Old Man of the Sea

submitted by Teddy Bear

Mick

Losing his love, Revy, affected him.

After years together, the “love of his life” went their separate ways. It was buried inside and became this big, deep hole of ache. His grief became a burden, an anchor.  Second Life became a constant reminder of his loving memories together. Out of frustrations, out of desperation, out of disappointments, out of pain and the vicissitudes of his second life, he was concluding that his virtual world was not worth living.

The weird, weird thing about devastating loss is that life goes on.  We’re built to move on.

Mick Training Teddy on C-3
“Are you the Surfing instructor”

The old surfer looked at his new student and grumbled, “Barbie Dolls Can’t Surf”

“I want to learn to be a surfer”

“Surfing is not a beauty pageant, it’s art.  Using your surfboard to paint to the Wave”, he barked.

Training his new prodigy rekindled the emotions of why he fell in love with surfing in the first place.  Fun waves, warm sunshine, good company – isn’t that what surfing is all about?

Suddenly, he got his stoke back…

In his new enlightened state, the pioneer, with a tremendous amount of pride, began to pass on the history to the younger generation of surfers.

On the shore, the “Lombardi of surfing coaches” instructs his student:

“What in the Hell is going on out there?”
“Paint that wave like Rembrandt!  You look more like Picasso during his crazy period”
“Will you quit your spinning!  Right now, I could be at strip club putting lindens in G-strings”

Captain of the most dysfunctional team is SLSA, the surfing legend has weathered his team through nuclear war, terrorist attacks, and two hurricanes.  He is riding the best he has in years; with incredible style.

This month’s SLSA competition, Team Surf Crazy HP Pro at Solace, is a tribute to the “Old Man of the Sea”

New School

Submitted by Mick Lunasea

JT (Castenea) was pissing on about his skinh.  He was not in-world, afk (away from keyboard), he makes me belly laugh.  The main fire in front of the factory to me is the crossroads of Second Life (SL) surfing. As I sat with Rob (Robin Mapp) in '07 at Surf City, I sit today with JT watching SL pass by.  We've seen it all.  Then Barbie found us.

Connie (Countess DeCosta) has had a free surf class every Friday 6:pm-ish for years. Connie and I were decorating the surf school building one day at One Love Beach, and she asks if I want to be an instructor.  I say sure. She decides to makes up online surf instructor signs.  Me, the cranky old surf factory proprietor, says, "Let's charge, maybe go shopping or pay toward tier, heheh".  Connie, in her sexy way, says, ''Nooh, Mick, a fee, noo''. "DO IT", I insisted. I say, "We are surfing escorts.  We charge escort rates L$500 30 minutes."  We never forced it, ok? Connie blew off the fee but, hey, why not?  I'm a pirate.

Seated next to the campfire smoldering of garbage strumming my guitar, I see the incoming cloud. Real Deal tiara. Annette surf movie hair, bling etc.  I'm waiting for Ken. From now on, I'm requiring pre reqs. For instruction, watch Endless Summer twice. Come in a swim or birthday suit. We are surfbums.  Why us?  Why?  You're kidding, right?  Come on, who's alt?  The crazy name choice, atlasshrugged? WTF is that, the paint brand guy? She points to my sign. ''Is that your fee?" With no hesitation, "Yes, ma'am, it is."  I'm thinking she's crazy when 500Linny pop into my thank you box. I'm a shocked and embarrassed surf hobo. Usally people pop in, hop on a surfboad and go. If asked, we tell 'em, ''Arrow keys, like walking.  Hang around, you learn more."

Teddy Bear wants to learn every surfboard used in SLSA competitions (5), every contest location, every nuance, understand any and all procedures related to the SLSA surfing contest, period. Teddy wants to be a pro surf champion.

We chat.  She's smart, funny cute.  I tease, flirt. She's all business. She's a sponge.  Now I'm back in surf school learning, viewing her documentation, SL power point meetings, diagrams, notes, notations, statistics that were overwhelming in a good way. That was just after the 1st lesson, I swear to huey.
With her infectious youth, engergy and good nature she has inspired us.  JT and Connie jumped in sharing their years of SL surf instruction. Almost 30+ yrs of SL surf experience has been dropped on her. She has survived SL family squabbles, drama, pain, sorrow and joy. Teddy has taken it in stride practicing every morning and night fully focused on one goal.

I'm 10 yrs going on 11 as a pro rider.  I think Teddy is the most devoted pro surfer I have ever met. She's not shy surfing using full power mode, peddle to the metal baby, great to watch.  All I know for certain is Teddy, Figger (Arun), Curshaw (MacTagairt) and me as a team were 3rd Season 1, 2017, and 1st now in Season 2, 2017, a first for Surfcrazy.  Thanks, kids.

Team Surfcrazy thanks all bronze and silver sponsors, staff, security, marshals, judges, event coordinators, riders, SLSA directors and members. Best of luck to all in the HP5 Pro. Anything's possible.  Enjoy.

Oh yeah, leave the tiara at home.

The Unsung Hero of the SLSA

Submitted by Mick Lunasea

Most pro surfers have no idea the pain and effort put forth by one person that changed Second Life Surfing Association (SLSA) surfing forever.  Board Sizes and Board Checks prior to Competitions: SLSA forum post Friday September 12, 2008, 2:19 pm "Only Heather (Goodliffe) scripted waves and boards are used in SLSA sactioned events".  All events from 2007 including SLSA events used Heather (Goodliffe) scripted surfboards.  They were widely available, easy to ride. Today they are referred to as SSI, Surf Systems Inc.

July 26, 2008, the first SLSA surf contest using a non SSI Surfboard was the SLSA approved Surf City Classic using the "Ron John noserider" created by Robin Mapp.  It was a one time event won by  rockytheskaterboy Dreadlow from Greece. Pro's jumped back on their trusty SSI surfboards as soon as the awards and bikini contest ended.

On Saturday June 23, 2012, 11:00 a.m hosting the Season 10 Series, 5 Encinitas Pro, Revlon Benoir single handedly changed SLSA surfing overnight. Fighting tooth and nail with the SLSA old guard and new riders alike for months, novel-like posts flew daily in the SLSA forum. Look 'em up.  She got the HP5 surfboard and Teahupoo wave approved by the SLSA Board of Directors for future SLSA surf contests. She had full support from Leogarto Burt and SLSA Champ and ABBSL (Brazilian Surfing Association) rider Wilfed DeCuir. She eventually got support from ABBSL Association Brasil boardriders Second Life Champions Bobbi Laval, Sally LaSalle and the rest of us. Revlon kicked down the SSI door paving the way for LSD, C-3 and whatever comes next.

Leogarto Bert introduced the Teahupoo at one of three Surf Festivals she hosted for free. Revlon rented full sims so more teams, sim owners, vendors of surfboards, and surf wear could participate.
Regretfully, the Surf Festivals have been attributed to me when Revlon was the genius of it all.
Team Surfcrazy is proud to sponsor the upcoming HP5 Pro and thank Revlon for her contributions to surfing in second life.

Love ya Revy,
Mick Lunasea

BREAKING NEWS: SLSA HP5 Comp Saturday Important Info

From Petra Xaris, SLSA Director:

The HP5 comp on Saturday the 23rd of September is being surfed on a ONE wave set up. There will be no jumping between waves. If you fall off the wave, that is it; you fall off and will be counted as falling off. If you try to surf back on the back of the wave, it won't count for added points.

Just wanted to make that clear. So ONE wave, stay on the wave for maximum points. Thank you!

Traveling in Style

Submitted by Dillan Munro

For those of us who don't live at the beach, we have to find ways to get there with an eight to ten foot long board slung over our shoulder somehow. There are alternatives to hitchhiking though, and I for one like to travel in style whenever possible. Thanks to a few high end auto dealers here in SL (Second Life), you can strap your board to an exotic sports car or on top of a big SUV for far less money than you would expect.

You can find most any name brand vehicle you want, but if you're looking for a specific Ferrari or Porsche, you'll have to go by looks since, due to copyright issues, the dealers won't have them listed by their official names. I bought a Lamborghini Aventador but it was sold as an 'Avventura', for example.

Once the legs are shot and the board is put away, you can find plenty of places to drive your car. Those with good surfing skills should conquer the twisty tracks quickly as it's all about hand and eye coordination and trying to stay on the track while driving at full tilt. There are competitions available as well, with timed lap counters where you can race informally against friends or go up against the pros.

As with any purchase in SL, do some research before you buy and look for products with good reviews. Some cars come with very user friendly HUDs, which I find makes them much easier to drive. So for the other gear heads in the crowd, this is your chance to own that Italian sports car you've always dreamed of !

SurfJam 21!

Submitted by Kantbe Thursday

Aloha!

Saturday September 30th, 11AM SLT

If you have never surfed in Surf-Jam (SJ) perhaps a short history lesson will bring ya up to speed ;-) Old timers, humor us............................

The VSA Surf-Jam was created way back when to provide Vibes members their own contests in a relaxed and less "serious" environment, mainly for the benefit of new riders to get a taste of the comp scene before heading out to the Second Life Surfing Association events (SLSA).  As such, SJ tends to have a more playful "feel", and I hope you all contribute to that while surfing here :-)

This Surf-Jam is for anyone interested in or curious about surfing in SL and NOT an approved nor sanctioned SLSA event. This contest has no bearing on your current SLSA points standing. We do, however, try to adhere to SLSA rules and principles of "Fair Play".

Our friends at Teahupo’o will be the host venue for Surf-Jam 21!  Waves are still a surprise at this point and boards are your choice of ALL SSi, Action, HP, LSD, and C-3 boards.   Please, NO MOD BOARDS! Please.

Pre-lims and semis will be 3 waves each and the top 2 waves will be totaled and averaged. Finals are 4 waves each. Scoring per SLSA rules, 0.5 - 10.00 at .5 increments.

The top two (2) riders from each of the 4 pre-lims will advance to the semis and the top 2 riders from the semis to the final heat.   Exact scoring ties send all 3 riders through.

Since Teahupo'o is an Openspace region, the spectator stand will be next door on Hana Aloha.  The location of the stands is a best guess at the time of this writing.  You might want to Fly before you teleport there.

REGISTRATION
-------------------------------------------------
This contest, as all Surf-Jam´s, is restricted to 24 riders total. After the roster is full we will be keeping a Stand-By rider list so it´s never to late to sign-up!

Send a notecard with your FULL SL NAME (for the access list) followed by "want´s to rip it up at Surf-Jam!" to VW Sands.

Example:
I, VW Sands, want to rip it up at SJ!!!

 Get signed up for Surf-Jam!!

One Love Beach

Submitted by Dillan Munro
Hurricanes are nasty events; they do widespread damage, but thankfully we are resourceful enough to put things right again with blood, sweat, tears, and good old fashioned hard work. Such is the case at One Love Beach, where a fierce storm rolled in and destroyed a great surfing venue. Thanks to the work of the owner, JT Castenea, the beach has been repaired and is better than ever.
With his careful manipulation and rebuilding of the sand, he has managed to create some amazing waves. The ride from formation of the surf to the beach is one of the longest you will find in this life, and those with the skill to stay in the curl that long are rewarded with an experience that stokes the fire in every surfer's belly. For others who enjoy the fluffies, there is a place to ride those as well in a back bay.
There is a surf shop where you can purchase a custom board made by Mick Lunasea. This beach will also be the home of team SurfCrazy.

Several areas apart from the surfing are worth mentioning here. There is a nice little private lagoon for close friends; leave the bathing suits on the beach when you go back there. Climb up a ladder behind the beach and you'll find a nice bar that offers beer on tap and doubles as a great place to watch the surfing.

Walking along the beach there is an abandoned old VW bus that gives a bit of privacy for some intimacy.

And if you keep going past the bus high atop a cliff there is an eagle's nest where you can enjoy a view of the entire sim and find some surprises while you're relaxing with someone special.

All in all, every serious surfer ought to check out One Love Beach. When the thighs start to wobble, there are plenty of other things to do here to stay entertained.

This is the first in a series of short, but sweet articles that describes a few basic characteristics of  SL (Second Life) surfing sims that you might want to check out.  These articles are not going to replace the more in depth articles SurfWatch will continue doing on surfing beaches in SL, but will supplement those and the simple list of sims in the Surf Watch Wave Report in the sidebar to the right.

Journey to Mesh

Submitted by Dillan Munro

I was away from Second Life (SL) for quite a while, several years in fact. When I returned, I soon discovered that this whole new thing called 'Mesh' had infected the world. I had a pretty good understanding of SL and how it worked when I left, but now I felt like a newbie once more as I started exploring mesh bodies, heads, and clothes. It was a journey I'm glad I began though, as the whole concept takes our avatars to a new state of realism. I don't know about you, but the Linden version of our bodies leaves a lot to be desired to my way of thinking, especially in the areas of hands, feet, facial details, and 'other' parts. Mesh addresses all these shortcomings, but it is not without growing pains as well. I learned a lot, but I am still a neophyte as the whole implementation is quite complicated.

As with most things you buy in SL, acquiring the demo first is always a good idea. This is a must when it comes to mesh, because the way things are shown in the store or in MarketPlace are often quite different than what you will find once you buy them. The demos are quite complete; most give you the ability to tweak many of the settings that are customizable to give you a unique look and will show you what you can expect. Mesh bodies, quality ones anyway, are at least $1000L, while mesh heads are $5000L, so you don't want to make a mistake there and do an impulse buy.

Another drawback is that once you have gone mesh, virtually none of your old clothes are compatible, so it means a new wardrobe. At the risk of sounding sexist, this is a problem for us guys, but a bigger issue for women as they typically have much more invested in such things. Shopping around is definitely warranted, as deals can be found, and many Midnight Mania sites offer mesh items that are quite good. There are blogs and websites available that can help with details on how to make the best of your own mesh journey...Google them !

As far as my own journey goes, I ended up buying the Adam mesh body and a Catwa mesh head, both of which I couldn't be happier with. A few others have told me I look 'ok', which I take as a compliment since they are brats anyway :)

Isla de Amores

There is a little jewel of a place that goes by the name of Isla de Amores. It's a tropical setting that evokes images of some south Pacific remote island, complete with white sandy beaches, palm trees, small atolls, and many little hidden spots for lovers. The attire is swimsuit or nude, and most who visit seem to opt for no suits. There is a very nice bay, with a better than average wave set that is easy on the beginning surfer, and both boards and windsurfers are available for anyone to use.

The many teleporters will help you make your way around, and lift you up into the clouds to the Spa and the Red Room, to name just a couple of the more interesting spots. You can probably guess why it's called the Red Room, but suffice it to say that those who take advantage of the toys there may have difficulty sitting for a few days!

I always like to walk around new places like this and observe the details, of which there are many. Look for the jungle treehouse and the hidden cave behind the waterfall. There are also old native ruins; watch out for the trap door !

One of the owners is almost always on hand to greet you at the landing spot to answer questions and help make your experience as fun as possible. There is a $100L one time fee to join the group, but it's one of the best expenditures I've made in SL. It's usually quiet there with very low lag, as well. For those of us with old slower computers that's always a plus.

Check it out for yourselves; I don't think you will be disappointed !
