Up Close and Personal: Revlon "Revy" Benoir

SurfWatch Second Life Surfing Association (SLSA) special correspondent, Cierra Theriac, recently met with newly elected SLSA Director, Revlon "Revy" Benoir, to share more about her background and interests with the virtual surfing community.

SurfWatch (SW): Tell us how you got involved in Second Life (SL) surfing?
Revlon Benoir (RB):In RL (real life) I am a solitary surfer, while I do have friends that I occasionally surf with, you will typically find me on the beach at sunrise pulling a dawn patrol.

When I first arrived in SL I began looking around for surfing. I did join the SLSA but much like RL I was a solitary surfer and opted to develop my open space (homesteads used to be called open spaces in 2007.) My open space was called Pacific Coast Hwy.  I was a huge fan of Robin Mapp's RJ products. On PCH Hwy I installed RJ and SSI Pipes waves. I added another open space and purchased Leogarto's (Burt) first Teahupoo Wave. I was one of his first customers. It came in sections and you had to layout each section with a ruler. Oh I miss those days.

SW:  What promopted your decision to run for SLSA Director this term? What qualifications, skills, competencies, traits, etc. do you bring as a director?
RB:  I have watched as some dear and long time friends recently left the SLSA. When I asked why; I got a myriad of answers, some I agreed with others I did not.  When asked one person replied "It is just not fun anymore."This one answer in particular that inspired me to run.

Of all the skills, competencies, traits, etc. I bring with me to the SLSA, I think there are 2 that I would like to share.
#1 I really do care about people in the SLSA. I share their passion and concerns.
#2 I really do believe in the people of the SLSA. I know that together we can make the SLSA even better than it already is!

SW: You did not compete in any SLSA competitions last season and the eligibility requirement was waived by the current Board (completely in accordance with the SLSA by-laws). Have you participated in any surfing competitions and do you feel this does or does not impact your ability to be a director?
RB:  Yes I surfed in the Solace Dreams Open and Solace Dreams Pro this season. The by law on eligibility you reference is:
2.1.1.2. An SLSA Member must have competed (and been assigned a score) in at least one of the previous six SLSA sanctioned competitions prior to the election.

As you can see the spirit of this by-law is not defined. My own interpretation is that surfing a competition is actually an effective barometer to establish active participation in the SLSA.  I have always been active in the SLSA in my own way. Building and running SIMs or producing Surf Festivals or just being a friend when you needed one.

SW:  What areas of improvement do you currently see for the SLSA as an organization?
RB:  Both the Board and the Membership could work a little better on communications.  This is my first term as a director. Prior to my appointment, I was a little baffled by some of the decisions handed out by the Board of Directors. For example ;Why do we only use SSI surfboards? I saw a very recent thread on this matter on the SLSA forum.

When I came on the Board I found the Board is actively working with this issue. They had very legitimate concerns about bringing in new boards for competition.  In this example the membership has a concern, yet is unaware that the board is already addressing this concern.  As humans our ability to communicate really sets us apart from mollusks.

SW:  What do you see as the top issues facing SL surfing in general, and what do you see as your first priority as an SLSA director?
RB:  I think the biggest issue facing the SLSA is community involvement. As of this writing there are 955 members in the group, yet only 2 members ran for director. In the last election we had 25 people vote!Improving member participation is my #1 priority. I have already approached the board with this as a concern as well as pitched a few ideas.

SW:  The SLSA modified the stipulation that a rider could miss one comp each season and not have it count against their rank in order to allow more people to volunteer to judge comps. Now if a surfer judges a competition they are "given rank points for that event equal to their averaged surfing place for the season." Do you feel this will address the issue of getting more surfers to volunteer to judge and how do your feel about everyone still being able to drop their lowest score for the season?
RB:  I would like to put aside the, "Do you feel this will address the issue of getting more surfers to volunteer to judge" question. Instead I would like to focus on the clever and out of the box thinking that went into the solution to making sure that the sacrifice of volunteering is acknowledged.  Everyone can have a bad day so I do support the ability to drop your lowest score for the season. The SLSA Rules work pretty well to make sure no one is harmed by this action.

SW: There has been discussion and polling of surfers about allowing other board types and wave types other than SSi.  The SLSA is planning one competition this season with LSD boards. What are your thoughts on allowing other scripts into the competition season?
RB:  I alluded to this issue earlier. First we do use other waves and have been for a while so lets focus on boards. I am a proponent of using other boards, however, before we open Pandora's box we need to understand a few possible issues.

Here a just 2 that come to mind, there are actually several more that are being considered
#1 Judging.
Sure in an RL comp you can ride Channel Island or a Webber. The call to "make SL comps like RL comps" sounds so ubber glam. But this is not RL and we must be pragmatic   It is not possible to Judge an HP5 with the same criteria that you judge an SSI. Something as simple as crouching is handled completely different. At minimum we will have to train judges on each board allowed.
#2 Availability.
I don't own an LSD board. If I wanted to compete in an LSD comp I would have to get one. Not a biggie, unless you just don't happen to have the Lindens.  Maybe we could use Rezzers to get around the availability problem. Do we require that everyone use the same board that is loaded in the rezzer?

As you can see, it is not as simple as declaring a board type and we have not even started to talk about using say and LSD, HP, Action, and SSI in the same comp. I am not saying we can not do this, I am just saying lets make sure we understand what we are doing first.

SW: That's it for the tough questions. (Laughs).  What board is your current favorite and why?
RB:  My fav board in RL is a 7'6 fun board by Kennedy. It is blue with a pod of dolphins on the inlay. In Second Life, my fav board is the Surf Crazy Revy Femme Fatale by Mick Lunasea.

SW: What wave is your current favorite and why?
RB:  In RL my fav wave is the LA/VC (Los Angeles/Ventura County) County Line. I love the break and right across PCH is Neptune's Net. Yummm FIsh Tacos and Cornona!  In SL my fav wave is the Joaquina. I love the way it looks, it comes in either RH or LH and is easy to setup. Not real tricky to ride, just kind of a fun afternoon.

SW: What are some of your favorite SL surfing spots and why?
RB:  Ok Shameless Plug.. Enchanted Break, I find the Teahupoo2 to be very challenging to ride. I have added the HP Wipe out objects so if you are riding an HP5 (Rezzer on the beach) you can wipe out.  I like Tai CHi for the atmosphere very relaxing.  Love Monkey Cove because there is almost someone there to surf and party with.  I like Braata because they have the Mav pretty well dialed in.

SW:  Anything else you would like readers to know about you?
RB:  Hey I thought you said the hard questions are over!   Ok Revlon or Revy is my RL nick name. When I was a younger I loved the song Black Widow by Lita Ford:

Spider web stocking
At the pearly gates
Ruby lips, Revlon Kiss
Born to seal your fate.

SW: I want to thank for taking the time to talk to us and letting us get to know you a little better.

Giant Manta Rays!

Submitted by Marianna Monentes

We have Giant Mantas at the point now!!!

Kayaker Magic just IM and said he finished his amazing Giant Manta Rays!! They are here at Breakers Point for you to come and take a ride! This manta will swim in the water on your property, but never repeat the same path! A chaotic algorithm makes it behave in complex ways without being random. It is a physical object and moves very smoothly. It will briefly jump out of the water, but it will not swim into the ground or outside of the sim boundaries. It will stay inside the water of your parcel, or nearby water if enabled. You can ride the manta and direct it where to go with the motion controls. However, the manta has a mind of its own and will not violate the boundaries it has been set to stay in. By default only the owner can change the options, but it has an unlock mode that allows your friends to control it using the dialog menu. Anyone is always allowed to ride the manta!!

Metaverse United Surfers Tour Update

Submitted by Lissa Sands (Pinion)

Lissa Pinion of SurfWatch recently caught up with Clarke Torok, founder of the Metaverse United Surfers Tour (MUST) to get an update on the status of the organization that had its first write up in SurfWatch back in 2009 (http://surfwatch.blogspot.com/2009/06/metaverse-united-surfers-tour.html.).  This will be a continuing series as SurfWatch follows up with Second Life (SL) surfing groups to get an update on activities, comps, participants, etc.

SurfWatch (SW):  Tell me how your group started and is it still active?
Clarke Torok (CT):  MUST WAS STARTED BY SURFERS FOR SURFERS WHO WANTED BOARD CHOICE OF THEIR OWN THE WAY IT SHOULD BE, NOT OF THE COMPETITION ORGANIZATION. WAVE DIVERSIFICATION NOT JUST ONE OR 2 WAVE CREATORS WAVES BUT NOT EXCLUDING ANYONE WHO SUBMITTED A WAVE THAT ALL BOARDS WOULD WORK ON AND WOULD NOT CREATE A MONOPOLY WITHIN THE WAVE INDUSTRY, ALSO TO BE MORE REALISTIC AS NOT ONE BEACH IN THE WORLD HAS THE SAME TYPES OF WAVES AS ANOTHER. FAIR COMPETITION GUIDELINES AND JUDGES WHO ARE REAL SURFERS NOT PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER EVEN SEEN THE WATER LET ALONE A SURF BOARD. IT IS STILL ACTIVE AND WE HAVE NOT HAD A COMPETITION IN A WHILE DUE TO MY SCHEDULE AND LACK OF HELP TO KEEP THINGS RUNNING.

SW:  Is your group open or by invite only?
CT:  OPEN, WE HAVE JUST NOT HAD A MEMBERSHIP DRIVE OR A HQ TO HAVE A GROUP ADDER SINCE I HAVE NOT BEEN IN SL OFTEN ENOUGH TO KEEP UP WITH IT, YOU CAN STILL JOIN FROM THE GROUP PROFILE.

SW:  MUST started with a handful of comps but has since faded from the public surf scene. What are your plans?
CT:  OUR PLANS ARE TO RE-ORGANIZE WITH A POSSIBLE COMEBACK AND RUN THE TOUR ONCE AGAIN AT FULL CAPACITY TO MIRROR THE SAME CAPACITY AS THE SL TRIPLE CROWN OF SURFING COMPETITION THAT WAS RECORDED AS THE LARGEST COMPETITION HELD IN SL TO DATE AND HAD THE STRONGEST, MOST DIVERSE FIELD OF ANY COMPETITION. ALSO SETTING THE RECORD FOR THE LARGEST CROWDS TO WATCH SURFING IN SL. THAT 3 EVENT SERIES WAS HELD OVER 3 CONSECUTIVE WEEKENDS AND SURFERS ACCUMULATED POINTS FOR EACH WEEKENDS EVENT AT 3 DIFFERENT SURF SIMS ON 3 DIFFERENT WAVES THAT WERE AVAILABLE AT THAT TIME ON ALL BOARDS AVAILABLE

SW:  The surf series you hosted, worked, and ultimately won had a few riders. Do you feel that ethically it was correct to surf the same event that is hosted by and worked in by a member of the group?
CT:  I'M NOT SURE IF YOU ARE SPEAKING OF THE SL TRIPLE CROWN OF SURFING OR MUST, BUT THE ONE I HOSTED, WORKED AS THE ORGANIZER, MARKETED, SPONSOR GATHERER AND WON WAS THE SL TRIPLE CROWN OF SURFING. SEEING AS ETHICAL TO SURF IN IT OF COURSE IT WAS ETHICAL, I WAS JUDGED JUST LIKE THE OTHER SURFERS WERE BY THE SAME JUDGES THEY WERE i HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH SCORING. THE JUDGES PUT THEIR NOTE CARD INTO THE SCOREBOARD AND THE SCOREBOARD READ THE RESULTS. MOST ALL OF THE WORK I DID ON THE EVENT WAS PRIOR TO IT, NOT DURING IT OTHER THAN ONE ISSUE WHICH WAS BLOWN OUT OF PROPORTION BY MANY BUT WAS EVENTUALLY A MISUNDERSTANDING WHICH I APOLOGIZED FOR MY PART IN AND STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED AN APOLOGY FOR THE WAY I WAS SPOKEN TOO THREATED AND TREATED AFTERWARDS NOR HAVE ANY OF THE OTHER 2 MARSHALS WHO THAT PERSON THREATENED AND MISTREATED EITHER. HONESTLY I HAD WASHED IT UNDER THE BRIDGE AFTER ALL THIS TIME, MY REPUTATION HAS BEEN HURT BY THE INCIDENT DUE TO MOST PEOPLE ONLY HEARING AND SEEING ONE SIDE OF IT AND NOT WANTING TO LISTEN TO ALL SIDES, BUT I FIND THAT TO BE NARROW MINDED IN VIEWING IT MYSELF I WOULD RATHER MOVE ON. LIFE IS MUCH MORE THAN ONE WAVE POUNDING YOU INTO THE REEF, THE KEY IS TO GET UP PICK UP YOUR STICK AND GET BACK IN THE WATER. I MAY HAVE WON THE EVENT BUT SO WHAT I DONATED MY PRIZE MONEY AND OTHER PRIZES TO THE OTHER CONTESTANTS IN THE FIELD ANYWAY.

HERE'S REAL FOR YOU, KELLY SLATER HAS A SURF COMPETITION HE ORGANIZES, HOSTS, MARKETS, AND SURFS IN AND HAS EVEN WON. TIGER WOODS IN GOLF DOES THE SAME THING.

WHAT IS UNETHICAL IS AN ORGANIZATIONS BOARD OF DIRECTORS WHO MAKE THE RULES DECISIONS, PUNISHMENT HEARINGS, ASSESS PENALTIES, PICK AND TRAIN THE JUDGES TO SURF IN THE COMPETITIONS WHILE THEY HOLD THAT POSITION OR AFTER, PRIOR TO HOLDING THAT POSITION THEY SHOULD SURF, BUT NEVER DURING OR ESPECIALLY NOT AFTER, SAME GOES FOR JUDGES SURF BEFORE BUT THE MOMENT YOU TAKE ON THAT ROLE YOU CAN NOT EVER SURF COMPETITION IN THAT ORGANIZATION AGAIN. THOSE AREAS I DIDN'T HAVE A PART IN THE PEOPLE WHO DID ALL OF THAT DID NOT SURF.

ONE CHOSE NOT TOO AS IT IS UNETHICAL AS HE SAW IT AND HE HELPED ME BY SETTING UP THE GUIDELINES AND RULES FOR MUST. HE WORKED FOR THE LAW FIRM WHO ASSISTED THE ASP IN RL SURFING SETUP THEIR GUIDELINES, AND IS A RL SURFER AS WELL.

PART OF THE MUST TOUR WAS TO BRING TOGETHER THE TOP SURFERS FROM EACH OF THE OTHER SURF ORGS. OF SL WITH THE TOP SURFERS OF MUST AND PUT THEM IN A COMPETITION AGAINST EACH OTHER IN WIPE-OUT MODE. FOR THE NEXT SL TRIPLE CROWN OF SURFING WHERE THE BEST OF THE BEST BATTLE IT OUT ON 3 DIFFERENT SIMS WITH 3 DIFFERENT WAVES ON ANY BOARD THAT ALLOWS YOU TO WIPE-OUT IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE OR GET INTO THE ROCKS IN THE BONE YARD. BUT THE OTHER ORGS. NEVER COULD GET TOGETHER ON THAT MOST NEVER EVEN GAVE US THE TIME OF DAY WHEN WE ASKED FOR A MEETING, BUT IT'S ALRIGHT IT MAY HAPPEN EVENTUALLY OR I MAY JUST GO SURF IN THEIR ORGS. COMPETITIONS AND TURN MUST INTO A INVITATION ONLY MINI SERIES THAT THE SUCCESS OF THE SL TRIPLE CROWN ONCE ENJOYED ONLY IT STARTED AS AN OPEN EVENT WITH THE LARGEST PURSE EVER. IT MAY FIND IT'S WAY BACK TO THE STAGE ONCE A YEAR FOR AN ANNUAL THING IN THE OFF-SEASON AFTER CHAMPIONS ARE CROWNED SO WE KNOW WHO TO INVITE!

Surf Champion Wilfrid Decuir - Here and Now

SurfWatch recently caught up with Second Life (SL) championship surfer, Wilfrid Decuir, at his beautiful home at Ocean Shores to find out what he's been up to in recent months.  Wil has been involved in SL surfing early on, becoming 2008 Season 2 champ; 2009 Season 1 runner up; as well as 2011 Season 2 champ.  He was 2009 Season 2 team TaiChi Captain with the team placing 2nd; 2010 Season 1 team TaiChi Captain with the team taking 1st place; 2011 Season 2 team Tsunami Captain with the team taking 1st., and is recognized in in the SL surfing Hall of Fame (HoF).

SurfWatch (SW): Are you still surfing in SL?
Wilfrid Decuir (WD): I am still surfing in SL, most of the time that I come in world, it’s to surf.

SW: Do you still have a surfing sim? Is it open to the public? If so, what kinds of waves and other stuff do you have there?
WD: I still have Ocean Shores and it’s always open to the public. Currently have a sweet 4 panel Old School EPIC running. It reminds me of the fun I had when I was a new surfer at Majini from many years ago. Other waves you may find here are Joaquina, Teahupoo, Sunset, original and new pipes, Fluffies and a variety of LSD such as the Wilf Waimea and Malibu to name a few. There are temp board rezzers for SSi, HP5 and LSD. The beach also has a party deck with loaded couple’s intan and solo dances. Lots of places to chillax and recently added a “Wilfrid HOF hut” lol.

SW: What are some of your fave surf spots these days?
WD: I really like what the SLSA did with their new sim at Solace Dreams and you may find me there once in a while. I also enjoy the various beaches at Monkey. However, everyone will very easily find me surfing at home these days.

SW: What board are you riding these days and why?
WD: I’m currently surfing on a hybrid SSi, it’s an old school short long board. I really enjoy the feel of the epic old school boards. I also enjoy surfing on HP5, love the realism it provides to RL (real life). You may also find me on an LSD board once in a while when I really want to get my freak on when it comes to tricks.

SW: Do you still compete in SL surfing comps? What do you think about your SL surfing competition experience?
WD: Well as most of you know, I won the last season, participating in 4 of the 5 comps of 2011 Season 2. This was a goal I had set for myself as a sign that I was back to my old self because of various personal issues I had to deal with. (God I hate drama and users... chuckle.) I’m currently taking a bit of a sabbatical with comps and SL focusing more on RL, but always enjoy coming in for a good surf.

SW: Any thoughts on the evolution of virtual world surfing?
WD: Once Mesh takes off more, I’m hoping to see more waves and boards made with Mesh, just like what happened when sculpties were introduced.

SW: What else are you doing for fun in SL?
WD: I did a bit of RP’ing as a Na’vi, (the creatures from the movie Avatar) and really enjoyed that. I’m ranked as Ikran Makto hunter/warrior. I also enjoy riding my motorcycle, following the various roads on the mainland, and I also have a private riding area way way way up in the sky at home. Once in a while I enjoy catching a live show, blues, rock, and you of course Tauri!!! (smiles)

SW: Anything else you'd like peeps to know about you and what you're up to these days?
WD: For those that don’t know me, I’m a drama free no worries kind of guy. Always willing to help out with new surfers and comps. Aside from my focus on RL, I still come on for a good surf and always willing to have party waves. My advice to everyone, surf for fun even in comps, don't take SL too seriously, and to quote Flynn (Flynn Sheridan), my mentor, "feel the wave, ride it, don't drive it".

Motor Boat, Motor Boat...

Submitted by Marianna Monentes

Virtual Highway has tested boat scripts and they are working fine. What makes owning SIMS so awesome here at Virtual Highway is, when you purchase a full SIM for $75 USD you can then purchase a water SIM for $10 USD for your boating pleasure. The full SIMs are 40k prims while the water SIMs offer 1k prims which is perfect to berth most large pleasure craft.

R.W. Tests the boat scripts

We have just recently added a beautiful new marina to the grid called Paradise Cove where everyone is offered the chance to boat. We are just now building boats and setting everything up, and we welcome you to come join us.
