Ashleigh's Advice #5: It's been a while, but I have a timely one...

It's almost fall again, and this busy bee can't wait to slow down and enjoy some cooler temps. Fall brings Fall TV, and each year my OCD side comes out and I list out all the shows and decide what I want to watch and then organize them by premiere date. My go-to source for all this info throughout the entire year is FutonCritic.com

Each season (Fall, Spring and Summer) they put up their complete broadcast schedule grid. Making it super easy to see what's airing when. They also list by network what shows are back for the next season, cancelled, new or coming back in a future season. This is how I know that One Tree Hill is coming back for it's final season, even though it's not on the CW's fall schedule. And how I found out about this weird sounding half hour comedy (Apartment 23) co-starring James Van Der Beek as himself (and judging on the plot, he's no Dawson!) It's also how I know I can breathe a sigh of relief for Mike & Molly and Hawaii 5-0; all while looking forward to Grimm and a Charlie's Angels reboot!

So if you're a TV Junkie like me, or if you just don't wanna miss out on something you'll love until it's too late. Take a few minutes and check out their fall grid. Got a favorite show not on one of the big 5? They cover those too, search by name, network or even actor!

Riders For a Cure Wraps Up Relay for Life Weekend

This year was a record breaking year of fundraising for the Riders for a Cure team with the total of $252,908L or $944.72USD raised and these totals will continue to rise until the 2011 Relay for Life of SL season ends on August 20th!The Riders for a Cure team has begun wrapping up the 2011
RFL season with the final event coming on August 6th with the famous annual Surf For a Cure event. Keep dropping $L into the team kiosks you see all over the beaches of SL and stay tuned for more info on the Surf for a Cure event or even better, if you have a sim and want to host a couple of hours of great fun, contact me at lissapinion@gmail.com or by notecard inworld

Special thanks to Sierra Sugar and Cole Eyre who designed and built the Riders for a Cure campsite, VW Sands who built the Riders for a Cure water park, and Sebastian Saramago who once again, donated the official RFL surfboard. Thanks to the members of Riders for a Cure for coming out to the events and working and to the surf community for showing once again that we will not give up on the fight to cure all cancer. Below are some pictures from the RFL of SL event that took place this past weekend. The Theme was Seasons of Hope and our campsite was on one of the Spring sims. As you walk a path that wandered through flowers, you come to a pool with a wave, a board, and around the wave were special boards of dedication to those battling, those who have beat and those we have lost to cancer.

Until there is a cure we RELAY!

Surf Festival III California Dreaming is almost here!

Posted with permission of Surf Festival Organizers
Hey Surfriders!
It is great pleasure that I am announcing the arrival of Surf Festival III California Dreaming July 23 - July 31st. The festival has always been tagged with the lines; A Celebration of SL Surfing and the SL Surfing Community and For Surfers by Surfers. Before I dive in the details of the events I would like to take a moment to acknowledge that never before have those 2 tag lines carried more meaning. The planning stages for the festival got a late start this year and was in grave danger of not being produced at all. At this time two members from the community paddled in and caught the wave for you guys. I would like to hand out a special thanks to Syx Toshi and Sunshin Zhangsun, so when they paddle into the line-up behind you, go on and give them your wave.

Ok so now on to the juicy stuff! This year the Fest is the biggest to date, covering both the Mahina Kai and Kapu Kai sims and usual the event is free (well almost the most you can pay is $L1 and usually a vendor limitation) This year Mickey and I wanted to pay tribute to the ever increasing convergence of RL Surfing and SL Surfing. They waves are better , the boards are better, but you guys, the SL Surfriders just could not get any better! We love to just hang out trading surfing stories and descriptions of our favorite breaks. Then it occurred to us, why not share one of our favorite Cali breaks with you guys. So we got busy and set about transforming both Mahina Kai and Kapu Kai into the World Famous C-Street (California Street) break in Mickey's home town of Ventura California!
Ventura or more accurately Buena Ventura means the Good Adventure and could not have been a better location to host the Surf Festival. There is the iconic California Street Holliday Inn (I admit I am terribly lame at directions and often resort to driving by landmarks, and this trusty building has led me to the break for years!) Aptly renamed on the sim as the Hollowday Inn this structure is home to a museum of SL Surfing History hosted by Syx Toshi.

The C-Street break in RL is amazing! The break is right hand and breaks off of Ventura Point at 'stables' the mouth of the Ventura River. On big days It rolls down the point ending up at the pier (which incidentally is the longest wooden pier in California.) The break easily averages 6 to 8 feet during the peak season and is host several competitions throughout the year. Not to disappoint this year the Surf Festival is hosting its first ever full competition The Surfcrazy Open.

As luck would have it overlooking the point is the Ventura County Fairgrounds and due to popular demand the Surf Festival Carnival has returned this year. Once again the festival is offering free exhibit booths each with a generous 30 prim allotment located in the Fair Ground Stables. Just to the south of the stables is the Exhibition Hall. Here you will find special exhibits by the sponsors of Surf Festival. All told this year we have the capacity for nearly 60 Exhibits!

On the south side of the 101 Ventura Freeway as you leave town is the Santa Barbara Muni Airport at Goleta. The airport features a Jet Helicopter Rezzer for arial tours and is the site for many of the larger events including this year's grand finale concert. This year the Surf Festival Staff is proud to present a Jimmy Buffet Tribute on July 31st at 3 PM SLT. This is something all Parrot Heads will not want to miss.
By all indications this is shaping up to be the best Festival we have ever had! At this time I would like to thank all those you have volunteered to help and those who have so generously sponsored the event. In closing I would like to remind everyone that this event is for entire SL Surf Community and the M class audience of Second Life. The one aspect of RL Surfing we will not condone is Localism type behavior. This is the one time a year that we can all get together and share the stoke. So when ya see that rival wave thrasher, maybe try buying them a breakfast burrito instead of throwing yours at them.

RFL in SL: Riders For a Cure Invite

Riders for a Cure, a team working with the Relay for Life in SL, invites you to join us this weekend as we wrap up a wonderful 2011 Relay season. Opening ceremonies will begin at 10am sl with the Survivor/Caregiver lap beginning at 11am sl time as we honor those who have survived the fight with cancer or who have taken care of those battling cancer. I get questions every year about why Relay for Life is 24 hrs so I've attached the following found at: http://www.relayforlife.org/relay/trackback/294

Relay For Life starts at dusk and ends at the next day’s morning.

The light of the day and darkness of the night parallel the physical effects, emotions, and mental state of a cancer patient while undergoing treatment.
As the participants arrive to start Relay they are strong and ready for the challenge.
That newly diagnosed cancer survivor hopes they too are ready for the challenge – the challenge of their life.

We start to lose theday’s light and the cancer survivor wonders if they are going to lose theirlife.
As the evening goeson it gets colder and darker and the participants start to wonder what they have gotten themselves into
- just as the emotions of the cancer survivor gets colder and darker and they too wonder what is in store for them.

At 9 p.m. at Relay,we have the emotional rollercoaster of the Luminary Ceremony where every candle we light represents the life of a loved one.
Some have survived and some have lost their battle.
But these lights will guide you through the night.
This represents the time the cancer patient gets help from family, a doctor, or maybe the American Cancer Society – where we will help light their path through their journey.

Around 1:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. you’re tired and have been walking for hours and you don’t know if you can keep going. You think about giving up.
For the cancer patient, this represents the time when they start treatments.
They become exhausted, some sick, not wanting to go on, possibly wanting to give up, but they can’t.

Around 4:00 a.m. to5:00 a.m. we are nearing the end of Relay and for the cancer patient, it symbolizes nearing the end of their treatments.
You’re tired and so are they but you’re almost there.
Hope is in sight.

As the morning sunrises – you know that what you have accomplished is wonderful and empowering and so does the cancer patient.
They can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
The morning sunrise brings a new day full of life and they know they will live to see another day.
Their treatments are over and they made it!

When you leave Relay, think of the cancer survivor leaving their last treatment.
Just as you are exhausted and weak, so is that person after treatment.
But there is hope in the new day!

The money raised at Relay will support community services, lifesaving research, prevention education, and advocacy efforts…and that is why we Relay!
So the next time you are asked why we Relay at night – say because we can.
REMEMBER: There is no finish line until we find a cure.

Join us and together lets surf out cancer! Until there is a cure we RELAY!

Kantbe Serious: Ice and the Cubettes

submitted by Kantbe Thursday

The nearly famous (well, nearly infamous) Ice and the Cubettes were in a boogie down mood and funked out the house at Izzy's Redux last Friday night.

See if you can identify the surfers in these photos taken by the sim's police department just before they were all hauled off to jail for disturbing the peace.

[Hints: DJ Shotgun Wound (aka, Icecube Panthar) and club owner Tanya Palianta are not the surfers; two also have a green fetish with the beachwear they make; Jack Sparrow isn't after all of the Black Opals]
