Kantbe Serious: Feeding your head

submitted by Kantbe Thursday

How the heck do Ya'll keep up with what new stuff is going on with the SLSA forum, SurfWatch articles, and the always stable status of Second Life itself? I'm just too lazy to keep log'n in to all those different places just to see if something new had been posted.

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds might be a help. All of the sites I mentioned above and more support publishing sort of a head line of new posts. If you hang out in Windows Explorer 7 or Macintosh Safari a lot, you don't even have to use a special RSS reader to keep up with new posts. You can bookmark the feeds and the headlines are automagically pushed to you.

Here are a couple of links to show how to set up feeds within Explorer 7 and Safari 4:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/rss/default.mspx
http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_do_i_subscribe_to_rss_feeds_with_safari.html

Some feeds I like to use are:

SL Status: feed://status.secondlifegrid.net/feed/
SLSA Forum: feed://surfslsa.com/forums/feed.php
SurfWatch: feed://surfwatch.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default
SurfWatch Comments: feed://surfwatch.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default

I even have one for my email, but I think I'll keep that one to myself ;-)

Enjoy, Ya'll!!!!

Competition Practice Sims

submitted by Kantbe Thursday

The last Second Life Surfing Association (SLSA) competition of this seaon will be made up of fluffy and Teachupoo waves. In an effort to help surfers find possible practicing locations in the event Archipelago is busy (or you just want to get in a little practice in private), SurfWatch has put together a list of public surfing sims that have these two wave types.

To use these location SURL's, copy and paste the web URL into your chat window and "Say" it. Then open your local chat window and you'll have a link you can click on for a TP to the location.  Sims and wave configurations sometimes change pretty frequently.  SurfWatch staff have tried to verify these surf sim locations and wave set ups, but can't guarantee that this list of wave types is exhaustive nor that these waves will be in place after this posting.  Feel free to notify us of any updates!

Here's the list as of the time of this posting. Have fun everyone, and good luck!!!

Mari's Mailbag: Friends Lists

submitted by Marianna Monentes

I have been learning that out of all the gazillion personalities on Second Life (SL), we are very blessed to have the ones we do on our friends list. I notice from time to time I am deleted or added to lists, and for every deletion, I paused at the time but since have grown from knowing that person. I always learn something from every person I meet. Sometimes it's not so easy to recall, but when I do, I always smile as to the one who taught me. If you are in SL for a number of years like I have been, it's only natural to meet new people and have lots in common and become friends. Later though, you find yourself drifting apart because both interests have changed. In SL there are so many projects going on and to not be involved would be ludicrous. So naturally with growth from doing new projects, you tend to drift apart. Friendships can be stronger for it but one may oftentimes find themselves defriended. I find, too, that communication is so key to maintaining a strong bond. Lots of times a communication breakdown between text and your brain, not reading how chat is implied, taking things out of context. Just feel comforted in the fact that you are on someone's friend list and be that friend whenever possible.

SL's Newest Family

Mick Lunasea and Revlon Benoir are proud to announce a new addition to their Second Life (SL) family with the adoption of their new little grommet, Kalif Christenson, aged 10.  Revy says, "He has my hair and Mick's surfing style."  Mick comments, "Hes a good grom, minds his manners and is a little ripper."  Kalif adds, "Is speechless and honored to be the son of Revy and Mick now (smiles)."  Kalif comes just in time to lend a hand with Mick and Revy's Surf Fest taking place at the end of this month.

Kantbe Serious

submitted by Kantbe Thursday

Hey, Ya'll. Kantbe Thursday here. I'm a new staffer for SurfWatch. Some of you have probably heard of Thursday, but maybe not me specifically. I'm best known for the valuable role I've played helping the top ranked surfers in the Second Life Surfing Association (SLSA) community. Yep, that's me. Those at the high end of the bell curve need surfers like me to prop up that bottom end. It's hard work, but someone has to do it.

I'll mostly be covering the unusual and bizarre around the surf scene. I don't have the skills to give surfing tips and Mari's got the human interest angle covered, so… why not?  Besides, I'm not really a journalist, so if I can't find something on which to report, I'll just make stuff up. A couple of possible future articles might include:

Exclusive interviews with VW Sands and Quench Spotter on the feeling that men are disadvantaged in nude surfing competitions. Join me for the expose', Does Size Really Matter (or Hey, Man! I just do that to keep my AV rendering cost down).

With the recent announcements of a whole new generation of realistic cat and dog animated pets, I may dig into the research relative to the potential impact on our beaches to find out what lies just below the surface in a series, The 6th Scent.

I would like to ask that ya'll help me out. If you hear about something unusual and/or bizarre (or just interesting), drop me an IM or notecard so I can investigate. Then again, I'm not an investigator either, so I might just make something up about that too. Let's just keep it clean and fun, well…. fun at any rate. We've got enough to be serious about in our lives, let's try to lighten things up a bit.

Watch for my erratically occurring column, Kantbe Serious

Take care, Ya'll!!!!!!
