SLSA HOF Building Design Competition

posted by the SLSA Sunday, Nov 8, 2009

The SL Surfing Association (SLSA) is pleased to announces an SL wide (open to non SLSA members) competition for the redesign of its Hall of Fame (HOF) building. This will be a fund raising design competition.

A 1000L entry fee will be asked to submit your design. Entrants will have 3 weeks to submit their design, which should be a in world full scale model. The winner will be selected by popular vote from the SLSA members after the designs are presented for viewing anonymously. The winner will get an accreditation panel on the building itself, and free gold level SLSA sponsorship placement at all SLSA events for 6 months (7.5KL value + lead business).

Submissions must be received by November 30th with the Winner Announced on December 5th prior to Round 1 of the Montego Surf Comp.

Design brief:

Create a building for the display of SLSA Hall of Fame inductees and for the history of the SLSA. The building should capture the "stoke" of the surfing community, but with a touch of reverence. The building should fit in harmoniously on the SLSA Archipelago Sim (a tropical sandy bay). The building should be 300 prims or less, and fit within a 30 by 30m ground space (it doesn't have to be square tho). The building could include scripts but must not register any significant lag. The existing building to be replaced can be found here:-http://slurl.com/secondlife/Archipelago/194/90/21

Mari's Mailbag - Etiquette

How many of you have read Surf Etiquette? Hopefully we all have and do our part to respect the surfers out there. I know that I would be out on a wave and get completely plowed over by surfers not understanding I was practicing and deep in concentration about executing my trick. Some out there think every wave is a party wave, called or not. Its great to party, but when a surfer is practicing, it's really not the time to plow them over. Here is the surfing etiquette rules for those of you who may have missed them. I found this handy list at Mori Pwani...not sure who the author is but credit is due.

~ The Line Up ~
As with all things in life, we will need to line up to catch a wave. If there is no line up then, the wave is all yours. However, if there are people waiting for a wave, please go to the back of the line. Jumping the queue is never a nice thing to do and will cause hurt feelings, bad vibes and frustrate others. As always, we get perfect waves in SL, so use your mini-map to check that someone else is not waiting for a wave on the other side of it before you hop on to it.

~ Paddling in ~
When you paddle out, use the channels on either side of the wave… meaning, don’t paddle out directly into the wave, ’cause most likely another surfer is going to be surfing towards you on the wave and you’ll bump into him/her. So, pick a side, any side, and paddle out to the wave avoiding the other surfers.

~ Catching Waves ~
When catching a wave, the surfer closest to the wave has the right of way. When in doubt ask the person if they are going to catch the wave. If you are the closest surfer to the wave and decide not to catch the wave, tell others ahead of time so they can enjoy the wave.

~ The Drop-In ~
The drop-in is the worst thing one surfer can do to another. If someone is already in a wave or paddle for a wave, don’t try to catch the same wave (the drop-in). This is not cool. Two people on the same wave is not fun when you are not playing bumper surfing.

~ Party Waves ~
If you are surfing with friends, then whatever, have a party. Party waves are for all to enjoy. 2+ people on a wave can be a very fun time for everyone, especially when you are playing bumper surfing. Just tell everyone the wave you are catching is a party wave or you may accidentially drop-in on another surfer.

Enjoy the waves and respect other’s enjoyment…. and have fun!

Teahupoo by Leogarto Burt

A few surfers were invited to test out the new Leogarto Burt wave, Teahupoo, at Rincon (81, 233, 21).  The wave has a unique fold that allows you to surf in the curl, opening to a short side and an interesting ride inside the green room and on top of the crest.  The wave is now available to purchase for 30,000L and showing at Crab Island (235, 241, 31) for a test ride.  Contact Leo for more information.
